I Just Got Fired - Long.

I got fired from a stupid summer job once. It sucked because I loved being there, but I was 18 and made a stupid mistake. I guess all you can do now is live and learn...

I would have gone about firing you so fast your head would be spinning!

Hmmm. . .I've written up people for insubordination for less than that. You may be back at work now, but I can assure you a file is being kept on you and the first thing they are going to do is look at your computer's IP address and determine what you have been doing on the internet. Calling out a boss on their personal matters is a sure-fire way to have yours examined.

For future reference, the word is "peon" meaning working class person; foot soldier, etc. It has nothing to do with urination.

Good luck with your future employment.
I'm think they were trying to be funny. It's not working.

Please tell me I'm reading this wrong.

You called your boss out on Friday for doing personal things on company time yet you are DISsing at work?

That takes some gumption. Hope nobody decides to check your history folder on the company computer!

You're reading it wrong; I didn't have any work on my desk so I went on a break and decided to DIS for a few.

And if you read, instead of skim, you'd see that I didn't call her out for doing personal stuff, as there are times when I have something personal to do also. I called her out b/c there were things she could have done, but chose not to. I, on the other hand, take care of what I'm being paid for 1st!

Ugh, I hate my boss.

I am a part-time administrative assistant. I left my old part-time job (with holiday, sick and vacation leave) b/c I wasn't a "true" admin asst. I found this job and was told that I was to be a back-up to the "office manager". I love what I do and what that consists of is booking flights, cars and hotels for sales guys, typing itineraries, filing, etc. Another part of my job was to answer the daily foreign quote requests via email. Now my boss and I shared this job. Every day for one hour, I would sit at her desk and reply to the quote requests, enter the quotes in the system and file the emails away. Now, USUALLY my boss prints them out in the morning and hands them to the National Sales Manager so he can write the prices on them, then she leaves them at her desk for me to do. Whatever quote requests come in after 2 PM are SUPPOSED to be done by her. Lately, all she can spend her time doing is personal stuff so I'm stuck trying to reply to quote requests that I have to do and that she should have done. But you know what? I GET IT DONE!

I know that people do personal stuff at work, I know I do. But I also know that I don't surf the net, or check e-mails or plan my Disney trip while I have something else to do. I'm the type of person that hurries up, does what needs to be done and then I screw around.

But yesterday was the final straw..I'm working on the sales presentation for the yearly trip to Vegas. This includes booking all flights, reserving group space at the hotel, planning the menu, looking up restaurants and making dinner and show reservations, typing the itineraries and assembling the PowerPoint presentation. I LOVE DOING THIS. This is the part of the job that makes me really happy. Last year when I did this, my boss had no problem picking up the slack on the foreign quotes b/c I was busy. This year, it's been a little slow so I've been doing the quotes each day. But yesterday, I was given the numbers for the graphs that were to go in the presentation. Now, I'm only part time, so I had to take 6 months worth of numbers for 8 markets and graph them, format the graphs and then put them into the presentation. And I'm so anal about aesthetics in my work so it takes me a bit to make sure everything is uniform and eye-pleasing. She comes over to my desk at 1 and tells me, "I'm going to lunch, there are only a couple of e-mails", so I said "I'm busy doing graphs" and she just left. Now maybe I'm wrong, but I took her silence as a don't worry, you keep doing what you're doing b/c it's important. When she comes back from lunch, she throws a hissy fit b/c the emails aren't done at which point I told her that I was trying to get the graphs done and I figured she could do them. Now, she pulls out the boss card and says, "we'll it's your job". So I got pissed and said "well maybe you could've gotten them done if you weren't busy refilling your cat's prescription, booking your sisters flight and finding a new oil company for your house". I WAS WRONG PEOPLE I know that, but it was true:mad: . So she got really pissed and went off on the National Sales Manager for giving me stuff to do b/c since she's the office manager, she has to delegate my work.

Now, I know I'm wrong for calling her out, but am I right somewhere?

I would say that is calling her out on personal stuff.

I know you are 33 but I'm curious if this is your first job?

Nope. Worked in the city as an admin asst for 11 years before settling on a p/t job in the 'burbs. I work p/t b/c it allows me to be home for my children.

Good luck with your future employment.

I was using it as a metaphor, as in "I won't be peed on". But thanks!

I don't understand how you feel that intentionally helping the the SVP while ignoring the requests of your immediate supervisor wasn't wrong. Looking through the eyes of your supervisor (which is what I am trying to do), I would have felt like this: "She chose to point out things that I am doing that I am not proud about at work, which cut me like a knife. Then to add insult to the injury, she purposely chose to help out the SVP to save her behind while continuing to ignore my requests and being rude to me." Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if every action you take from here on out is not carefully documented. I would do it for one of my subordinates. As a matter of fact, I am right now. While her reaction was in no way professional in manner, I feel you would have been better off to begin with stating, "I did not realize you needed those completed. I was trying to complete these graphs. I have some time now to help. Is there something I can do?" (Instead of pulling work off of the SVP's desk, which I think you did to save yourself from getting into hotter water.)

Knowing you are good at what you do is great, but there is such a thing as humility. Doing flawless work is nice, but won't get you far if you can't be a team player.

ITA.

The OP may have won this battle, but the boss will win the war.

Also, I don't believe "pee-on" as being a play on words, it was a mistake and should have been peon.

The powers that be are going to be watching you closely. I'd stay off the internet during business hours, never make a personal phone call, etc. especially since you called out the boss for doing personal things on business time.

Be careful...

Nothing good comes out of situations like this. Transferring may be difficult, also, once they let others know what kind of worker you are.

I'd rather have a thousand employees with good attitudes than one with a smart mouth who does "excellent work".

I have to agree with the consensus here. You may think everything is blown over, but I'd be willing to bet that your boss hasn't forgotten and neither has the AVP. You may ask for a transfer to work with another group, but I think you've already been pegged as being a difficult employee and they're not going to easily forget what happened.

I would be very careful. Your boss is going to watch you like a hawk and probably start writing you up for every little thing. She isnt going to want to work with you.

I've been reading this thread and kind of shaking my head in amazement. Your labour laws are screwy, and your unemployment system stinks. It seems your country is very "pro-employer/screw the employee". Very odd.

OP...you sound like you are a trouble maker at work.

I think that you focus too much on everyone else's behavior, seem to think that you are flawless and go to great lengths to convince others as to why you (think that you) are superior.

It just builds walls all around you and then you will feel (and be) alone. Don't do that to yourself. Lighten up and join the team.
