Is anyone else already actively working on 2021 vacation plans? I've already got my 2020 locked in with a Disney cruise and a trip to WDW for food and wine. I've got 2021 pretty narrowed down too.

I can't talk about this in real life - people would think I was insane planning trips that far in advance. But I can't be the only one, right?

Once I'm under 5/24, I'll be actively racking up URs again and I plan on using them for either Greece or Norway.

I am, but only because I was actively seeing if I could make a big trip happen in 2020 instead.

As many of you know, my wife travels to Japan every two months or so for work, and she brings home the coolest and cutest (kawaii!) gifts for our LO. So as far as our kiddo knows, Japan is the land of the coolest and cutest everything.

CjO9xnH.jpg

My wife wants to take our kiddo to Japan, and DD wants to go, but DD is only 5 (on her way to 6 very soon). Ideally, we'd want DD to grow up a little more before we go so she can handle the 11 hour flight, all the walking, and can better remember her first international trip, so we've been looking at 6 or 7. DW hates traveling to Japan in the summer (too hot and humid), so that's out; we usually spend Christmas and New Year in Hawaii, so that's out; and we don't want to take DD out of school for too long, so that leaves pretty much Spring Break, which also happens to coincide with Sakura season. So we've been eyeing the end of March/early April 2020 or 2021.

I promised my wife that I'd put her up in J or F class with all these points we've been earning, but then I'd need a seat for DD too; and the more I thought about it, I really don't want to be back in economy while the ladies are up in front, since I'm doing most of the heavy lifting earning these points. DW flies United for work, walks past the Polaris cabin every time, and wants to experience it herself. Alright.

The United devaluation really hit hard. I could have gotten a business saver fare in Polaris from SFO-NRT for 70k miles under the old award chart; now it's 175k miles and I don't even want to think about it creeping up once dynamic pricing settles in. To be fair, those Polaris seats (as in the "real" Polaris) from SFO-NRT go for $13k+ cash (so I guess 175k miles is still an amazing redemption), and economy on the same flight runs over $2k during Sakura season.

After United announced its devaluation, I just wanted to burn my United miles before they devalue even further, so I started searching for spring break 2020 availability. I was stalking 70k business saver awards on SFO-NRT, which turned out to be phantom inventory when I tried to book them. I'm sitting on 350k United miles, and my wife has about 70k United miles in her account, which when I transfer 105k UR to United is enough for 3 Polaris seats from SFO-NRT. But then, I'd need to figure out a return flight. The return flight is shorter, just under 10 hours, so DW doesn't mind coach on our way back, but I'd still need to transfer more URs or MRs to book a way home.

Then there are the hotels. We'd want to do 2-3 days at Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea, and I have the points to stay at the Sheraton Tokyo Bay (50k/night), but Tokyo Bay is a bit far from central Tokyo for the rest of our trip so we'd need another, more centralized hotel. Marriott was only showing the Sheraton Tokyo Bay and the Westin Tokyo available on points for a party of 3 during our dates (Marriott's hotels blocking out award bookings during Sakura season?), many of the Hilton hotels were showing as sold out, and the more I thought about it, you know, I'd really like to stay at the Park Hyatt Tokyo and enjoy some Suntory Time like Bill Murray.

The Park Hyatt Tokyo was available and only 30k/night! But regrettably, DW and I have no Hyatt points, so that's more URs I'd have to transfer over to make this trip happen in 2020.

By now, I'm conservatively estimating that I'd need to transfer at least 360k UR to various programs to make Japan happen in spring 2020, just so I can burn my 350k United miles ASAP. I took a step back, reconsidered what I was doing and decided to make this trip in 2021. DD will be another year older, and hopefully travel better. The new Beauty and the Beast attraction at Tokyo Disneyland will have opened this year. (Sadly, the Ghibli theme park isn't expected to open until 2022.) There's definitely a high risk of devaluation if I wait another year. Marriott is expected to implement peak pricing sometime this year, and Sakura season will very likely qualify for peak pricing. Both Hyatt and Marriott may bump up the categories of the hotels I'm looking at. United's dynamic pricing might eventually swing even higher than 175k miles for a one-way Polaris seat. ANA may go dynamic or devalue its insanely good deal for J and F RT. But in the meantime, I'll keep building up URs and MRs, maybe pick up a United card or two, and definitely get the Hyatt card for DW and I, so we don't have to transfer over as many URs. I was thinking of boarding the GrAAvy train for AA miles -- to be used on flights (gasp!) on AA or One World metal might also open up some options for the return flight.

