I Just Saw the most incredible PSA or "ad".

Careful...this IS a Disney board :rotfl:

I guess we can't talk about deepfrying balls (even if they are made from chickpeas :wave2:

Actually falafel is probably popular with the Kurds (just trying to tie the two together ;) )

I am listening to Fox News and I heard an "ad" come on. I didn't turn around to look. The message starts out (paraphrased). "The goal of Saddam was to kill all Kurds; he failed, "Thank you America, thank you, and then it has different voices of men, women, children in their native and English language saying thank you." I didn't see the image until the last part. That said, A thank you from "Kurdistan, the other Iraq". I was so touched that I have tears in my eyes. Its a reminder of why we went!

The source for this was indeed questionable. Furthermore white phosphorus is not even a chemical weapon but an incendiary bomb that is used to create fire. Falugia was a terrorist strong hold and women and children were ordered to leave. Those left behind knew that an attack on Falugia would soon be coming.
The only white phosphorus used in Falugia was star burst.

I heard on the radio this morning from an ex-soldier that white phosphorus can be "weaponized"

We do not "weaponize" it.

We do not "weaponize" it. If anything, our soldiers go to extremes to minimize civilian casualties at serious risk to themselves. I am tired of the media portrayal of our troops as "jack booted thugs" and I am sickened by the number of Americans who believe it.

It sounds like a nice ad, Dawn. I hope my husband gets to see it when he gets home. I know it will make him feel appreciated...

1 - This is not a "PSA". Public Service Announcements are not paid for by outside interests. If that were the case, then campaign commercials could be called "PSA"'s. This is a commercial. Period.

2 - It was paid for by a group called the "Kurdistan Development Corporation". This is an organization that is trying to encourage business interests in the region, headed by several highly (and foreign) educated men and women that, I can promise you, were nowhere near any of the people shown in that commercial during the time (20 years ago) when Saddam was using chemical weapons on the Kurds.

So, if we're going to talk about this, let's at least do so honestly. This is a commercial designed to entice people into investing in business interests in that region. I can only guess that they are smart enough to realize that many Americans will be gullible enough to believe that this "thank you" is coming from the Kurdish people, not from a group trying to make a buck.

Well....I suppose that's not really a "guess"...but you get the point.

Sadly, as with most everything nowdays, if you have a question, follow the money and you'll get the answer.

I wouldn't expect anything else from these biased "news" stations. The FCC requires them to run a certain amount of these "PSA's" so it has become very standard for the networks to produce or seek out ones that fit their slant.

In fact, the only thing worse that there are no real "PSA's" anymore is that people will post threads pretending they are genuine to fit their extreme bias.

Jynohn - Let your husband know that his sacrifice is appreciated so much, even by the folks who don't approve of this war.

And we thank you and your family for willingly giving up your husband to fight.

Just because I am against the administration and their reasons for this war, in no way diminishes my deep appreciation and my gratitude for the men and women who serve this country. My beef is with the administration that knowingly and willingly put our brave men and women into a bad situation, strictly for their own gain. In fact, I have an even deeper respect for our troops, because they continue to fight under adverse conditions (such as having to buy their own body armor) and bad decisions by their commanders. Why? Because these are the same men and women that will fight to protect our fair country, no matter what the situation.

So, thank you for your sacrifice and thank you to your husband for his sacrifice.

May your husband have a safe and speedy journey home!

Thanks Dawn! Will keep an eye out for it. I am sure DH would like to see it.
Have actually seen the Cindy Sheehan "ad" on Fox, but not this!

And btw Independent, they have not been buying their own body armor for quite awhile. :) Guess the media has not followed up lately on that one.

The whispering commerical is the one for Quilted Northern. I really like that one too!

Just one example, which I used because it was so heavily published. And actually, our local station just interviewed parents who just a few months ago had to shell out $$$ for armor for their son. So, that leaves me to believe that there still is a problem in some areas of our armed forces.

But if my respect for the troops is only "ok" if I accept the administration's reasons for this war, then maybe I should rethink my position.

Glad your husband is home safe and sound.

Please continue to congratulate each other on the fine job we've done. :goodvibes (please spare me the line about not supporting the military though, it's a warped record at this point.)
AuntPolly...is that you?

Oh I think she's still here. And I never said I missed her, just thinking out loud that the above poster is her reincarnate.

That ad sounds all nice and propaganda-y to me. ;)

I get the sense those opposed to the war are following the crowd more than anything else. There was overwhelming acceptance going in, and for the most part it has gone very well. President Bush went out of his way to warn us it wouldn't be fast or easy.

Yet the media is quick to point out every problem. It's a WAR, of course there will be problems. The big picture is the Iraqis support our efforts. Just as critical, if not more, is the fact we are fighting and defeating terrorists in Iraq, rather than New York or Miami. Think about this. Really. Clear your head of preconceived thoughts on this war, and answer this. If this war is really pointless, then why are so mnay outside insurgents interested in keeping Iraq from becoming a democracy? Because they know all too well that the population of Iran is rather pro-West and it will stir them up for change in Iran to ane evn higher degree. Pressure will be on Saudi Arabia. Suddenly countries like Syria have to get on board or be outcasts in the region.

I can't begin to cover the entire world picture in one post, but I think it's important to understand there is FAR more at stake than throw away lines like "war for oil" or "where are WMDs?" This is about remving a dictator who thumbed his nose for years at the UN, and relace him with a form of democracy. And the consequences of that is world changing.
