Well technically I own the house, but the tenant gets to live there until her death, or until we both agree to sell. I did consult an attorney when this all happened 10 years ago and was told basically I own the house, have to pay for upkeep, taxes, etc., she lives there. The money was left to me with the intention to help pay for house upkeep but there was no legal stipulation I must spend only on that. I just felt it was my moral obligation to spend it as it was intended. The house was left to me by an uncle who didn’t trust his own kids to be honest and do the right thing, so he couldn’t leave it to them. However, I keep records of what I spend to be honest, but also because one of my cousins has occasionally threatened to sue to break the trust & get the house and I want to be able to show I’m not making a profit here. (My cousin has no legal standing and just wants the house for $ and would kick out the tenant) Honestly the tenant knows I can’t afford to let her live there for free or I would. It’s a regular soap opera.
Since you have Shady Cousin sniffing around, I probably wouldn't do it. I'm fairly certain that courts just don't go around breaking trusts for no reason whenever someone asks, but he could likely manage to get this classified as misuse of funds in some way. Were it not for Shady Cousin, I personally would see nothing wrong with it.

You quoted my earlier comment today where I shared what happened ;) :P LOL! Maybe you missed that part :)

I see this as two different things though. Everyone hitting a small CU hard enough to crash their site isn't the same thing as multiple AA or CIP cards. Granted the CU is going to figure it out on their own because of the crash and hopefully they have good rules and can deny people but it's not even close and I don't blame the person for telling them. Plus good luck getting a big card issuer to listen to you regarding a loop hole. It's about keeping that stuff off the blogs.

I honestly never see this issue coming up again but I think the mods stance on this is that they will not tolerate anybody taking information they learned on r/churning and reporting it to a bank for purposes of “morally policing” the community. This also may have happened before, this person was just stupid enough to brag about it (not sure what they thought they were achieving there)...

An interesting r/churning exchange regarding credit unions.

First some backstory - recently there's been an effort on r/churning by one particular user (and others assisting) to find every bank and credit card bonus out there that they could (many from obscure localized banks and credit unions).

Yesterday somebody shared this comment on r/churning about a $500 sign up bonus for $4,500 spend from a Baton Rouge credit union. Within an hour the website had crashed due to all the applications that were submitted: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/bb6kgs/discussion_thread_april_09_2019/ekicwzo/

Well in response, a user stated that they felt it was unethical for us to abuse a local credit union and actually reached out via email to somebody there to report what was going on: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/bb6kgs/discussion_thread_april_09_2019/ekjwde6/

Additional discussion ensued in today's Discussion thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/bbkov4/discussion_thread_april_10_2019/ekjzwiz/

I thought this was interesting and worth sharing. Much of the discussion surrounds a few ideas:
  • Each person in this game has to draw their own moral boundaries (i.e. do you only "abuse" big banks, would you hit up credit unions, will you have a "business", etc...)
  • Is it ok for one person to decide to police others with their morals by reporting something like this directly to bank management?
  • Should we treat smaller banks or Credit Unions differently than larger banks? Are they better (or any less "guilty" if that's your premise)?
  • Should it be the responsibility of the business to police their own terms and conditions and who they are approving?
If anybody has any thoughts on this exchange and how they approach these "issues" in the game, I for one would be fascinated to hear them. I think it's an interesting discussion topic for our group here :)

Funny you mention this. Just yesterday had my first bank bonus fail. Clearly I had $100 written down as needed for DD, so what did I do? $50. 60 days have passed, no bonus for me. This is only my third bank bonus and this was with Community Christian CU and I did have thoughts that maybe I shouldn't be doing it, but I did plan to possibly keep the account if I liked the website. Well I guess I got my answer...maybe I shouldn't have done it! I do think that it is up to businesses to police their own terms. If they only want people in a specific area I would think it would be easy to just deny people outright. If you are going to offer a big bonus and not police who can get approved, you're just asking for trouble.

I agree with having to go in to close an account..if I had to do that I don't think I could do it either. I am in the process of taking money out of DH PNC account so two withdrawals the past two days. So today he gets a call from them, "Not an emergency, I just want to talk to you about your account." I better be careful, he's my reluctant P2, can't have banks calling him!

Did you have to do anything special to get the 20% off to ring up at Staples? I went to my Staples yesterday, and they said the cards didn't scan as on sale. There was no signage in my store, either. I wanted to get Panera cards, but didn't since I thought the offer had expired (the offer was mislabled as expired on DoC yesterday).

Nope, as soon as he scanned them they automatically dropped from $25 to $20 each. I didn't try anything but the Petco cards since that's all I wanted.

