I HATE Heelys

*IF* he ran into you (which he wouldn't) then there would be something to talk about.

Can I get that in writing with a signature? popcorn::

My Mom bought DS some. I have no problem with them. He hardly even wears them now, he has had them for about 2 months.

I have never had someone even come close to running into me with them on or seen anyone knock something over in a store. I actually have not seen that many people wearing them anywhere.

BTW, if you felt the need to stick your foot out in front of my son, I would feel the need to stick my fist in your face! *IF* he ran into you (which he wouldn't) then there would be something to talk about.

But why would you even consider letting your child use them in an inappropriate place like a confined and crowded store? Outside where there is room sure, but indoors? Plus there is just no way that you could guarantee that your child wouldn't run into someone. Things happen. But I do agree that no adult should try and injure a child by tripping them, and I think that suggestion was made in jest, but no parent should just let their child run wild either. (Not saying that you do that but some parents do.)

Last week I was at Six Flags Great America (which by the way, I HATED!), and there was a girl about 12 years old zooming through the park on her Heelys. It had been drizzling and the pavement was pretty wet.

Well, I was siting on a bench waiting for my kids to get off a ride, so I was watching her cut people off and try to get in line before anyone else. She hit a particularly wet spot and went flying! She fell flat on her back and banged her head really hard on the pavement. The worst part of all was that when she fell her legs went up in the air and she accidentally kicked a toddler in a stroller in the face who just happened to be strolling by with his family. :sad2: . The poor baby's mouth was all bloody and he was screaming hysterically. The baby's parents went nuts and started screaming at the girl who was already crying because she was hurt.

The whole thing was totally avoidable. The heelys have no business being in such a crowded public place.

I'm sure that girl's mother would have said her daughter would not run into someone too. The point is, you never know, accidents do happen.

I'm in agreement, they sure are annoying. I wonder how those kids will walk when they get older. Every time I see a kid try to walk in those they have to walk on their tip toes to avoid rolling.

Thats what I was thinking too. Everytime I see a kid try walking in these, they have to walk on their toes. I know a little girl who naturally walks on her toes. Her parents are doing everything they can to teach her to walk properly. Heelys can't be good for such young kids.

Fortunately I haven't seen them around here much. Yes, I have seen kids using them, but not as much as some of you have. Hopefully their popularity is dying out.

Does anyone else remember the Friends episode where Chandler had to come up with a marketing ad for sneakers with wheels on them? Everytime I see these shoes, I think of Chandler trying them on and falling.

Personally I have no problem with heelys but thats because I am 6'1" tall and weigh about 270, and most of the kids that wear them are pretty small. I have been run into at least a dozen times in Home Depot, Wal Mart and other stores. The only problem I have is dealing with the parents who run up to their child after he has bounced off me and landed on his butt. They immdiatley think I did something to cause the fall. Well I guess I did, I stood there while the kid came shooting around the corner on those things and watched him bounce off me to the floor. The best one was when I was standing at the end of an aisle in a Wal Mart Super store grocery shopping. I was looking at a display and the kid came flying around the corner hit me bounced off and straight into the display of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Boxes went everywhere and every one in the store turn to see what was happening. The kids mother ran up to him and said are you okay ,what happened? The kid said I pushed him down and with that the mother went into high gear. Yelling and screaming about how rude I was and I would be responsible for his injuries etc. About then an Assistant Manager walked up and said to the lady, no mame your son ran into this man and if he uses the skates in the store again you and your son will be asked to leave. That shut her up pretty fast.

So I say let your kids have heelys and let them use them anywhere they want, just be ready for the big guy waiting around the corner, physics dictate he's going to win every time.

:rolleyes: :rolleyes1 popcorn:: :drinking1

I'll take that guarantee in writing - make sure it's notorized.

By the way I haven't had anyone with them on run into me yet. One kid did run into my shopping cart pretty hard - it was worth a chuckle.

If some kid is heading toward me out of control on those things, I wouldn't stick my foot out, but I sure as heck am going to react defensively. In a way that will minimize the impact to me and probably end up with the kid on the ground. Sorry, but your kid doesn't get to batter me just because they're a kid.

Put me in the "don't like them" category. They're dangerous & annoying. Plus, the kids get no exercise when using them. :sad2:

Luvs Tink, perhaps your son uses them responsibly. However, the majority of the kids wearing these things are tearing up and down aisles in supermarkets, malls, Target, WalMart, etc. I got knocked into at Costco last week-no apology.

My store has tile floors. We tell the kids (that may come in with their parents) no Heelys, yet one young lady continued to tear around our (rather busy) kitchen wheeling on the darn things. She ran over another patron's foot, drawing blood. Fortunately, her mom walked right up to her and demanded the wheels out of the things-but the damage to another person was done.

As I've said, my son is not getting them. I just don't see where he'll have opportunity to use them in an appropriate manner. I am not budging on that.

The more stories I read about these shoes, the more thankful I am that my kids have never wanted a pair---my oldest proclaimed them as "stupid & lame". And I'm sure that'll set at least one person off on here who is pro-Heely, so I'll just go to my corner & don the flamesuit now. Anyone willing to hose me off if necessary? :lmao:

:thumbsup2 Firehose at the Ready!

My two are grown & never asked for them, my sister's 2 boys had them & used them quite often & yes, even in WDW...

I never heard of them injuring anyone or getting into any real trouble because of them...

thankfully.

Brerrabbit, I like your take on physics :lmao:

Jeafl, that's really sad what happened by the girl at sixflags...:( I wonder if hers went in the trash as soon as *she* got home :confused3

Heelys have been around for at least 5 years now and I don't see them dying off any time soon. Kids outgrow them...then the next generation catches on, and so on and so on...

Parents have the absolute right to say no to heelys, as they do rollerblades & footbal teams and anything else they find unsafe or unsuitable for their children...that, my fellow DISers, is your God given right.

My kids are wearing them right now as we speak, on their way to a co-ed sleepover.

I think they're fine, but they should be used outdoors. They must not be very popular around here, because I have yet to see someone using them.

DH is 6'3" and weighs about 270 also. He is also the brick wall that your child ran into. He has had this happen more than once. He also had a child lie and say he pushed him down. Luckily there were witnesses that stuck up for him. I too will take up my defenses on this. I am not going to be the one to go down because of an out of control child. I would never push a child down but if I stand my ground chances are that the child is going to fall. Sorry about that.

Oh and to the parents that think they are ok in malls, stores and WDW. Karma is alive and well. Please come back and talk with us after you get knocked down by a Heely child and you are the one bleeding. Because chances are it is going to happen. Good luck. :thumbsup2

I was at the community pool the other day and a father walked in and set up his chair. 2 kids around 10ish were tailing behind doing their heely bit in the small, quiet parking lot. Kids come wheeling in, dad ears picked up sound, he spun around and in that strict dad voice - " You do NOT Heely in here!" They stopped on a dime! Gotta tell you I wanted to jump out and kiss that dad (didn't hurt that he looked and was built like Vin Diesel :lmao: ). I don't mind them with responsible parents. Unfortunately, not all parents are like him.

My DS has a pair of Heelys & hasn't hit anyone, but I watch him like a hawk. When these wear out, however, I won't be buying him a new pair. ;)
