On my way out tonight , just around the corner from my house...he ran in front of my car and I hit the brakes but I guess just not enough...:(

I keep thinking about the poor little guy...I feel so bad.

Aww, I'm so sorry!!!!

I can understand what you're feeling. Where I live there are a lot of open fields and this happened to me a few months ago. I was in the slow lane and a bunny hopped out in front of me so I slowed down. Then it hopped back onto the side, so I sped back up. Then right when I was getting closer to it, about to pass it, the bunny bolted out in front of my car and I heard a thud :( I felt so bad.

I know how you feel. It's hard to get over.

I'm so sorry. I understand how you feel. A large bird flew into my windshield on Sunday. I felt horrible, even though there was nothing I could have done differently.

Once about 10 years ago I was driving home at night and it was hit the rabbit on the road or the 18 wheeler coming towards me. Afterwards, I stopped the car and took a look at the rabbit fearing it was still alive and would need help...It was dead. I returned to the car and cried for about 30 minutes.

The next day my Mom asked why I was lae for curfew...I started to cry and told her about the bunny...She says only I would need 30 minutes to cry over an animal that I could not do anything about...but she said she beleived me because I have always been that sensitive and kind and she does not know where I get it from because she's a cool customer...

Seing your post and knowing you feel bad about it just proves that good people come to the DIS...I hope you are ok...Wish I had a pearl of wisdom that could help...

Off topic...Pryncess Chrysty...I love your tag that just says TAG...How cool...It's like Cher or Madonna...Just one word but very cool...

for your kind support.

I keep thinking if only I had left a minute earlier or later...one could drive themselves crazy!

I just hope it was instant and he didn't hurt. I cannot even go that same way today when I leave my house...take a longer route. Silly huh?:(

Oh, sometimes I hate cars.

I hit a squirrel once. :( I understand exactly how you feel.

Just remember it is not your fault. They are little animals and they move out into the road very fast. There was nothing you could do.

The bunny is in bunny heaven now, probably hopping around on a cloud eating all kinds of good carrots and grass.

I'm sorry.

I killed a bunny rabbit on Easter when I was in high school. I was going to pick up my brother from his girlfriends. She lived in a rural area. I was sick to my stomach for the rest of the night.

Hitting small animals with the car is something that I had to sort of get used to after moving to a rual area. It used to tear me up at first but now it's happened often enough that it just makes me sad for a few minutes but I don't feel like crying or anything. I had to dodge a huge (well she looked HUGE to me!) doe in the road last week. Came over the top of a hill and there she was. I slowed down quick and watched her run out of sight. I've had deer get all shook up and end up running into my stopped car before!

Two Times.

1St was when I had my "learner's permit" - maybe a hundred year ago and I was out driving on this hilly road with my dad. We were coming over the crest in the hill and I see a flock of starlings about 100 yard ahead of me . I let off the gas and applied the brakes a little. My dad yells at me and says "put you foot on the gas, birds aren't stupid they'll get up and fly away".
So I do.

We were picking feathers out of the grilll of that car for weeks. Feathers, guts, and , well .... body parts, all in the engine. So bad that my dad had to have it "steam cleaned".

I still slow down for birds in the road!

2nd time:

just a few years ago. My husband and I were in separate cars travelling along the same road. All the kids were with him.
This is a designated "scenic highway" 1 lane in each direction with no shoulder, lots of logging trucks, high speed- no margin for error.

A squirrel darts out into the road, changes his mind, is under my car and must have changed his mind again. Little thump. I feel sick to my stomach but cannot stop.

A few seconds later my cell phone rings. It is my husband from HIS cell phone. I can hear crying children.
He says;" OMG! did you see that poor little squirrel!!! Someone must have hit him but didn't kill him and he was out in the middle of the road having convusions.

I hung up on him and cried the rest of the way home. He didn't realize that it was ME who hit the little rascal. I never DID tell the kids.

I am sorry. But I am also glad that you are okay and that you didn't hurt another person or God forbid, a child.

I spend a lot of time in rural areas, because I fish and hunt a lot. That means I encounter a lot of small animals on the road. Even though I'm a guy and I hunt, it still upsets me.

Funny story. A cousin who lives "out in the country" was coming home one day during deer season. As he was driving down the red dirt road in East Texas he came around the corner and hit an eight point buck (deer). He stopped his car and got out to see if there was damage and about the deer. He thought it was dead and being deer season and all he would put it in the trunk and take it home with him. Well he still had a way to go to get home and when he got there and called his mother outside to show her the deer. When he opened the trunk he found out the deer was'nt dead and was'nt to happy about being hauled around in the trunk of his car. It jumped up started swing antlers and took off for the nearest woods. Scared the living daylights out of both of them.