I'm going to test this and make sure it still works before I get stuck with $1300 in Kroger gift cards. I just don't buy many groceries there.

Definitely. I shop at Kroger so I have no problem loading up on their GCs, but I would hate for anyone to get themselves in a bind with them.

That sounds as if the person has what is called a 'life estate' in the house. Sounds like you've been doing a great job!

Good luck with the soap opera! And do keep those records!

I don't have any suggestions, @CyndiLouWho, but I did want to say you're the first person I've seen have a life estate outside of a property law exam or bar exam question!

On the ethics, I have no problem with it. I am actually planning on doing something similar. For reasons I won't get in to we are "holding" a family members money. I hate it. I don't want it. My plan is to hit some bank bonuses with it and keep the bonus. I just haven't actually got around to doing it yet, but I feel like at least I can get something out of it. But in my case, nobody is watching me. No one cares. I keep records of what this person has, but other than that, they have no idea what I am doing with it So in your case, does someone care? Is someone watching over the money and seeing where and how it is spent?
Nope. No one watching. Just my conscience

Yacht Club and Beach Club are just amazing to me. That area is so beautiful, you can walk to Epcot or HS, you can boat as well. I honestly don't have a preference between the 2 - both are nice and they share the same restaurants and awesome pool.

What’s the point difference? lol I like Coronado but it doesn’t really compare to the beach club. I’m staying at the Yatch Club for the first time in June. I like the renovated rooms. But between the Yatch and beach I’d def do the cheaper one.

I do not know anything about Coronado so can't help there. But, YC/BC share the best pool on property. It's like its own little private water park.

BC is closer to Epcot but on a cash (or points... non-DVC) stay, YC is the better choice if a balcony is important to you. Too many BC cash rooms have tiny, useless Juliet balconies.

Thanks everyone. I was leaning more towards YC/BC anyways but this sealed the deal. It's literally just a few hundred point difference. Prob up to the wife if she wants to be a little closer to Epcot or have a balcony.

 I didn’t totally know what I was getting myself into. Tenant was my late uncle’s girlfriend. He was 80, I assumed she was closer to his age than mine. Turns out I was wrong.

Yet...

FIL strapped the garbage cans so they couldn't knock them over anymore, but that meant they figured out his lid solution... he had a heavy board on a hinge (they have a half wall to hide the cans so it was attached to that) that laid on top of the lids when it was down. They figured that out so he started putting a cinderblock on top, until they figured out to knock it off. Then he started bungee cording the cinderblock on the lid... they chewed a hole in the bottom of the trash can, and pulled everything out through there. That was even worse because it shredded all the bags and trash as they tried to pull stuff out and made an even worse mess than normal.

That’s... terrifying. Are you certain none of those raccoons were part of the same experiment that gave us Guardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket?

I'm sorry :( It's definitely an unusual situation that he must have found an, uh, unusual lawyer to help him with. I have no experience in property law but I'm certain there would have been better ways to effectuate his wishes.

Yeah I’m pretty sure cousin is too stupid to pull off anything legal. Plus it’s been over 10 years already.
ETA The actual money was not connected to the house/trust. I was beneficiary of my uncles annuity. I’m not sure my cousins even knew about it. (They would probably be more interested in cash if they knew)

Animal behavior - we were completely grossed out by our nasty Yorkie earlier this week. The incident involved getting a not so live squirrel out of my kitchen and away from said nasty Yorkie. As if the evening incident wasn't enough, I had to deal with the remains again the next morning. Dogs will be dogs, but now I don't even want to let him run free in my fenced back yard.

We don't have any raccoons running around close by but they were near my job when I worked. And, just like @amalone1013 we once had to put a piece of wood in the dumpster to get a baby raccoon to crawl out.

I'm home from my work conference where I accomplished about $500 worth of the best kind of MSR- the kind I don't ultimately have to pay for since work reimburses! $350 hotel bill plus food all got to go to DH's Bonvoy Biz. I also added the $40/$200 Marriott offer to this card, so that'll be $40 back in my pocket that I'm already being reimbursed for. Unfortunately, DH's work trip all had to go on the company card. A double bummer since he stayed 3 nights at a Grand Hyatt and we're still working on MSR on the Hyatt card. We're now just over $2000 into the Bonvoy Biz though.

DH's AF on his ancient Delta Gold card posted on Monday. I'll have to get him to call to downgrade that to the no fee card. I wouldn't keep it, but it's his first Amex and it's 7 years old.

Now I just need to decide on offers and timing of more Citi AA Biz cards...
