This may be against the rules, but I'm venting about something that happened on one of the other boards on the DIS...I was nice about it on the original thread, but it just keeps stewing in my mind and I just can't let it go. It makes me more and more upset the more I think about it.
It was a conversation about Ellen on American Idol. People were talking about why they think or do not think she will make a good judge on the show. That's fine. Things were civil. One person even chimed in and said that he/she doesn't agree with Ellen morally. And while that makes me a little sad, that was OK too.
But then on around the second page, someone piped in about how Ellen is "rude, lewd, and crude" and "doesn't know how to keep her mouth in check", is how I believe the person put it. It really bothered me, but I just shrugged it off at first. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought that this person has no clue who Ellen Degeneres is. OBVIOUSLY. Or those things wouldn't have been said. Ellen is probably farther from ANY of those things than anyone in the history of the world!
Many people spoke up (including myself) and told the person that he must have Ellen mixed up with someone else. That she has always been nothing but a kind, sensitive, generous person, sweet as can be. And he never came back to defend his position.
So the more I thought, the more I feel like this person made a judgement about her simply because she's a lesbian. :guilty: He obviously has never watched her talk show, or there's absolutely no way that he would have said those idiotic, hateful words about her. And sadly, I base my opinion partly on things that this person has said in the past (in regards to his political and religious beliefs).
I don't know. I should just let it go. But it gets more and more unbearable to just sit back and watch people degrade other human beings and show such utter disdain for others simply based on who they love. It's disgusting and I don't know how to stifle it any longer. I wish I could say this to the person who caused this whole post. But I have no proof that my feelings are correct. So to attack him would make me the lesser person. So here I sit angry and unable to do anything about it...
OK, vent over.

ETA: I do suppose it's POSSIBLE that this person had Ellen confused with Rosie. Rosie does have sort of an "endearing" way of saying what she feels without filter. :D But still, to get the two confused and go off on a message board without having your facts in check is just ignorant. Not to mention that fact the it's the old "lumping us all together" thing. Do we really all look alike, us lesbians??? LOL

It is hard to shake off the bad feelings that come about from some of the posts, isn't it? But really, in the grand scheme, you have bigger fish to fry than to worry about some jerk on a message board.

I think Ellen is a peculiar choice for an AI judge, but I love her sense of humor and I enjoy her comedy, her talk show, etc. :)

He may have just confused her with someone else, maybe Rosie, we do all look alike :lmao:

You really shouldn't let one ignorant person get under your skin like that. Usually there is nothing you can say to change their minds and you just end up getting frustrated.

It's the other people who haven't been exposed to gay people or don't know they've been expose that I like to concentrate on. These are usually the people who you can show that we're just like everyone else.

LOL, muggsie!! I must have been typing my "ETA" at the same time you were typing your post...I guess even if we don't all "look" alike, we do think alike!! :lmao:

And you guys are right. I know it's a waste of time trying to convince one person to change his mind (when we all know that some people will just never change). But with people like the person in question, I think it's more than that. Quite honestly it's OK to me that he has his beliefs and that my sexual orientation just doesn't fit into them. That's OK. It's just that little part of me that can't stand to sit back and let people think it's OK to trash talk gay people. The more we let it happen, and the more people think it's OK, the farther we'll keep falling in our fight for equal rights.

I will let this go because I know there's not much I can do at this point. But I don't plan to back down on people like that in the future. People can think and believe what they want. That's part of what makes this country great. But I won't stand for someone just blindly degrading and defaming a person in public just for being gay. I've had it up to here with it all.

Yeah, it's kind of funny.
Sort of off topic. This remined me of when "Ellen's Energy Adventure" just opened or right after she came out publicly or were they around the same time, I don't quite remember. But DP and I were in line and this woman and her husband were wondering out loud if they should go into the ride as Ellen is a lesbian and all. We were amused. They went on the ride and I believe they came out unscathed.

ChrizJen, I had something similar happen quite a few years ago and it still bothers me. It's hard to shake off sometimes, isn't it?

My wife and I had the great misfortune to be on a Disney bus seated near a man who kept referring to Ellen as Ellen Degenerate and how disgusted he was that Disney allowed "those degenerates" to be a part of an attraction. He had a teen girl with him (maybe his daughter) and she looked pretty pained.

The bus was silent but for this miserable git going on and on about Ellen.

Clearly, years later it still bothers me.

I have always loved Ellen's sense of humor (especially when she talked about her grandmother). The person posting mixed her up with someone else and I really feel sad that they don't know the difference.

 That person clearly didn't know her from Adam. as Bugs Bunny would say, "What a Maroon!";)

Kind of on the same track.... I am still mad at DISNEY  for taking the name "buy the book" off of the coffee shop in DHS!

ChrizJen you are such a sweetie and have a tender heart. Having a tender heart is a double edged sword. I know because I do too. I understand why this has upset you and I agree with you.

This is what you need to remember he is a complete and total moron. The fact he doesn't even know who Ellen is is purely stupid in the first place. Then to make such ignorant comments about her puts his mental abilities back with the cavemen. One of my things to do with people like him is to pretend that he doesn't exist in my world anymore. ;)

Sadly I'm sure you will have other chances to stand up for the right thing and set people straight.

Me too! And I remember getting a huge coffee mug there as a gift for someone and next time we went back you couldn't get them anymore.

Last time I disagreed with a poster who was defaming gay people on the community board I got points, so I would say, just let it go or be prepared to get slapped for being 'argumentative'. :rolleyes1

I really think they were thinking of Rosie...I've never ever heard Ellen be out of line, I've seen ALL of her standups, she rarely swears! I mean, this is ELLEN!! The same person who cried on TV about her giving her dog away, remember that? How tender hearted is that?? Hasn't she been dubbed, "America's Sweetheart of daytime TV?" I mean come on folks...those people clearly had an agenda. Just move on, it will always be there, and really, Ellen doens't need anyone to defend her, she's happily married, successful, love by millions...something those people will never be!;)

I still have mine!
