I feel like I've officially lost my mind!

I feel like the people on the budget board can understand where I'm coming from with this post.

My daughter has worked really hard and will be graduating pharmacy school on Saturday. She's already had job offers and accepted a job.

She, unlike her dear mother ;), has a weakness for expensive purses and designer clothes (which she generally buys on clearance or at outlets). She's had her eye on a Kate Spade purse that was $500 but is on clearance on the KS site for a little over $200. She would never tell me that she wanted that, but I found out accidentally.

I just ordered it, and it will be here in time for graduation. I cannot believe that I paid over $200 for a purse! :faint:

Now I know that there are lots of people on the DIS who would laugh at me ;), but I think $30 is a lot for a purse! :rotfl2:

Knowing how much she's going to enjoy it is helping me get through it, but I don't know if it will do it for her dad! :lmao: :rotfl::laughing:

I'm so much like your daughter when it comes down to spending a lot of $$$ on purses. I have to admit they are my weakness and the first place I visit when I walk into the store. So, I don't think you've lost your mind at all :rotfl:. I think you made a great choice by getting her that for graduation.

Thank you! :)

I'm all tomboy and always have been so we're different in many ways (both animal crazy though). She's heels and grace (but with the force of will to manage any horse that wants to get onery with her!).

I think what you did was so sweet. It is especially considerate because you really were thinking of her when you picked out her gift. My mom and I have opposite taste, so it is always extra special when she gets something that I'd like. No matter where it was made. ;)

Don't think about how much you spent. Think about how much you saved. :cool1:

My mother doesn't get it either. The differences in our ways of thinking comes up fairly regularly, and we'll never convert the other's way of thinking. I work in a profession where physical appearance and dress counts for a lot, she never has.

Think about how when your daughter goes to job interviews, a little token of your love is going to be in her hand. :goodvibes

Congrats on your daughter's graduation and new job. That is so exciting!

My daughter just finished her freshman year of college. When she started last fall she wanted the Longchamps large tote to carry her books around. Since she normally doesn't ask for much I agreed to buy her one. $145 plus tax at Nordstrom. She loves it and it makes her happy so it was worth every penny to me.

Now me, I would prefer the Kate Spade bag. I am sure your daughter will love it and it is a constant reminder to her of how much you love her.

I'm a tomboy too! And I am not a purse person. In fact my purse is actually a small backpack!:rotfl: However, you did the right thing by getting your daughter something she will love. Too often we think about ourselves rather than the person we are giving the gift to. So kudos on your great deal and congrats to your daughter for finishing up college!:thumbsup2

Congrats to you & your DD!! What a great accomplishment! I totally get your train of thought on purses though. I struggled yesterday whether to buy a NWT bag that was $8 at our local Goodwill. :rotfl: It met my criteria though so I broke down & paid.

I think if you were going to spend that much anyway, it makes more sense to buy her something you know she will love, rather than spend it on something that seems more practical to you but she won't love as much. Nice job! I bet she will be so thrilled when she gets it!

When I graduated from undergrad 12 years ago my then boyfriend's mother bought me a brown Kate Spade tote that I coveted for months. Then boyfriend is long gone, but I still have the tote and when I use it and see it I still think of how thoughtful it was that she went out of her way to get me somthing that was way beyond what I would have spent on myself at the time.

I'm sure your daughter is going to LOVE it and the thoughtfulness that is behind the gift.

Thank you all!

You're right, I would have spent that much on something, and I can honestly say that I'm positive there's nothing else she would rather have. She'll have that and a small family dinner out somewhere afterwards so we really aren't splurging too much, I don't think. ;)

We've teased her and her husband that we don't really think it's fair that we raised her and put all that time and energy into her just for the two of THEM to reap the rewards! :rotfl2: (J/K, BTW)

:lmao:, Don't worry Mom, she'll be paying you back in no time:rotfl:

i think its worth every penny. someone is going to faint but my first designer purse was an LV that i had been wanting for months. my mother made me wait until i was 18 to have something that expensive. boy was it an investment. i still have it years later:lovestruc and the price spiked from $175 to the current price of $360.

she will be soooo excited and happy. it is also an investment in her career depending on where she is going. people will hate to hear this but sometimes one or two nice designer pieces add a certain polish you just can't get otherwise. congrats on her graduation and don't think twice about the money you spent. :goodvibes

Very good point! And Kate Spade has free shipping so that was a LOT cheaper than going to China to get it!

