Thanks so much for posting this, as it was a total reminder for me. DH was offered temporary AA Platinum status on a promotion through Sept. 30 a few days ago, so I went ahead and registered him. We actually have an American flight booked on Sept. 22 (flying back from Memphis after attending the Cal/Ole Miss football game). I just went into DH's account and was able to change seats into Main Cabin Extra at no charge for the longer leg from DFW to BOI! (Nothing was available for the shorter Memphis to DFW leg.) But DH got 20 500-mile upgrades with the Platinum status, so I'm hopeful we'll be able to upgrade to the next class up when we check in for our flights. This is actually what happened to me when I booked last-minute flights on American to go to Florida when my Dad was in the hospital there. When I booked a couple days in advance, the only seats I could choose were middle sits in Economy. But when I went to check in a day later, I was able to choose Premium Economy for one leg and First Class for the other leg at no extra charge. At the time, I thought I had just been pixie-dusted for some reason. But now I realize it was because I had temporary Platinum status at the time, and it used two of my complementary 500-mile upgrades. (Sure enough, I now have 18 of the 20 I originally got left in my account -- the nice thing is that those upgrade certificates stay in your account even after the temporary Platinum status expires.) At the time I was offered the promotional Platinum status, I did not have any AA flights booked or planned, but so glad I registered anyway. I've learned just to register for these kinds of promotions because you never know what might come up in terms of travel.
