I feel so special

We got a Christmas card from some folks we go to church with. Our address was printed on a sticker and affixed to the envelope. At first I thought it was a card from a business, perhaps my insurance broker.

Maybe one day I too will have so many friends I'll have to keep a database and do a mail merge at Christmas.

 perhaps they have some kind of disability? My aunt always had to have hers typed as she had a stroke and couldn't hold a pencil. How about looking at the postitive in the spirit of giving?

We use address stickers. We keep the addresses on our computer. Before we get the cards ready, we go through the list and make any needed corrections, etc. I would much rather spend my time writing a note on the inside of the card than writing out all the addresses.

I know some people that do this because they have bad handwriting. Also, it is quicker than addressing by hand. Time is an issue for some people.
Was the card handwritten-maybe that would make you feel better.

Hmmm...or perhaps they could be like my mother who has a hard time writing but still wants to keep in touch with her friends.

I just finished typing and printing her address labels and a generic note with a short message to insert into each of her Christmas cards.

I keep a label spreadsheet with everyone's addresses. We send between 80-100 cards out each holiday season. People move and it allows me to update their address as soon as I get a "we're moving" email. DH and I work full-time and have 3, 2 year olds - time is very scarce and I would rather spend an extra 30 minutes playing with my kids than writing out envelopes.

I've used labels for the past several years now. I really don't care too much about it for Christmas cards. My wedding invitations where hand addressed, cuz that was something one-time, very special. But like someone else said, I keep a database with all the lables and then I can update any time of the year. I would imagine there are a lot of people who do this now...

No, you shouldn't feel (even sarcastically) "special." Just condescending and judgmental. :sad2: Jeesh.

We do this. We send over 100 cards each year. It's important to us to send them and, realistically, this is the only way that's going to happen.

Whatever happened to "it's the thought that counts"? These people thought of you. They sent you a card. You're criticizing the way they did that? Wow.:sad1: Just wow.

It doesn't bother me in the least to receive a Christmas card with a typed / labeled address, and I do calligraphy by hand as a side business, lol!

Whether it's because of difficulty writing or simply convenience, it's still nice to know that someone included us in their holiday greetings.

What number of people constitutes the need for a database? I'm not cracking on anyone; I just can't imagine mailing out that many Christmas cards.

We use labels for the 120 cards we send out. I buy the kids matching shirts every year, take the picture (not easy with 5 kids), get the pictures printed, buy the actual cards, insert all of the pics into the cards, handwrite a little note and sign everyone's names to the 120 cards, put them in envelopes, add label, return address label, and stamp, seal, and bring to the post office. Christmas cards take me many, many hours as it is - I do not feel guilty using address labels, which make it easy to keep my addresses up-to-date, and add new families to my list.

I'm getting responses from those who use labels, and that's fair enough. But frankly, I'm not sure these people did think of us, and that's the point of this post. There wasn't a single hand written word on or in this card.

Seriously, if this is all you have to be upset about I think you ought to be really really happy that your life is so easy and pleasant. Come on....

We also send out around 110 cards....and we DO NOT send cards to anyone we see more than twice a year....no cards to neighbors, friends at church, co-workers. We are transplants to Texas, so all of our relatives live out of state; we send to college friends, former neighbors who have moved away, former co-workers. I spend a lot of time on the cards, picture, etc., but hand addressing cards is not an effecient use of my time.

Fair enough comment....I call those the "untouched by human hands" cards.

What I don't like are cards that just have a signature (hand written or stamped.) I know I should be happy that they sent me a greeting, but we never ever see many of those people...when I get a card from a long-ago friend with only a signature, all I know about them is that they aren't dead. I know many people hate "brag letters", but I'd love to know what is going on with lots of these people.

They did think of you at least once because they added you to their database. I think you need to focus your irritation elsewhere.

They thought enough of you to enter your name into their label database. This requires movement and dexterity of the hands, much like handwriting.

Get into the 21st century. It is not like they picked up a spam address list and sent cards to everybody on the list. They chose to PUT you on their Christmas list, therefore they cared enough about your relationship to send a card.

Perhaps you should peruse the recent threads about the rise of self-absorption and entitlement.

If you define your Holiday Cheer over a lable rather than the thought that went behind the lable, you need to go pour yourself another eggnog. :sad2:

Just curious -

How many cards have you sent out so far this year?

Who cares??? It's not like the computer randomly generated a bunch of names and they send Christmas cards to those people. They did think of you. They decided to give you a Christmas card.

I handwrite my addresses because I never really thought about using labels but I can tell you it takes a looooonnnnng time. I think we sent out about 60-70 this year. I guess people would consider it really bad etiquette that we put our wedding thank yous in with the cards for the people who gave us gifts to save on postage.

I'm sorry but I'm having a hard time picturing this. They didn't sign the cards?