You're right about the difference in professions. I work in schools and can wear khakis, capris, etc., but she'll need higher end "classy" clothes in some situations.

When she was getting ready to purchase an interview suit, I encouraged her in purchasing a "very" nice suit (her husband had to swallow a little bit when he realized how much it would probably cost ;)). Fortunately, she found a great sale at Ann Taylor and was able to get something great for less than $250. This purse will go great with the suit. :cool1:

You were probably wise with your choice too. I know when DD was a sophomore she wanted a specific backpack (maybe North Face?). That backpack carried her through with the rest of school. It was some of the best money I ever spent (only around $80 or $90, but it seemed like a lot for a backpack at the time).

I'm really not "cheap", I just try to be very cost efficient! ;)

Okay, this is sooo me! :lmao:

Awww, that's nice! :goodvibes

Good choice! I love Kate Spade. I had a friend who had a Kate Spade tote, but had no idea that it was a designer bag. :lmao: She became a little paranoid when she found out how much it was worth.

No, I did not call from Germany to make a poster feel bad, as I am not responsible for someone's else's feelings, they are. I checked out their website and fell in love with the Mott Street Riley bag, it is 425.00 alot of money, I called the 1800 number and asked where the bag was made. The rep told me everything is made in China and a small number of goods were made in Indonesia. Sorry, but I do not spend large amounts of money for bags made in China, to me it is a cost vs. worth issue, basic economics. So for all those that felt the need to attack me, you can all go to...anyway, since I am currently in contract negiotations for a job in Shanghai, China, I will be on the lookout for handbags and shoes, and will have a better idea of quality control when I arrive in July!

I think it's a lovely gift for your daughter, sometimes we should think with our heart and not our head.

Hope your daughter enjoys her special present.

You know you just spent a small fortune on a bag made in China or Indonesia?? I just called Kate Spade in NY and asked the rep where the leather bags were manufactured, and said 9 out of 10 are made in China and the other 1% is Indonesia. He also told me that is the way of the world and everything is made in China these days. I called this number 866-999-kate. Evidently her entire line is made there. Nonetheless it is still a nice thought and congratulations to the graduate, pharmacy school is tough!

Nothing like raining on the OP's parade! Ugh, some people aggravate the heck out of me.

Her daughter is graduating from an extremely hard program and you are chastising her for buying a graduation gift because it was made in another country. Does this REALLY upset you or are you just being your usual snarky self? :sad2:

I think it's a wonderful thing for
1. because it's something that will surprise her daughter with something that she really wants and
2. because the OP is thinking more about what her daughter wants than herself on this special occasion. The look on her daughter's face will be something that will help her get over the fact that her bag was made in China!:rolleyes1

Really! I mean REALLY!

Regardless of whether the bag was made in China or even....Germany, I think that you bought your daughter a lovely gift. It's what she wanted! She deserves something that she wants after working so hard.

I think it was a lovely, sweet thing to do. Your daughter is going to absolutely love it, and it will be even more special to her because she knows that you went out of your way to get her something SHE really wanted! Congrats to her!

Just checked, and it is scheduled for delivery today! She is going to be so excited. :yay:

Honestly, I am glad that you are gifting her with the bag of her dreams. I only pointed out what you already knew. This is a budget board and sometime cost and worth are two very different things. I reported 5 posts as flammatory, when I was only voicing my 2 Euro cents. Once again, CONGRATULATIONS to the pharmacy grad, that is a tough program. I should know my sister is the CEO of 5 medical colleges and she told me that this is a difficult as med school. All the best!

Really ? You have been around since 2007 on the Dis and you consider what the pps said to be inflammatory ? You must not leave the budget board much , because that was nothing : ) . Shoot, first thing that came to mind about your post was that you were a "Debbie Downer ", we all know how people feel about her lol.

Congrats to your DD, OP and to you and your DH! I know you must be very proud ! Come back and let us know how she reacts !!! Just to let you know since you aren't a purse girl, you will see her lovingly staring at the purse frequently for the next few weeks LOL.
