I had no idea carpet was this expensive!!!!!

I had no idea it would cost that much. I am in the process of watching my carpet get destroyed by a toddler and an infant. Puke, potty training accidents, and general wear and tear. When baby #2 is potty trained we'll be in teh market. Better start saving the pennies now!!!

We just replaced the carpet in our house we had a dealer find us seconds (there is a flaw in it somewhere but we dont see any!). I don't know if every dealer will do it but it was worth it! We replaced 760 sq feet for 1145.00 installed

When replacing carpet the pad is what is important. You are better off getting a high grade pad and a cheaper carpet than a low grade pad and expensive carpet. The pad is what really decides how quickly the carpet will wear out.

we also went to Lowe's and were very happy w/ the carpet. ( I think it came to $ 5200 total for the house). I think they're running a $ 94 install for the whole house and you can catch their carpet when it's on sale. Please ask though if there's been any complaints about the installers that they send you....we had a MAJOR problem w/ the installers and a 8 hour install turned into 3 weeks. ( UGH) But we finally got it all settled. I don't hold it against Lowe's at all because they did right by us in the end, but I would definately get some kind of feedback on anyone that's going to install in your house.... .

The prices for carpet sound about right but $1500 for install??? That's crazy. Our carpet store does install for free and includes the pad. You can take up your old carpet, it's very easy, just messy.

Definitely shop around...

If you're doing whole house, I would look into buying it directly from the mills. You ahve to find your own installer usually, but you can save a lot of money that way.

This is what my parents did, they knew of someone who installed on the side. So my Dad went and picked it up from I think the bus station and the man installed in on a Saturday with his son.

We are in the process of recarpeting the entire house. The sale price for a very good carpet was 32.00/square yard. Our carpet dealer is someone we've dealt with for years and trust. He warned us not to use too soft of a pad for the carpet because the carpet may end up stretching. He also told of he has had many cases where his measurements were for fewer less sq yards than the big box retailers had stated were needed. According to him, this practice is common. We bought a home with builders grade carpet and it is horrible! Spending the money on good carpet is well worth it in the long run.
