Thanks. I guess after the weather over the past month, we decided not to wait for a "catastrophic event" lol...carbon monoxide scares me as does having no heat! Supposed to continue to be unseasonably cold. Being that it was 15 yo and we hope to escape IL in <5 years, we decided to pull the trigger. Didn't go top of the line but still $6K.
That being said, DH jumped on the GrAAvy train this morning. Found the $200 gift card via incognito. We won't do a ton of AA but those miles might be nice for flights to the Caribbean.
DH questioned why I felt we needed another card...first time he's questioned it. Dude...chill!
Yeah it would be pretty tough to have no furnace in Chicago right about now. It’s a tough surprise expense.

Each card issuer has rules for it. AmEx will refund the full AF if you cancel within 30 days of the statement closing date that has the fee posted. Outside of that, no refunds on cancellations but you get a prorated one if you PC to another card. Chase will fully refund the AF if canceled within 30 days of the AF posting date. Outside of that I think you get nothing, but if you PC a card within 40 days you should get a full refund of the fee, outside of that it will be prorated.

As for the referrals on Chase, the CSP referral link should continue to work after you change the card. And since the card number and everything else about the account stays the same, you'll still receive the referral points. You can only call to PC cards now, so worried or not, that's you're only option. But I'm not worried, I will be doing it in a couple months myself. People had both cards from before the rule was enacted so unless the CSR digs into all your accounts to see the opening/anniversary date on each one, it probably won't even phase them. I haven't heard anything bad about it yet.

ETA: DoC has a page that list out the basics - https://www.doctorofcredit.com/annual-fee-refund-rules-for-each-card-issuer/
The comments have newer information as people update.

I appreciate the information. I PC'd DH's Blue Cash preferred to an everyday shortly after the statement closed and did not get the entire $95 fee back, they kept a month's worth. His Gold card fee is much higher, so I don't want that to happen again. I don't think they could claw back the Home Depot GC I used the MRs for but I don't want them to be mad at him even though I doubt he will be applying for any more AmEx cards in the future.

He also did the Sapphire DD in August and we will be doing the referral then PC for the CSP later this year.

At least the teacher is trying to use an interesting topic. He could sit and do spelling/vocabulary packets like I had to do in junior high. My mom and aunt always helped my cousin and I because they were so hard. Sometimes they didn’t even know the answers!
So very true. They do get vocabulary also :) He is just not a writer. I am still constantly reminding him about using capitals and periods :)

So sorry for your DS. I wonder what they do for the students when they have to start reading those types of things in school. DS's 7th grade Honors ELA class just did a Survival Unit that them reading The Lottery and watching clips for Divergent and The Hunger Games for they could identify external and internal conflicts and how those conflicts effected the protagonist. He actually ended up watching them at home again so he could take more thorough notes for the essay he is writing today.
I think those are horrible choices. I personally would not read them. In 3rd grade the advanced reading class read Romeo and Juliet, which I think is a bit much personally, especially since we have seen suicide in our district. DS reads above grade level but since he has no interest in reading, he was not picked for LEAP. It’s only 10% of the kids which is 6 or 7 kids. Unfortunately we have no advanced math program, which is something he not only excels at but loves. I’m sure we’ll eventually have issues with assigned books. I’ve heard many parents complaining of books which were racially insensitive as well as situationally inappropriate.

I’d say typically about 7-10 days.

Amex is supposed to be replacing the SPG Lux cardstock with the new metal Bonvoy Brilliant cards any day now, and with the elevated 100k bonus running, there’s no telling if there will be delay.

When I applied for the SPG Lux in that 3-day window when I could have my Chase and eat Amex too, my SPG Lux was sent next day mail. But delivery times quickly slipped after that as Amex couldn’t keep up with demand and ran out of Lux cardstock.

In restrospect, I’m a terrible source for a current DP. I’m not sure if Amex is still expediting the SPG Lux/Bonvoy Brilliant (given that it’s a $450 AF card!), or it’s using snail mail these days.

Oh no, I wonder if my CU push worked to keep checking fee free. I guess I better check. (The initial deposit did trigger the bonus in Jan.)

