It's "graduation" from basic obedience next week and, while I love my dog Olive, she's a little "slow" shall we say;). We've been so busy working on the basics that I forgot she's supposed to get "extra credit" for showing off a trick she can do. So I need something REALLY simple (not sit/down/stay/ heel). Any ideas?

TIA!
Terri

How about "give me five" or teach her to dance (get on her back paws and walk in a circle)?

Does giving paw count?

My dog is so treat happy, he'll walk in front of you, sit down and slap you with his paw to try and get one.

Dancing might be a bit beyond her, giving paw is a possibility:).

Thanks!

Terri

I don't know if it would be considered a "trick" or not, but DD can have her dog lay down - with his paws straight out in front of him.. She can then lay a doggie treat right across his paws and he will not touch it until she tells him to..

He can also crawl on his belly (like a soldier would crawl through the woods), but you probably don't have enough time for that..

Good luck with whatever you try! :goodvibes

C. Ann, the first would be a "leave it" type command, and is REALLY useful for any dog to know (and shows great control, besides!). The crawl sounds cute, too...

Can you get her to jump through a hoop or over a stick? Start by laying it on the ground and leading her through it with a treat. Then, gradually raise it until she is jumping through.

I have a hula hoop in the garage, somewhere...

You could try to take the "speak" to "whisper".. DD has taught her dog to "whisper" so well that at times he whispers so low, you just see his cheeks puff out a bit.. It's a riot! :goodvibes

Speak was an easy one.

Hi-five wasn't too hard either. My dog is a treat junkie though and seems learn tricks quickly :) Good luck!

We've done obed. classes twice with one of our dogs, once with the other. We took the older dog to training when we were taking the new one, didn't want him to feel left out. :) Anyway, the first time we took Blue to class his new trick was "steady" but he wasn't that great at it, what we did was put a treat on his nose and say "steady" and he had to wait to eat it until we said "OK" and then he'd flip it up and eat the treat. :) The next time we used "high five" but he gets excited and just starts to jump so we had to do that one a couple of times. We did "dance" with the little dog for her new trick, but we rarely do it now because we don't want her to hurt herself, she's a mini Doxie, that was just the easiest trick DD9 could teach her. :)

How about "touch it"? My Newfie learned it after 3 tries. I held my hand palm up close to her nose with a treat next to my hand and when she touched her nose to it I said "Good touch it!" and gave her a treat.

No neat tricks to share, but just wanted to wish you good luck! My dog and I failed obedience school....needless to say my dh wasn't terribly suprised!

yes, bark and speak are two different tricks for our dogs.
