I Have A Firey Hatred For Heelys

I don't agree with tripping a kid or any of that but I wonder how many people would do that for real?

I don't think I would have the courage to do it, but the idea does give me a sort of perverse pleasure when I think about it. I would much rather watch them fall down and get hurt on their own, as then I can feel a sense of justice without risking lawsuit.

Well, they do. They are very good skaters and they are very good at maneuvering on skates.

That is akin to saying they can do no wrong? :confused3

Ya know what, don't answer that. I really don't care what you have to say. I'm not about to nitpick this issue to death. Me and my Heely loving kids are gonna bow out of this one for now. Have fun. :)

 The crowd will turn on you in a heartbeat around here! I gather that flip answers, especially if they say something good about our kids are a no no right now! At least if you do it!:upsidedow

My kids don't have a clue about heelys. Which is just as well. They have a tendency to want to push their limits. Someone would probably break an arm, or something!

I think posting here about them is preaching to the choir. At least to anyone who would actually respond.

I don't see what the controversy is about. Most people seem to agree that they are inappropriate in crowded public areas. I don't agree with tripping a kid or any of that but I wonder how many people would do that for real?

It's the DISboards...we can disagree over whether newly fallen snow is white, a sunny sky blue... ;)

And, for the record, I haven't bought my 7yo Heelys even though he has asked for them. He's a limit pusher and I know it. He's improved and maybe he can have them someday, but not quite yet. And no, I wouldn't let him wear them in crowded places. And if he went barreling towards someone wearing them, he'd deserve to be at least blocked from hurting the other person. :rolleyes1 I'd do the same thing if someone was coming towards my child or my elderly mother wearing them. Doesn't mean that I'd trip someone skating by with them (thoughts are fine, actions are not).

I'm shocked that you would think I mean anything but we would all 3 be heelying together! probably holding each other up for support! What else could i possibly mean? :confused3:
I just don't think they come in my size.(10 womens)

I thought that's what you meant!

After I trip the demon children I will beat them up, too. ;) (joke)

I don't think we need to turn the whole world into a skating rink (the idea sounds kind of cool, though! There's a WPASADI challenge for ya!) - but I'm not eager to knock kids down.

I'll knock T&B over, though. ;) (another joke - so witty this a.m.)

I don't get the debate. To me, it's obvious that people should not be skating in public places. But it's also obvious that heelys are just that....skates. Why hate Heelys? Why not hate when people use Heelys inappropriately?

Do I hate fire? No. Do I hate arsonists? Yep. (I'm the queen of the exaggerated metaphore :rotfl: )

My son is getting them, but he'll only use them in places where he could normally skate. (Duh.) The wheels come out, so they are regular sneakers at any other time.

I simply don't get the big deal?

agreed !!!!:) - and I think most people here are really saying what you are - it isn't the heelys. it is the people using them

it SHOULD be obvious - but sadly to many it is not...

I agree: they should be used with the wheels in as you would skates - and only as sneakers any where else...but, the problem is: too many people lack this kind of common sense and consideration for others...and this is quickly becoming a problem in many public places - and therefore the bad feelings.... They have become a true annoyance and need to be banned in public places because far too many parents refuse to acknowledge that they are no different from skates, and are allowing their kids to use them in the wrong situations.

If everyone felt the way you do - and controlled their kids there wouldn't be a problem!

I am continuously amazed by what gets heated on the DIS. I would think it would be common courtesy, and therefore common sense, that heely wearing inside and at crowded public places is a no-no. :confused3

I am not a fan of the things. I think it's bad for developing leg muscles and I see kids wheel on them more often in places where they shouldn't than places where they should.

You crack me up... :rotfl2:

Based on what I have witnessed, the issue with these is magnified by when most kids decide to use them. They are not using them to get around like roller blades, they are using them to roll down hills, usually in crowded places. Hills like the ramps older and disabled people use to get around malls and theme parks.

The recent incident was boy deciding to roll down a hill in the World Showcase at full speed. His mistake was thinking everybody would move for him. After he ran into somebody that refused to move it took awhile for his parents to come from wherever they were to help their bloody child. :sad2:

We just got back from WDW and OMG, the place was full of 'em. Miniture idiots on wheels with their adoring, but clueless parents in tow.:sad2: I stopped counting how many under-12's cut in front of DS's wheelchair. But I did have to smirk a little when not one, but TWO kids did a face plant simultaneously in front of Chefs de France while skating on their Heelies in the dark. Must have found the same cobblestone. :rolleyes1 Idiot parents.

Me too, but I wanted to clarify and make sure that I wasn't getting myself into something that I couldn't handle... ;) :rotfl:
I'm quite sure that you could handle just about anything! Especially with Missy1961 and I around! Also, if Cool-Beans knocks you down, we'll be there yo help you back up!(mind you, this is after we've picked ourselves up!)

Yes, we're all in this together!

I'm fairly certain that I'd be holding onto the railings, so no worry about C-B knocking me down since I would hardly be moving. :rotfl:

Didn't read all 12 pages - are we having a contest for the most inappropriate place for heelys?

....in a church, on carpet, in a crowd - then climbing steps.....

My DS has them and he has never ran into anyone or knocked anyone down. It's a shame that the ones that do ruin it for everyone. SO some of you would knock a kid down even if they weren't bothering you or coming at you? I don't agree with how some kids use them but there are many kids out there that use them the right way.

Honestly, I would use a defensive position for ANYONE at ANYTIME heading towards me in an unsafe manner where I may get hurt. I am just not able to get out of the way quickly enough.

If someone gets knocked down--so be it, but I do my best to make sure it is not me.

I do this with my kids, other peoples kids, adults--anybody.

My body cannot handle falling down. I have prior injuries that do get aggravated from a knock down. And especially now that I am pregnant, my reflexes are not as fast--and I certainly can't play "dodge human".

I think most of these "knock downs" are people who would react DEFENSIVELY if someone were coming towards them--and I do not blame them in the least.

If you don't wish your child to be knocked down--teach them to not barge at people--or to keep certain activities to areas suitable to those activities.

:confused3

Well, you quoted me questioning the person who said they would walk into the path of a kid wearing Heelys, apparently because the kid was so dangerous. To me it seems a lot more dangerous to cause an accident than avoid one, but hey, maybe that is just me. Other posters have gleefully said they want to stick out their foot and trip kids on Heelys, or secretly want them to fall. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Seems to me these are not people who really care that much about dangerous situations if they are going out of their way to cause a dangerous situation or imagining what fun it would be to see one happen.

It depends on the circumstance.

Driving a car on an interstated...I "found" the drive shaft of a garbage truck. Cars were at speed and I was boxed in--the car in front of me swerved aroudn the bouncing heavy hunk of metal. Now commons sense dictates that when a vehicle swerves or does something eratic, you don't arbitrarily copy them--but you assess the situation and do what you can for what they may have swerved around. I had to drive directly over this hunk of metal--it ripped the clutch out of my car.

Had I tried to "avoid" that accident...I likely would have flipped my car, spun my car, met a few other cars.....

So it isn't always so cut and dried to avoid an accident rather than participate in one.

Just like the poster who got in front of her mother to prevent her mother from being involved in a heely hit....she put herself and the child at risk....but the risk was less than if she just waited for her mother to scoot out of her way on her own only 10 short weeks after knee replacement.