My statement indicated the CU push DID work to waive the fees, it just didn't trigger the bonus. So just check your statement! It'll be clearly spelled out.

varies. Amex will expedite your card from their end, but the process with connecting/verification with the hotel needs to occur. believe this happens to every cobrand.
Once its verified, then Amex should be able to expedite it(if u get a knowledgeable rep).

if u request for a new card, u could also get it expedited... though i have seen many ppl do this when the card transferred over to the new name and still received a copy of their old card lol.
at least, thats what ive seen and read.

Amex has gotten feisty with me before on expedite requests. I called after getting approved for the Hilton Biz a couple months ago, and the rep said if I had a big purchase coming up so soon, maybe I should have applied for the card sooner.

Well, fine.

haha. Yeah, the no expedite happens to co brands... i mean, MR cards, they literally will give u the card # right after approval... lol.
Got my rose gold card and started using it the very next day via Samsung Pay.

LOL that's ridiculous!! I remembered reading your ring story way back when I read your TR! We didn't have any issues purchasing rings, but DH got two different sized titanium rings (one he wore at our wedding, got another one a couple months later in a smaller size) and didn't like either of them. I told him I didn't care if he wore a ring or not, but he ended up ordering one of the silicone ones and likes that.

I love my silicone wedding ring!!! I stopped wearing my engagement ring with my band when I had my first kid -the ring scratched the baby once (barely at all, but my poor baby!) and that was it. I wore a plain gold band for years, but then it kept getting scratched up at the gym, so I haven't worn a wedding ring at all for the last several years. I asked for one of the silicone ones for Christmas - its awesome - cute and SO comfortable, even at the gym... Thinking about getting another one in a different color for variety.

Hm, AmEx is fickle. I checked out the comments on the AmEx post and there's a report just the other week with the same issue. I wonder if it's random CSR's putting things through or it's really a change (or I totally missed the conversation here and have bad info stuck in my head :) )

But for the Gold card, were you going to downgrade to the Green card? If not, and you're straight cancelling it, there shouldn't be a problem getting the full refund. There's no proration for canceling, it's either a full refund or you paid the full fee.

WOW. I think I'd have a few choice words in response.

Wow, judgmental much?

We lucked out on ours but we had a legitimate scenario going on, where hubby applied for the card through the Hilton booking path like a week before his stay. They gave him a temp # with only a 1k limit until the card arrived - his stay was just over 1k. In theory AmEx probably would have approved the over the limit, but didn't want to risk it. The last rep that got it done totally understood the situation and eventually overnighted the card to hubby's hotel so he could check out with the AmEx. Now, in this instance it was totally our fault as a last minute, "hey why don't we get crazy points and meet a MSR with someone else's money" thought - but not a farfetched scenario, especially given that they want you to apply for the card while you're booking the hotel room (and it's Hilton, a week's stay can easily exceed 1k even in a modest location when done at the last minute). I don't think hubby would have been as kind if he got that rep on the phone :)

Potentially back to no Cafe Flora PP at SeaTac per DoC -

Update 2/27/19: At least one reader was turned away today, being told Priority Pass is currently not being accepted. They said they have ongoing issues that they hope to have resolved within the next two weeks. If you experience differently let us know.

Guess it's very YMMV at this point.

Whoa... I mean, I'm all for kids reading above their grade level, but that seems a little advanced.
I agree. As a teacher I would never choose that for third graders. To really understand Romeo and Juliet I feel like they should be in at least middle school if not high school.

Thanks for the insights! I guess I could ask our neighbor to pick it up, but it's no fun worrying about it on vacation. Or I could apply on the very last day while we're on the cruise (should be back by the time it gets here). We have internet included. But my DH will think I've gone off the deep end. :rotfl:

Or I could use that slot for the personal Plat instead (keeping him under 5/24). Seems I can pull up the 75k referral offer now that I have a personal Plat (couldn't before). So 75k + 15k referral is pretty close to 100k, which he may never get. Ah, decisions, decisions.

My kids are "grown" now (as much as they can be grown at 18 and 21), but I recall multiple times when I was shocked at the lack of insight shown by some teachers (at the middle school level specifically). Things were discussed and movies were watched that weren't necessarily "bad" - but not appropriate for the age group. Teachers of 12 year olds shouldn't assign Ted Bundy as a research topic, for example. And yes that happened! I mean no disrespect to teachers - most of my kids' teachers were great. But some of those situations still stick out in my mind.