So what are we doing for spring 2020? We're talking about Seattle or Orlando.

I didn't realize you could avoid the fee. Edit: it was @platmama: I see fee posted at another time time. Is there a way to check when it will post?

I'm not aware of how to check when it will post. Based on my one card, it was 2 days after I applied for one online on 2/14. It didn't arrive for a couple of weeks, so I didn't start using it until 3/3, and my first fee posted on the 3/16 on the statement, with the $6.95 pulled from my account on 3/17. I wanted to give myself some buffer around the 17th, so I made sure the balance was 0 by 4/9 and my statement shows the fee waived on 4/16.

I was surprised this place is "only" 35k - https://www.holidayinnresorts.com/hotels/us/en/orlando/disfs/hoteldetail

I was looking around for somewhere with a quick/cheap flight to use up our last nights and then after reading all about it realized we could go there with a restricted cert  Unless people have been and it's not a good as is looks? And there's a bunch of nicer properties that are still around 40k... just not in NYC.

I know! That looks pretty cool. I'd definitely give it a whirl next year when our 40k night is loaded. Yeah, it looks like it won't be of any use in NYC. But as long as I can use the FN cert easily DLR or WDW then it's a keeper. We are in WDW nearly every month and in DLR at least once a year but I can see us going more often. Last I checked none of the properties were less than $49 a night. Granted this will likely prevent DH from picking up a small DVC contract at Grand California but that's ok too.

You might also want to look at AA miles to fly JAL. Their business class product is really good.

I'll chime in with suggestions on DLR from the perspective of a frequent visitor to WDW and yearly-ish visitor to DLR. Some of the highlights I think a first time visitor should not miss are Paint the Night Parade. The song has become a theme song for our squad LOL I don't like parades as a rule but this one and Boo to You during MNSSHP are exceptions for me. World of Color shouldn't be missed. We usually get a dinner package but they also have a dessert party and FP as options over waiting to get a good spot. Fantasmic is different than WDW and has FP options. PoC and HM are different from WDW's and must do's whenever we go. Kudos on getting reservations at Blue Bayou, that is also a favorite. Looks like an awesome trip!

I second Paint the Night. LOVE the parade and the song is so catchy! We also did a Blue Bayou lunch on our first visit and it was great. We ate lunch at Lamplighter’s Lounge (I think that’s what it’s called?) in DCA last trip and that was really good.

Thanks! I don't think Paint the Night is running currently, but I'm super excited for everything DL!

Me too!! I leave for Disneyland with my two boys next week also. Can't wait! It's been cold and rainy here for the past two weeks, and I'm looking forward to some sun. I'm hoping we'll get lucky and the crowds will be like they were a few weeks ago. Your trip sounds great, have fun!!
Agree, hope the crowds are low and the scrim over the castle comes down!

Haven’t had time to catch up on the thread yet today but on checking emails I have an offer for SW card 60k SUB/$2k spend which seems better than public offer. I am 5/24, but one card was 5/17/17. It shows as 5/1/17 on Experian. Should I risk an app now, or wait and risk the offer going away? If denied today, I have to wait 30 days to apply again, correct?

Idk how ur DD is but when my siblings were 6-7 I would have rather been in economy alone than be in first and have to deal with them on an 11 hour flight lol. I wouldn’t leave your wife alone with your DD though. I would not be happy if SO did that to me with our hypothetical kids lol

And I just received an email that Dosh just turned 2 so all of the %s are increased an extra 2%! Of course, Dunkin was added yesterday after I had already been there earlier in the morning.

