Congratulations!! You have every cause to be proud of yourself. I am sure your family is so proud! :thumbsup2 :cool1: :cloud9:

We have 10 Valedictorians this year, but unfortunately the district has either already changed the policy for next year's incoming Senior class as to becoming a Valedictorian or they changed it for the incoming Freshmen class. Either way the change in the system now makes it so that the person with the highest GPA will now be Valedictorian. The system that is in place now says you must take all honors, take at least two AP classes, and have a 4.7 GPA. I find so many things sad with what they are doing. We have the IB program at our school and many of my friends went that route and are also Valedictorian. That program is so rigorous and difficult and I believe if they are going to work so hard they shouldn't be taking extra classes through virtual high school or what have you to bump somebody out so they can maintain their dream of Valedictorian. :scared: What is even worse is that people who are going for Valedictorian will be dropping out of the amazing music programs at our school so they can get a higher gpa taking an AP or IB class. To me that would be the deal breaker. Music classes were something I lived for because they taught so much more then music and I just think it is a sad day when kids are going to have to choose between playing in the band or orchestra and pursuing academic dreams.

I forgot to add... Good for your son wanting to take Theatre II, classes like that are what make us all better people. Learning to work with people and becoming close to people through something you all love to do is such an amazing thing. Fine arts are just as important as any other class offered. They truly teach so much more then just the skill of theatre or singing or music; they teach valuable life lessons.

Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. :goodvibes I am actually all signed up to start my major in Elementary Education in the fall and I am very excited about it!

I thought that's the way it was everywhere? I've never heard of having more than one. :confused3 At my DD's school there is one Valedictorian, one Salutatorian which were the #1 and #2 in the school. The top 10% were recognized as Honor Students and wore black robes instead of the blue ones that the rest of the school wear.

But Congrats again!! :goodvibes

Congrats on being a valedictorian - it doesn't matter how many there are - she set her goal and acheived it - good for you girl!!! Good luck in college. You sound so excited to get started on your major. That is cool

Attagirl!!!!!!!

CONGRATS and yay for proving the negative Nellies all wrong!

And I agree with you. There should be a level for Valedictorian and not just the top person EXACTLY for the reasons you mentioned. The top person may just be thehighest ranked, but they sure as heck won't be able to use a hammer and nail or know or appreciate art or music.

Congrats on your awesome accomplishment!:cool1:

That's not necessarily true. The girl who was valedictorian in our town last year is an incredible french horn player and she also plays the bells in church. In addition, she volunteers for Habitat for Humanity so I'm guessing she can use a hammer.

Congratulations coolshannie, you should be very proud!

You're exactly right about the jockeying for position it requires to get #1. I'm very happy that our school dropped it and went to the levels, but there's still jockeying b/c all top kids know how everyone is ranked. I encouraged my oldest son to broaden his education with electives. With block scheduling, our students have 32 classes -- that's a lot. He took two art classes, two theatre classes and two vocational classes in the drafting department. He was good enough at the drafting that he competed in contests and made it to the state level! I think those electives made him a BETTER college applicant than all honors classes would have.

Much luck to you and congratulations.

never say never can do to someone.
Only our dreams limit us.
Best wishes as you start your life and don't stop dreaming and set the dreams as high as you would like to soar. :wizard:

I have had 3 major career changes and went back to college at 50 years old, graduating in the top 1%. So I am still dreaming as my children and grandchildren watch me!

You go gal.:thumbsup2
