I got that dreaded phone call yesterday!

I am a huge advocate of always wearing seatbelts and no cell phone AT ALL (no talking, texting, bluetooth, etc..anything) while driving. I hear about people driving while on their cell phone and joking about how they dont notice things around them, etc and I swear I want to strangle them.

1 1/2 years ago when i was 19, I was T-Boned by some jerk on their cell phone while driving to school and it totaled my car and i dislocated my shoulder, had a collapsed lung, 4 broken ribs, a concusion, plus just a host of scrapes bruises, etc. I spent 10 days in the hospital (3 in ICU, 7 on med floor) and I spent a year in physical therapy for my shoulder and my knees (they got crushed by the dashboard).

I still have lingering effects from my disolcated shoulder becaus eof a pinched nerve and my knees are still not very strong.

The worst part is, a year and a half later, I still have problems driving because of anxiety. Ive been in therapy since about a month after the accident and while I can drive around our immediate area there are still days where I cannot drive the highway. I can still vividly remember seeing the car come at me knowing I was goign to get hit adn there was nothing I could do. I dont remember anything between getting hit and waking up in the ICU. But I was told many times that because of the type of impact (hit on the drivers side door...crushed in the door) if i had not been wearing my seatbelt it woul dhave killed me.

I'm so glad it is all working out for you. You have four lucky young men there!

I had helped raise my DB because my parents were very sickly. One morning, my friend came to get me at work and take me to the hospital because he was in an accident. He was on his way to high school his senior year and going across a train track with no crossing arms, lights, or signs with the sun in his face and never saw the train coming. By the time I got the hospital, he was gone. DM was in shock, DDad was just staring in space, and I was 5 months pregnant and bawling my eyes out. I can't say it's exactly the same as losing my child, but since I had almost raised him, it was close to being the same. I'm so glad none of the four families in your community had to go through that. The empty chair at graduation was bone chilling.

I'm so sorry your family had to go through that! Thanks for sharing that story!

 Makes me realize how much more damage could have been caused to this boy! Sorry to hear what you are going through!

We should definately preach seatbelts and no cell phones!!!

Forgive me for being curious, but what happened to the person who hit you? Did they also get injured; and did they/or their insurance pay all of your bills?

It might help the OP know what they are facing as far as bills and such.

I am so sorry and I hope that your doctors think this will eventually be fixed (the physical part) but the mental part...you just don't know. Just don't push yourself.

This is OP here and we have State Farm Insurance. They said they will pay for all the children's medical bills! We have good insurance and umbrella insurance. I hated writing that monthly check but now I'm so glad we did! I didn't realize that the driver is legally responsible for every person in the car! It makes you think every time you have a carpool full of kids!

She did not get injured from what I was told.

She got her liscense revoked ( I dont know for how long)

She and her insurance company had to pay all of the medical bills. We ere very close to having to go to court over that but the threat of court adn us suing her got her to pay very quickly. I think the bills in the past 1 /12 years have added up to over $350,000 and than we only got $9,000 from the insuranc ecompany for my car so we had to pay $8,000 OOP for a new car

Do you know how much her insurance paid vs how much the girl paid? $350,000 would bankrupt us many, many times over! State Farm told me I was insured up to 1 million since we had umbrella insurance. They are being wonderful and telling me not to worry but I still am!

I think her insurance paid what our insurance would have paid an dthan she paid what we would have had to pay OOP (before our deductable and OOP limit.....about $8,000) and than naything else that was not covered by our insurance (co-pays for specialists, some testing, etc)

Its different in different situations though from what the police told us. If she had not been speeding and on her cell phone our insurance probably woul dnot have pressed so hard to get it paid by her. Our insurance considered it negligent driving on her part whcih is different than just considering it an accident from what we were told.

It also depends on your insurance company, your policy, exactly what happened, etc. Each company adn each policy has different rules. I dont think she had umbrella insurance btu i dont know for sure. If your umbrella insurance is up to 1 million dollars, you should be absolutely fine.