I was just coming here to ask about that. I'm app-less at the moment (phone's out for repair) so I got the email but couldn't see if they updated values at all. I think Dunkin and BB&B were 2%, so they'll be 4% this weekend? Staples is also included so that should be 5%? Have no idea what the max is though without the app.

There's a fine print saying we'll see the extra the week of 5/13 so I guess it won't go pending at the same time as the purchase.

Why, oh why, is Citi teasing and taunting me! It's been a week since I received my welcome letter and still no credit card! And then they send an email to watch a video about my card membership! If it doesn't arrive tomorrow, I will be calling to complain.

Ouch. AF's for the Sapphire cards posted yesterday as they said. Eye opener when you check your balances after that CSR one.:earseek:
Don't know why but I planned for the $150 effective AF, and have that money ready to go, while also totally failing to connect that I need to front the other $300 while I work off the travel credit. :headache: Still worth it, just a bit of a shock when you see the numbers.

However I perked right up when I saw the Chase offers on my desktop! Don't know if they'll be there the next time I log in, but I'm loving it for today. I have 15% off Hyatt on my CSR which says I only have 8 days left but it absolutely never showed on my phone app before and I didn't think I saw it when I checked the email links. So I believe the reports that you may see different offers between all the access points.

I've got the Hyatt offer also. It wasn't there yesterday as I checked both my phone and my desktop yesterday.

Added it anyway but unless I can buy a gift card with it, it's not going to work for me.

Are you talking about SW? If so you have a little time, it went public today and expires 6/10.

Dunkin is showing 4% in the app and the pic on the email showing it going to 6%. Maybe the app won't show the add'l 2% and they'll just add it? I'll check again tomorrow morning to see if they have changed.

Yeah, I definitely misremembered Dunkin. I went back and let it show the pictures and Dunkin will be 6%, BB&B 4% and Staples 5%. Promo ends on Sunday but doesn't say when it starts, just keeps saying weekend. I assume it starts now then?

I'm so mad I don't have Staples yet in Dosh!
\

That stinks! And seems weird if you have Staples near you. Maybe it's worth reaching out to Dosh. Or trying to delete and reinstall the app. And while it's not the same my local store didn't come up either but it did track. Maybe worth a small purchase just to see if it would work.

$550 AF just posted on my converted Amex MB Plat. I was thinking I'd keep it anyway since I want to stay on Amex's nice list, and between the airline incidentals, Uber, and Saks credits, and Amex Offers, this card is basically a wash for me. I'll have my Biz Plat for Centurion Lounge access until at least August or September. But after that, I don't want to churn through another personal Platinum (i.e. Ameriprise, Charles Schwab, or Morgan Stanley) yet because I'm trying to stay under 5/24 until later this year to pick up a few more cards from Chase. Another two cards won't drop off my */24 count until April 2020, so I need to slow my roll.

I called into Amex's retention department (1-800-452-3945). The rep looked up my account, noticed my spend on the Plat was only "average"* and I have "all these other cards, the Gold, the Biz Plat, a Biz Green, all the Bonvoys, why would [ I] want to keep the Plat?" So tables turned, I list the things I value about the Plat, but tell him that practically speaking, for most things I'm spending on every day, the Plat is a 1x MR card, whereas the other Amex cards in my wallet offer more rewarding bonus categories and I'll put my spend where I get a better bonus. The rep says he'll see if they can offer me some sort of spending bonus that'll help me put more spend on the Plat, puts me on hold for a minute, and comes back with 30k MR for $4k spend in 3 months. Done. Took the offer.

*ETA total spend in the past year was only about ~$11.5k. The rep did say I did "pretty good" a few months ago, which I'm guessing refers to over the holidays and when we bought our Casper mattress, when the statement balances were in the thousands vs. a few hundreds usually. Amex obviously cares about spend.

Ugh - I kinda wish you hadn't posted this, because I'm about to call to change my Plat to Gold. Slightly tempted to see if I can get a retention offer, but I actually have a second Plat that I got before the MB was changed to the regular Plat, so I can't see any way that I could justify needing to keep this Plat when I have put hardly any spend on either. I'll try to increase my spend some on the Plat (the one I'm keeping) before October, which is when that AF will post.
