Ok, I have decided I will cancel my late September 2026 4-day cruise and will gamble on a restricted fare. I think the odds are far more in my favor for a cruise close to then or even that exact cruise getting a nice discount. I will rebook the hopefully discounted cruise, with my same Dreams agent and gamble on my room.

I don't know when I will cancel it because I will be uncomfortable having like three grand in Disney gift cards here in my house. I could hide them well, but what if my home were to catch fire? Any advice on that?

Just know that chances are good you won't get early dining. That may not be important to you.
Do you own a safe? We keep gift cards and spare credit cards, passports, birth certificates, etc. in our safe. It's not guaranteed to survive a fire but more likely than if those things were in my desk drawer.

Chances are, if your house burned down, there will 100 other sentimental things you would be far more devastated about losing than Disney gift cards. For me, photo albums from our wedding, video of our wedding which many of the guests are now gone, our children's childhood pics , pics of my own youth, videos of our kids as babies, an afghan my grandmother crocheted for me, a baby blanket that my great grandmother crocheted for me when I was born. A photo slide show I made for my dad for his 80th birthday of his whole lifestory in pics, that starts with my granparents on their honeymoon. He has more baby pics than my siblings and me combined. On and on...
With all the heartache over those lost things, I probably wouldn't give a squat about losing a Disney gc.

Is there a reason you want to cancel this far before the final payment date? If you keep the cruise, you can decide right before that date whether it still looks likely that it will be discounted, or whether room types have started selling out.

If you make an account on Disneygiftcard.com and register your gift cards on there, you can transfer balances from one card to another. I managed to bring the wrong card on vacation with me and was able to transfer online the balance to the physical card I had with me and could access the balance that way.

I have decided now that I will wait until the end of June to cancel, with a full explanation to my TA on what I am planning to do.

I use the gift card site for combining my cards, but I will not leave them on my account at all. But it is super useful to manage them.

How would I know if it might be likely or not to get the discount?

Go on an incognito browser and look at the cruise as if you are going to book it. See how many if any categories are in category guarantee, look at each cabin type to see what's showing, etc. That will give you an idea of how sold it is.

Oh, ok. I will do so later next year. I will play with other cruises beforehand and figure it out.
