I finally found a really reputable breeder of Chows. She is registered with the AKC and I found her through their site. She wanted 1500 for her puppies but told me if I didn't care about showing, she had a gorgeous girl she would let go for 600, because she had an overbite. We had been emailing back and forth since last week and the kids were over the moon with all the pictures, we had already counted on this being OUR puppy.

I go to send her the money today and - too bad, she is gone (keep in mind I told her yesterday, I was going to send the money today by paypal and everything was fine). I'm seriously in tears over this. We were so excited and now we are all just crushed. Why do that to someone? Why send these pictures and tell us we can have this dog and then the next day say "ooops, sorry, just sold it to someone else". I think I am done trying to get a dog, it is just too heartbreaking and frustrating.

that is a crappy thing and very unprofessional.

But don't give up,your puppy that was meant for you and your family is out there. It just may not come the way you think it will.

If you are not looking to show or breed you new family member, there are plenty of animals that need to be rescued & "foster" families that would be greatful to find a home for thier charges.

Yes, I know. We wanted a chow, a beautiful chow that showcases the breed. I would spay/neuter any puppy we get, but we wanted a chow that LOOKS like a chow, a little Martha Stewart looking baby. Yes, I guess that is selfish and too much to ask for on our parts, but that is what we wanted, and were willing to pay for it.

If this is how the breeder acted then I wouldn't trust the pups from her anyway! As hard as it sounds you probably got lucky :goodvibes

You might consider checking with your local kenel club or vets office for recommendations :wizard::wizard::wizard:

Just so you know AKC registered doesn't mean anything. Anyone breeder can sell "AKC registered" dogs whether or not they are actually a good breeder.

I actually found her off of the American Kennel Club webiste and she was heavily endorsed by them. I do believe she is reputable. Most of her Chows are grand champions and she very rarely sells to "pet" homes. I'm crushed, I really am.

look under pet finder and then chow chow. Lots of them are usually there.

My heart goes out to you because I have been owned by a chow at one time!! She has been gone now for a few years. They are unique dogs. Just think its better for her to dissapear now instead of dissapear AFTER you sent her the money.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

Have you personally met with this breeder or inspected their premises?

I'm no expert (having bought our 1st purebred pet through a breeder 5 yrs. ago) but our breeder invited us to their home to discuss the breed (and our understanding of the pros/cons) before any further discussion of purchase.

I'd be wary of any breeder that would transact a purchase merely through email (unless one were also a reputable breeder/show person).

Wew visited the breeded for our pedigree dog- we played with "Mom" and the 4 pups and chose one

But then, the best dog we ever had was a stray mutt(cocker- poo-ish) that wandered into our yard;)

From the Future Owners section of the AKC website:

"While the AKC does not endorse or recommend specific breeders, we do offer several resources to locate breeders."

It's actually really surprising that she so rarely sells to pet homes...I would think that it wouldn't be totally rare for her to get puppies that aren't "show quality" and would need to be sold to people who simply want pets.

And I totally get wanting a dog from a breeder. If we ever get a dog, we'll get one from a breeder...malamute, standard poodle or german shepard (if I've spelled the last one wrong, do forgive me...it's not me that is the GS lover in the family). We know the temperaments of the dogs we've grown up with, and it's what we want, and going that route helps to get us closer to that. The "mutts" we have personally known, except for one that DH knew, have been very unpredictable, and definitely NOT the best dogs we have had in our families (though one of the malamutes was a bit "off" as well, but my mom messed up and got him from a backyard breeder she didn't know all that well instead of the breeder she got her first two malamutes from, sigh).
