I had a job interview yesterday...UPDATE

Congratulations!!! Glad everything worked out.

You're on the opposite side of the fence as I am - I'm on the plaintiff's side of med mal.

UPDATE: I got the job!!:banana::banana: The starting salary is the same as I was making before my hours got cut, but I will have some commuting costs - $2/day in tolls and its about 17 miles from my house vs. a mile from my house and no tolls, but before my hours were cut I was working 40 hours a week for $X and the new job is 36 hours week for the same $X, so it looks like it will be a wash.[/QUOTE]

Congratulations! Best of luck in your new job.

How did your current boss take it? You can't beat the same money (your previous 40 hours) for less hours.

My current boss didn't take it too well. I'm the only one in the office that does my job, plus I do all the bookkeeping and account reconciliations. I did offer to come in some nights and weekends if he needed me to to train anybody he might hire. I never like to burn a bridge. I think he'll end up spreading my job out among the rest of his employees though. Maybe that will be enough to put them all back to full time work. He said last week when he cut hours that he didn't want to lay anyone off, so I guess I solved that problem for him.

He and I had a meeting yesterday about the fact that I interviewed for the position, so he knew I was looking. In that meeting other than his saying that he needed me and that my job wasn't in jeopardy, he wouldn't commit to giving me full time hours at any point in the future, nor would he commit to not cutting hours further. I pointed out that he had lost interest in the firm (at least from what I could see) and was directing his energies into his new venture, and that it looked to me like he was getting ready to think about retirement, none of which he disputed. To me the handwriting was on the wall and it was just a matter of time before I was eliminated anyway, its just on my timetable now and not his.

Thanks for the support everyone!

I gave a two week notice at my current job so I'll start the new one on 12/16. I'm really excited about it. I guess I've been in a bit of a rut where I am now as it wasn't as hard to give my notice as I thought it would be. I'll be working for an attorney who practices in a completely different area of the law than what I've been doing for the last 23 years and I can't wait to start! I've been doing divorce/family law and will now being doing medical malpractice from the insurance defense end.

I'm a firm believer in everything happens for a reason. If my hours hadn't been cut I most likely would have drifted on in my current position until I was laid off. I would never have seen the ad for the new job and would have missed out on a wonderful opportunity.

Congratulations!
When do you start the new job?

You're just using common sense. I think it was a generous idea to offer to help train someone else. You're doing what you have to do to take care of yourself. The fact that he didn't dispute the fact that he has other interests now and may be looking towards retirement speaks volumes.

As you said, maybe the others will go back to full time now. If they don't and still have to take up your work, he may have others looking for other employment as well.
