I just saved my husband's life!

How frightening! Praise God (and you) he is ok!

My Mom had to do it to me when I was about 11 or 12, choking on a roasted potato. She says she will never forget it.

Great job!!

That's what I always thought, too, but it was just automatic. While it was happening I was thinking "this isn't really happening, it's just a bad dream". Someone in a previous post mentioned using a chair to do it to yourself but I had never heard of that. DH did, though, and he made sure we all knew how to do it later last night. My girls were so scared. My 11 year old said that if she's ever home alone she's never going to eat anything. Thank you all for the nice comments.

Way to go!!! Your husband is so lucky to have you there.

This deserves a really BIG box of candy on Valentines Day

Thank goodness you were there, way to go... :thumbsup2

I had to do that to my father about 10 years ago when he choked on a handfull of M&Ms. It is scary but what a relief when it works!!! My father learned not to eat his favorite treat by the handfulls anymore :)

Great job and lots of hugs!

We were at a cookout when ds was 2 and I didn't notice that he grabbed a hotdog off a plate and took a bite. He was standing up and had his back to me and I noticed him starting to sway....something in my head just said he's choking on a hotdog (real common with kids) and I reached behind him and pulled and out it shot. I couldn't believe it worked, and more than that, I couldn't believe I somehow knew what was wrong and what to do. Still makes me shake!

Even if you all don't have training, just do it....

Since then I've taken an all day CPR and First Aid class, (They're usually offered free through your local fire department.) and when anyone acted hesitant, the instructors would say...

"What are the person's chances if you do nothing? 0, and What are the person's chances if you do something?...better than 0!"

Also something to keep in the back of your head, I knew someone who's brother choked at a cookout and fell into the pool. They thought he was just drowning and no one thought to do the Heimlich and he couldn't be revived.
