Okay so I need to vent. This past Tuesday, 4/27, I lost my job. It was not due to the economy, but I am in the same boat as those. Now I'm facing no income until I find a job which is tough in this economy. Right now I am trying to find anything to help support myself. I'm looking at babysitting in the meantime while I try to find something in my field, which is social work.

I applied for unemployment, but might not be eligible because I was, dare I say it, fired. Eeek! :scared1: It all depends on what my former employer says about me. I won't find anything out until May 17 at the earliest.

I am however greatful that I could pay 2 months worth of bills just in case and might have 28-68 hours of vacation time check coming to me.

Well, thank you for letting me vent. Any insight/support is appreciated. I know I can count on it here.

I understand a bit of what you are going through at this time.

Well, relax some for part of the day tomorrow and on Sunday work on a resume and check in local temp. agencies for maybe office work. Try to think out of the box for the Social work degree. You may want to look into working with the older gemneration for a change of pace or with an agency that works with the disabled children/adults. I'm not sure how you would like to check into the hospice field, but my MIL and us appreciated the case worker assigned to my late FIL.

oops: Sorry for the run ons/naughty grammar at 230am.

So sorry to hear the bad news! I am amazed and really respect your honesty. No real suggestion here but sometimes these difficult situations force a life change that works out for the better. I will be sure to say a prayer for you today so that everything works out perfectly and that you don't get to discouraged along the way. Good luck and keep your head up!

So sorry to hear about the job loss Christine. No mtter how is comes about it is always a terrible thing to go through.

Remember, when 1 door closes another opens, just be ready to see that open door :)

 Around here agencies that work with elderly and disabled are always looking for capable employees.

First, sorry to hear you lost your job.

As a "human service" agencies, we are always looking for people with social work degrees. So as a PP suggested try these agencies in your area. The challenge for you may be the pay is not always that great.

My second suggestion is to make sure that you understand the circumstances around your job loss and what you have learned. This will help you with your next job.

Good luck! Hope your job search is a quick one!

I've been fired too. One thing is depending on the circumstances of why & how you were "seperated from employment" (sorry sounds much nicer then that Trump yelling YOUR FIRED in your head) you can file an appeal.
Mine was a catch 22-- I could have appealed it due to underlying circumstances & things that my former boss was doing, however, I was also at fault for a portion of the situation.

Best advice that was ever given to me: "we all get fired once in our careers, so don't sweat it"

Yes, with this economy jobs are tough. I have a friend who has been an excellent bookkeeper for many many years, worked with the govt etc, and she has been unemployed for almost 2 years now. Unemployment has run out for her & she's scraping. HOWEVER.....where she lives, she has enrolled in a STATE FUNDED program where it assists WOMEN learning new job skills- such as masonry, carpentry, building, electrical etc. AND they help with finding them jobs once they achieve all of their certifications. So seriously don't just stick with what you know & what you went to school for. See what else is out there, learn a new trade or job. She has been so excited since she's started this course & she can't wait to graduate it. AND she's 53 yrs old. I admire her for being so courageous & strong.

DON'T SWEAT IT!

I wish you the best of luck in your job searching.

Hugs, friend! I was going to start a thread for you myself, but wasn't sure if I should or not. I am glad you came here for some pixie dust. Just think, your Cali trip is already paid for so you can enjoy it without a problem!

I'm sorry to hear about your job loss. No matter how it happens it's not easy to deal with. A couple of books that come to mind: "From Fired to Hired" by Tory Johnson and "48 Days to the Work You Love" by Dan Miller; both are recommended by Dave Ramsey. His book is excellent for finances in general; it's "The Total Money Makeover"--he would say that you are in an emergency and you should cut all unnecessary expenses and save cash until you find another job.

Not quite. I still have to come up with spending $ and pay off the wdw trip by 8/13.

UPDATE: I applied for a job in preseving families who are referred by child protection services. I also put myself on babysitting websites, I have 8+ years experience. Thanks to everyone for their support. I obviously did not enter the field with $ on my mind. I love working with people and if I have to I'll work with geriatrics. Thanks

I am picturing families put up in canning jars lined up on a shelf.

I wish you the best in you finding a job. Keep you spirits up. Talk to lots of people, they may know someone who knows someone who may have a lead. And keep on being open to "anything".

You're funny. It's mostly for families to regain their children.

Thanks everyone. I have been keeping my options open. I had always wanted to be an event planner, specifically weddings. I actually might want to look into it in the future. I'm almost done wiht my master's and feel that it would have been a waste of time to not pursue my degree. I love my career. Hey, I just might do an event planning gig on the side.

I really do appreciate the support and feedback.

:grouphug::grouphug: I lost my job in October it is scary! I have yet to find one but I am holding off until after summer so I don't have to put my kids in day care.

A good baby sitter is hard to find especially with experience. My friend hires a sitter she got off a web site and pays a good hourly rate in cash. :rolleyes1

There are some good websites where people are looking for sitters or nannies.

Good luck!

I put myself on sittercity.com and another one that I cannot recall the name of. There are some part time babysiting jobs out there that I have to apply for , but am waiting a few days in case I get a call back for an application I put in on Friday.

:wizard: Wishing you a successful week! and who knows...maybe it will be your dream job that was meant to be.

Unsolicited advice - finish that masters!!

I assume that it is in Social Work. Make sure you go back to the places that you have done your clinical work - they can be references but more importantly are important parts of your network - even if they are not hiring, they are connected to other places that could be.
