So very true. They do get vocabulary also :) He is just not a writer. I am still constantly reminding him about using capitals and periods :)
Haha some kids just get certain subjects and others are harder. I see so many kids that excel in one subject and really struggle in another

Hm, AmEx is fickle. I checked out the comments on the AmEx post and there's a report just the other week with the same issue. I wonder if it's random CSR's putting things through or it's really a change (or I totally missed the conversation here and have bad info stuck in my head :) )

Same thing here when I downgraded. I received a prorated refund of the $95 fee.

Never heard of silicone rings before - that one's new to me.

As DD's first grade teacher told us, reading at a higher grade level does not mean a child is mentally or emotionally mature enough to read books aimed at that higher age group. I totally agreed and found a local kids bookstore where they helped me find books that weren't too easy but were still on par with her maturity level and weren't inappropriate. Not surprisingly, many of those books were older ones (as in written before the 1960s). Regardless of a student's ability to read and understand the words written, teachers should not be pushing content that kids aren't ready for.

hmm, i saw an article that says ppl who applied for the new card will get it in march. people who have the Lux will get it in June.

Interesting. DH says that his LUX card stopped working in ApplePay this week, and he suspected it had something to do with the change to Bonvoy (of course he doesn't have a new card). Anyone hear anything similar?

it shouldnt... all my SPG cards did turn into the new design already in amex account and apple pay.
if it really doesnt work, just have him readd it back into apple pay.

Alright, I'll tell him to try that. He's been working too much this week and not getting any sleep, so I'm guessing he hasn't tried to troubleshoot this one yet.

Well that's rude. Give you a grace period to cancel but not if you stay and can still potentially generate revenue for them. Very fickle, and unexpected interpretation. I thought there were previous reports of the full refund but maybe I'm misremembering. The writers at DoC haven't updated anything yet though so maybe it's newish? Still not cool AmEx.

Thanks for the insights! I guess I could ask our neighbor to pick it up, but it's no fun worrying about it on vacation. Or I could apply on the very last day while we're on the cruise (should be back by the time it gets here). We have internet included. But my DH will think I've gone off the deep end. :rotfl:

Or I could use that slot for the personal Plat instead (keeping him under 5/24). Seems I can pull up the 75k referral offer now that I have a personal Plat (couldn't before). So 75k + 15k referral is pretty close to 100k, which he may never get. Ah, decisions, decisions.

Just some thoughts.

With the Brilliant, you'd be getting 100k Marriott points. The Plat, 75k to 90k MR, which are transferrable to other partners than just Marriott. Do you need those Marriott points for something, and would you transfer the Plat MRs to Marriott? Or are you just looking for opportunistic bonuses?

The Plat's 75k MR offer via incognito referral is YMMV. You might not be able to pull it up and may only get the regular 60k MR offer. In which case, it's better to just try to pull the 75k incognito offer without trying for a referral because you may have to pay taxes on the referral bonus. (Unless, you really want those 15k MR in your account since Amex makes it hard to combine stashes.) I'd like to say the Plat offer(s) will be around while the enhanced Bonvoy bonuses will end 4/24, but who knows if or when Amex will kill self-referral/universal referrals?

If getting the personal Plat for DH, would that be too duplicative of your Plat benefits to justify another $550 AF?

If another Plat would be duplicative, have DH go for the Bonvoy Brilliant -- however, Marriott/SPG offers seem to go up and down, and I don't doubt the Brilliant will go back up to 100k Marriott points eventually.

What about Amex biz cards to build MR?

I PC'd DH's Blue Cash preferred to an everyday shortly after the statement closed and did not get the entire $95 fee back, they kept a month's worth. His Gold card fee is much higher, so I don't want that to happen again.

Same here, only got a prorated refund of the $95 fee ($87.08 for 11 mo refund) when I downgraded the BCP to the BCE (done a day after the AF posted). But, when I closed DH's BGR within 30 days of AF posting, he got the full $175 AF refunded. Don't know if that's a result of it being a credit card vs charge card, or personal card vs business card, or something else.

