It’s why I have a love/hate relationship at my job. I hate my employer, actually mostly love my job. Pay is crap, benefits are nil, but I really have the respect of most in the ICU (though not in my department) and feel I can make a difference there. Those sound like some pretty valuable benefits that don’t have much monetary value. It’s pretty amazing to have co- workers who respect you and are your friends. I have to say, for years I have told my labor and delivery patients that I had THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD!!! I have amazing co-workers and a wonderful schedule. The day their baby is born is one of the best days in their lives and I get to share it with them. Then tomorrow I get to share it with someone else.
I might have been wrong. After going on the Dolphin Excursion trip I’m thinking they might actually have the best job in the world. Not changing occupations any time soon though.
My previous career was in veterinary medicine, which was also fulfilling but back breaking at times. I loved animal care but it’s hard work. My internship at a local zoo showed me the political side of a zookeeper job. Dolphin trainer might be more fun.
