@Haley R I had zero braxton hicks with my first baby. That is pretty normal. It is only in later pregnancies, as the body knows what is coming, that the uterus likes to 'practice'. By my last baby, I was having BH contrax by the beginning of the 2nd trimester lol! And they literally mean NOTHING!! You can contract and contract for months. It's kind of crazy.
With my first, dh & I went out to dinner and I instinctively ate a very light dinner. I'd been living it up prior and we'd been eating out every night. I'd only gained like 21 lbs so I was thoroughly enjoying the last couple of weeks! But that night, I just ordered a salad with grilled chicken. We went for a walk as I was 2 days overdue and hoping to help things along. We went home, watched a movie and then we got ready for bed. Dh fell asleep right away, as usual, and I laid down. I'd only been laying down for a few mins when I felt a pain that felt different than anything else I had felt before. I looked at the clock and it was exactly 12:00am. This was funny because I was due May 12 and Mother's Day that year was May 14. Over the course of the pregnancy, I'd had so many people tell me that they thought it'd be so neat if I had the baby on May 14, and I was always like, "Nooooo! That means I went past my edd". I continued laying there and within a few mins, I felt that pain again. I looked at the clock and it had been 7 mins. I decided I should start timing the contrax. They were continuing but not regular yet. By 2am, they were 5 mins apart and very regular and getting more intense. Our OB had said to call when they were 5 mins apart and regular. So, I called and I can't tell you how bad I felt calling her in the middle of the night but it was time. She talked to me and listened as I tried to talk through a contrax and told us to go in. We got to the hospital at 3am and I was at 7cm. It was clearly 'baby time'! And yep, she was born on Mother's Day, just as so many had predicted lol! All that to say, you will know when it is time! It's very rare that a woman doesn't recognize the signs of labor because it's very unique and I think we just kind of instinctively know.