Do you recall if it took a while to get the annual fee refunded? I had my preferred card for years, but decided to change to an everyday when the annual fee posted in January. They have not refunded the annual fee yet.

I think those are horrible choices. I personally would not read them. In 3rd grade the advanced reading class read Romeo and Juliet, which I think is a bit much personally, especially since we have seen suicide in our district. DS reads above grade level but since he has no interest in reading, he was not picked for LEAP. It’s only 10% of the kids which is 6 or 7 kids. Unfortunately we have no advanced math program, which is something he not only excels at but loves. I’m sure we’ll eventually have issues with assigned books. I’ve heard many parents complaining of books which were racially insensitive as well as situationally inappropriate.
This one shocked me. Romeo & Juliet can certainly be read & understood by an advanced 8-10yo reader but is absolutely thematically inappropriate.

The most "questionable" reading assignment for us was Stephen King's IT (7th grade). I had already read it (IT?) on my own so I was thankful that I could just skip over the parts I did not like, all of which I remember vividly to this day despite only reading them once  I think there were some complaints but the book is still in the curriculum.

But, the one I had the worst time with was The Grapes of Wrath. I ended up sobbing in the counselor's office after class because I wanted to hug my grandma, and I was 15 years old. You never know what's going to get to you, at any age.

I would’ve refused to read It as a kid or teen. I’m terrified of scary clowns and will not see that movie. This is mainly because I saw parts of the original movie at a young age at a friend’s house. I’m pretty sure teachers aren’t allowed to force books or movies on kids. We had to sign forms if the movie was pg-13 or higher. If I had a student that didn’t feel comfortable I would have them choose an alternate book and research a theme that they find important in the book.

I can’t remember a book/movie that bothered me from school but in junior high I watched the boy in the striped pajamas late one night and cried so bad. I was the kid that watched all of the saw movies with friends and wasn’t phased, but couldn’t go through haunted houses. I guess everyone is scared at different things. That’s why there’s a million different phobias

Amex has gotten feisty with me before on expedite requests. I called after getting approved for the Hilton Biz a couple months ago, and the rep said if I had a big purchase coming up so soon, maybe I should have applied for the card sooner.

Well, fine.
Wow.. just wow.. that’s just as bad as the rep pretending like they gave me “free” points for my retention offer. Had to forcefully remind them that I had to spend two grand and pay the $725 annual fee for me and my AU. My 10,000 point bonus finally posted today lol

I value your opinion. Can you guys give me feedback on what you would do?
I need to get 4 of us to Italy next April.. I have 120,000 AA miles which would get us to Rome from PHl(most convenient) one way.. the one way fares to Europe are insane..
Coming back I’m looking at $2k pp to fly Rome to Phl..scary..

Or we could fly out of jfk to Milan on Emirates for $2,000 total.. jfk is two hours away from home and Milan is a 3 hour train ride from Rome.

What would you do? Burn the miles and pay the one way fee or do the round trip to/from airports that aren’t convenient paying the same for one way with cash?

The other option is to fly into Rome using miles and fly back using cash from Milan. That wouldn’t be that bad since our final leg is Venice. That would be 2k total for all 4 one way on emirates into jfk.

All flights quoted are direct because of my nervous flyer DH.
Advice?

$95 AF posted 11/3, refund posted 12/3. So you should see yours 30-31 days after the AF posted based on what I saw on mine?

For one of my cards, don't remember which one, my first charge was a couple thousand over the phone to an out of state dentist 1000 miles from me. My MIL was getting work done and we have access to some of her money so that was easiest way to do it. After I hung up with dentist, I was like crap, that could go very bad, they are going to deny it for fraud. It went through fine. I wasn't sure if I was happy or not about that. lol I was like, how do they know it was actually me?
My very first charge on my CSR was $2500 to fund a bank account :rotfl:Never even occurred to me until way later how Chase might view that. Never had a problem!
