I feel like the people on the budget board can understand where I'm coming from with this post.

My daughter has worked really hard and will be graduating pharmacy school on Saturday. She's already had job offers and accepted a job.

She, unlike her dear mother ;), has a weakness for expensive purses and designer clothes (which she generally buys on clearance or at outlets). She's had her eye on a Kate Spade purse that was $500 but is on clearance on the KS site for a little over $200. She would never tell me that she wanted that, but I found out accidentally.

I just ordered it, and it will be here in time for graduation. I cannot believe that I paid over $200 for a purse! :faint:

Now I know that there are lots of people on the DIS who would laugh at me ;), but I think $30 is a lot for a purse! :rotfl2:

Knowing how much she's going to enjoy it is helping me get through it, but I don't know if it will do it for her dad! :lmao: :rotfl::laughing:

I don't "get" expensive purses either, but A) you got it for 60% off...always a good thing and B) your daughter worked hard and deserves such a gift.

Look at it this way, if you were going to spend about $200 on a graduation gift anyway, what difference does it make if it's a purse or a camera or a monogramed pharmacy lab coat or just $200 in cash? You're spending (I assume) within in your budget and your deserving daughter will get a gift she loves. And that is all that matters! :)

Congrats! You must be very proud!

I spent $150 on a Disney D & B purse a few months ago. I've been eyeing it for months and when it went on sale, plus 25% off, plus free shipping I took the plunge. I don't regret it. The most I've ever spent was $40.

Your daughter has made a huge accomplishment! I think $200 is a totally reasonable budget friendly gift for your child who just received her doctorate. Why spend that $200 on flowers or some other trinket when you can give her something she really wants and can use. Kudos to you for getting an incredible deal!

Believe it or not, I understand. But look at it this way, I've had to attend RUSH concerts because my husband LOVES that band and I can't stand them. You do what you do for the ones you love.

And no laughs from me. $200 is a lot for a purse. But it is a Kate Spade! They do hold their value unlike some Coach or Dooney bags. Good choice.

That's what I kept telling myself!

I think that purse is adorable! :lovestruc

I guess that's it in a nut shell. I keep thinking over $200 for a purse, but you're right, she's going to be thrilled!

ETA: Her dad's going to say "you paid how much for a PURSE?", but then he's going to say, "well, if you think that's what she really wants, that's fine". Daddy's little girl, you know! ;)

Your daughter will love your gift so that alone makes it worth the price... :goodvibes

and honestly, for anyone who is a "purse" person, $200 is not a lot of money... as a person who really appreciates a nice handbag, I would easily pay that and more for something I really liked :thumbsup2

Ah, I'd think nothing of paying that for a purse if it is really one that I wanted. The most I have ever spent was $175 for a Coach at the outlet and there was an additional discount that brought it down to that much. The original price was $498.

My DH has a fit everytime I buy a new purse, but as my mom always said, I work and pay for them myself, he has no reason to complain. Before she passed away, she would tell me to tell DH that she bought it for me.

I don't buy expensive shoes and I buy clothes on sale, so if I want to spend $100 on a purse, I'm darn sure going to do it. We don't have children, and I don't complain when DH buys endless amounts of CD's and DVD's.

You're daughter only graduates from Pharmacy school once, she deserves something special and especially if it is something she is going to enjoy as much as that purse. One day she will have children and won't be able to spend that much, she should enjoy as long as she can.

Thanks, y'all are making me feel a little less crazy! :rotfl2:

Handbag Lady, thanks to your advice, I got enough from the Campbell's Soup dress to cover the cost of the purse so I'm really coming out of this very well now that I think about it! :thumbsup2

I don't purchase expensive purses either. Considering it's a graduation gift for your hard working daughter though, it's money well spent! She's going to be so thrilled! :goodvibes

BTW, what's a campbell soup dress?

Many, many years ago (the 60's!), Campbell's Soup did some kind of marketing thing for paper dresses. You can see a picture of one here - http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...a=X&ei=upLJTY7lMsaftgf3n5DhBw&ved=0CBsQ9QEwAA

Somehow I wound up with one way back when I was a kid, and it had been in my drawer for years (a little worse for the wear from being folded up, I'm afraid). While watching American Pickers one night, my husband and I were discussing wishing we had something old like that to sell, and then I remembered the dress. It had some holes/tears (several) and some discoloration. Plus, it had 5 cents written on the tag from where I think I bought it at a yard sale as a kid.

After coming on here and asking for help, Handbag Lady gave me some good suggestions that led me in the right direction for finding buyers. The offers were pretty much the same so I think I probably got what it was worth, but if it had been in good shape, it could have been worth thousands!

I guess I feel better about buying a purse than I would a paper dress for the same amount! :rotfl2:

You know you just spent a small fortune on a bag made in China or Indonesia?? I just called Kate Spade in NY and asked the rep where the leather bags were manufactured, and said 9 out of 10 are made in China and the other 1% is Indonesia. He also told me that is the way of the world and everything is made in China these days. I called this number 866-999-kate. Evidently her entire line is made there. Nonetheless it is still a nice thought and congratulations to the graduate, pharmacy school is tough!

Tell me you didn't just call Kate Spade from Germany for the sole reason of getting to make some internet poster feel like crap over her daughter's graduation present.

(typed on my Dell computer, probably manufactured in China)

I thought the same thing... some people have too much time on their hands. :sad2:

Count me in as another person who thinks designer purses are a total waste of money.

But she's accomplished something really major and it's a gift that she will love. If you would have spent that much on something else, what does it matter that it isn't something you yourself would value?

Congrats to your family! That's awesome.

Yeah, I did know. It actually listed that on the page with the purse. They didn't attempt to hide that fact.

Thank you! :worship:

Congrats to your DD on her graduation. And as one of the PP said you were probably gonna spend that much on a gift for her anyway.:confused3 And hey, if she really appreciates it she can show her thanks to you by treating her DM to an extravagant gift later on when the big bucks come pouring in from her education.:cloud9:

Really? :confused3 Nothing on TV tonight in Germany?

If the OPs daughter wanted the bag, who cares where it is made? The OP found a good price, stayed within her budget, and is giving her daughter a well-deserved gift that she will love.

It must be really hard to make something negative out of that - you must be tired after all that hard work! :rotfl2:

It's a big deal in your daughter's life and she deserves it! You also deserve to get her something she will love!!! Don't give it another thought.

Wow! This ^^ falls under the category of..."If you can't something nice, don't say anything at all."

OP, congrats to your daughter. Finishing Pharmacy school is quite an accomplishment! You must be very proud. How nice that you bought her something that she will love to reward her for all her hard work!

Thank you all!

You're right, I would have spent that much on something, and I can honestly say that I'm positive there's nothing else she would rather have. She'll have that and a small family dinner out somewhere afterwards so we really aren't splurging too much, I don't think. ;)

We've teased her and her husband that we don't really think it's fair that we raised her and put all that time and energy into her just for the two of THEM to reap the rewards! :rotfl2: (J/K, BTW)
