Wow. I just looked at airfares for May, and I'm reconsidering everything. I would greatly appreciate any input/opinions on this. I know that things are unknown right now, and that it could still be closed, things could still be crazy, but PIF day is still a month away, and I figure we will know one way or the other how things will be looking for parks by then. We do have around 60k URs and DH has a CIP, but we are trying to earn enough points for a cruise in 2022 (that DH want's to book by September, so hoarding is key right now.) I'm also a flying newbie...I've flown for 2 trips ever in my life so dealing with airlines is definitely not my forte.
Our current plan is a Friday-Monday WDW trip over Memorial Day weekend (so end of May) with the resort/tickets paid for using already purchased DGCs.
-We are currently booked through Frontier roundtrip (this is fully refundable through the end of this month) for $461rt with one checked bag. If I cancel and rebook, keeping everything the same, it's $341. This is the nearest airport that offers non-stop flights to MCO. The airport we would be flying out of is 2.5 hours away, and parking costs would be roughly around $80. We would be taking our 9mo old, and gate-checking a stroller.
Southwest flies out of this airport also, but all of the flights I'm seeing have 2 VERY short stops (30-40min in very large terminals), and is around $450.
-In a slightly surprising turn of events our local airport has reasonable fares! That would remove the parking fees and 5 total hours of driving. If we flew out on Thursday (my preference) and back on Monday, we can fly Delta for $428 with short layovers in Detroit (not a huge airport and won't give me anxiety like a layover in say, Atlanta.) Family could pick us up/drop us off, the total flight time is just over 30-60min longer with the connecting flights. This doesn't include a checked bag. American has more stops, and costs around $550. The more I think about it, the more I like this idea because not only would it give us a longer vacation (the return flight is MUCH later in the day, and our arriving flight through frontier doesn't land until after 9pm on Friday, plus the only difference would be the cost of tacking on a night in one of the All-Stars.
-My hesitation is with changing all of the flight plans, having Covid-19 wreck it all, and then being out the money for the flights. (Though I see that Delta is waiving change fees for flights booked before 3/31 so if we had to rescheduled could we just change the flights to October or November at no cost other than flight differences??) Either way I think I'll be cancelling our current flights (because they can be rebooked the same through "better" carriers or for less through frontier). Are the cancellation processes different if you book through the UR portal?
