I have a plan!!

For the last 9 months I have been impatiently counting down to my holiday in Orlando with my niece, best friend and her son. I thought I had covered everything, but no - how remiss of me, I forgot to cover SNOW, that blasted white stuff that totally freezes airports, well spineless airports anyway.

So this morning I came up with a contingency plan - I have booked one way tickets to Miami out of Heathrow. I still have my Virgin Gatwick flights booked but with the knock-on effect expected to last well into next week I just didn't want to take any chances of being bumped.

Of course if it snows and closes Heathrow as well then - pardon my French - but I am well and truly stuffed.

Who needs insurance with a plan like that? The weather is supposed to ease up now into the next week. I know the forecast changes from one hour to the next, but it does offer some hope.

well done tina sounds like a good plan to me! I am keeping everything crossed that those few degrees up on Saturday get it melted at gatwick. trying not to panic about a week from now but the nerves are setting in. and if I could afford to do what you did then I would in a heartbeat.

I'm not trying to scare you, but you do know if you miss an outbound flight (so your flight to Orlando) airlines cancel your return journey, don't you? I'm not sure if the same rule happens if your flight is pushed back a couple of days and so you do your own thing in the meantime, but it may be worth finding out. Just in case you do use the Heathrow tickets, but were planning on using your original booking to get home on.

I don't know what their policy is for getting people out who's flights have been cancelled. Do they bump people off to accomodate the ones who have already been delayed or do they just fit the people from cancelled flights onto planes where they have spaces? Anybody know?

Phew! Just thought it was worth mentioning!

I was just saying on another thread that two Christmasses ago all the flights to Las Vegas were delayed a few days due to the first snow fall in Vegas in 40 years. We were on the first flight that flew out from London after the airport reopened (we were on our scheduled flight, luckily). So just going by my experience, anyone booked onto a flight that flew at the correct time / day (such as us) were kept on it - they filled up spare seats with people who had been delayed, and I believe the next day put on an extra flight to catch up. I suspect they weren't going to risk upsetting another flight full of people by delaying them, when they already had several days worth of upset people to deal with. It was easier to get us out on time and carry on sorting the already delayed people as and when they could! So as long as flights are going by the day you are due to fly you should be fine
