This afternoon, I was called into my bosses office and was told that I no longer had a job effective TODAY! I have been at the office for 15 years and have been the accountant for the last 2 years. When I took over as the accountant I got minimal training and had to learn alot of it on my own.

I realize now that my previous boss had actually set me up to fail. He was a real jerk. (That's another story in itself). On this year's audit the CPA found a deposit in Quickbooks that had not cleared. The deposit showed up on December's statement, but was dated for last April. There is no other paperwork for this deposit such as a deposit slip, payment made in our campaign software etc. It was a very odd amount and did not help balance the bank statement or anything else. Then the mail hasn't been picked up everyday and so some bills were not paid on the two dates that we pay them (1st & 15th).

I have been under alot of stress with everything at work because I found things that were supposed to be done, that weren't but I did not know they were to be done. As I said I did not get alot of training. Some things were just touched on and no real detail was given for them. Last year I had to figure out some things myself and made detailed notes for them, so that I could do them again this year.

They did give me a severance package, but still it is really depressing to be let go after all this time. I have really tried my best and there have been some very trying, stressful times with this job.

I had a feeling something was up when some one called a couple months back saying that another person had recommended they contact my boss about some accounting work. Then another person brought in her resume'. They also did not give me my performance review in May. What really bugs me is that they gave me no warning on this. Did not tell me that they had a problem with my work or anything.

All I know is that even though I had made a book to cover some of the things to do with my job, it does not cover everything, so in a couple months, they are going to have some problems and lots of questions and they will probably be calling me with them. I will have no problem telling them I can't help them.

Wow - sounds like you have been in trouble for awhile - I know hindsight is 20/20, but maybe you should have stepped down from your position once you realized you were in over your head.

The missing/found months later deposit and bills not being paid on time are pretty serious violations for someone in your position... we quite honestly nearly fired our (outside) bookkeepers for similar circumstances, but instead are going to watch their practices more closely - unfortunately, their prices are so competitive we really can't move.

I know PCB is a small area - any chance of something else when your severence runs out?

I can only give these out :hug::hug::hug: I am sorry you have joined this not so exclusive group.

I'm so sorry!

Take a day to breathe and then jump right back into the job search. Don't let yourself stagnate, which unfortunately I did.

I really loved my job and it wasn't until this year that I started having problems. Not only was I the accountant, but the CFC Coordinator and FSECC Coordinator.

With the bills not being paid, we received some bills after the 1st or the 15th because the mail was not picked up (Not my job and I had brought this up to my boss). So they were set to be paid on the next bill paying date. We did not receive two bills in June and I found out when we received the next bill.

Unfortunately there are not alot of jobs in our area. I will start looking, but I do not know what I will be able to get.

I wish they had just hired another accountant and let me do the other positions. I would have loved that. I was comfortable with doing those two jobs.

I am so sorry that this happened to you. I pray that you will be able to get a new job soon. :littleangel:

I'm very sorry this happened to you. I'm an accountant, I have a bachelors in accounting and an MBA. It sounds to me like they put you in a job that was over your head (accounting is not really a learn as you go type of thing) and on top of that, Quickbooks is not a very good accounting program for someone who is not very knowledgable; it's just too easy to have huge errors that are difficult to find since you cannot close periods and it has virtually no audit trail.

What a shame that your prior 13 years of loyalty there did not make up for your lack of training in a job they never should have given you. Good luck and I hope you find something better really soon.

Man, that really blows. The least they coulda done was transfer you to another position for your 15 years of service. Hope you find something real soon.

Sorry to hear about your job.

Everything happens for a reason, so I'm sure there will be something for you just around the corner. :)

I'm sorry. IMO, you were treated shabbily.

I'm so sorry. But I hope that this will ultimately prove to be the start of something even better!

Sounds like you were in over your head for a long time.

Try to learn from your mistakes this round, so when you do land the next job you are better able to handle what is going to be thrown at you.

There is a saying that if your plate is full, get a bigger plate!

Good luck with the job search. Sure you will land on your feet in no time since you have 15 years in the industry

So very sorry to hear about your news. Take a few big deep breaths and just know that you are NOT alone by any means.:hug::hug:

I also welcome you to the club, I hope it won't be for too long ;)

I agree. You were loyal to them for 13 years and they were not loyal to you. You have my express permission to be really angry for a few days...maybe jog or hit the treadmill for a release....then of course, put it behind you and find something better. HUGS!

Just wanted to say, "I'm sorry this happened to you." Been there, done that, myself.

Do be as pro-active as possible about re-training and/or finding another job. Network, network, network.

Good luck!
