I am trying to make some decisions regarding the house that my dad owned in VT and it's upkeep until I move there in approx. 3 yrs. There is a HUGE maple tree quite close to the house and garage. It is over 50 yrs old and very tall. I worry that it will get hit by lightning, or split on its own from disease, etc. I have an estimate to cut it down. I wonder if anyone can tell me if it is a good deal. $2600. That will entail bringing in a bucket truck and removal of all debris except the stump which will be extra. The guy is insured.
Does it sound good?

That's on the high side for where we live (Western PA).

I would call around and get 2-3 more estimates before making a decision.

I just got three estimates for tree removal here in Wisconsin. They are three weeping willows, quite tall and diseased. We are going with the trim and clean up for $800.00

To totally remove the three trees we were quoted 2500.00

Had a single very large tree removed last year for $2500. Sounds about right.

That seems high. I just had a moderately large maple and six other smaller maples removed for $1,600. We got a really good deal because it was before the beginning of landscaping season, but I still think your quote seems high.

Sounds SUPER expensive where I live.... BTW I had 6 trees removed for $800 about 4 years ago.... I also had quotes of $2500 and EVERYBODY was insured. Check around.

We had a guy that worked for the city but did some side jobs, not sure we how we got his name and number. We had a pine tree that was about 30ft he cut it down for $250 and then we had the stump ground down for $150 again, someone else that was a city worker and did side jobs. Maybe you could call your city and check if there is anyone that does side jobs.

ETA: It was during the off season.

Seem about right to me. Do get a few more quotes and ask for a copy of their insurance. The close location to the home means they have to take the tree down in pieces.

Can i ask where in VT? my DBF works for a tree company thats worldwide. The reason it's expensive- is due to the proximity of the house/garage. I'm going to guess they are going to bucket/rope each and every piece down. Basically this means they will have to cut it into managable pieces and lower it down.(not just the tree- but the bucket with the piece of tree in it...takes time.....Also- if you can tell me what company, if it's local to me I can offer some advice- When I worked for the town, we had 8 150ft pine tree's taken down, so I had dealings with quite a few tree companies here. DBF's company doesnt do private work- only for power companies- so I'm not trying to get the info for him etc.. just trying to help you out.

The company I ended up using for the pines- was $1600.00 per day- one tree or 8 tree's- thats what it broke down too...

added****** DBF just said- 2600 for a maple thats 60 years old isnt bad- he guesses that it's probably diseased and the tree company realized this- could end up being a messy take down****

DBF has worked with trees for the last 10 years if thats any consolation...

i wish he'd shut up- he also said to check the insurance- could be minimal- just so he can say he has it...he said- dont do it unless the guy has $1 million of insurance.

I had a guy take down a huge oak (and 2 small pines) next to our house last year and it cost me $1,400 and that included grinding the stumps. The oak was 20 feet from the house. He was a climber so he cut it in pieces and lowered each section to the ground. It was a 2 man job.
