Welcome.

We are just back from our Family's first trip to Disney. My last trip was when I was 9, 21 years ago, so needless to say this is also my first trip report. My goal here is to document our trip primarily for my on recollection later, but I also hope it can be as helpful to others planning trips as the various trip reports I've read over the last 18 month have be for us. That's right folks I said I've been planning for 18 months, not because I needed that long or because we needed to save, the reality is that we had planned to go to Disney in the early spring of this year, but had one major hiccup what lead to the postponement of this trip to Sept 26th - October 4th.

Cast:
p1054979172-4.jpg

Me: 30 y/o, Born and raised in NC and now living in Concord, NC a suburb of Charlotte. I'm the planner, the photographer, the guy who was more excited about this trip than my kids. I'm a Purchasing Manager for a manufacturing company with a background in Research and Engineering. My life outside of work revolves around my girls (wife & two daughters). I'm the details guy, the guy who read the unofficial guide almost cover to cover, has memberships at disboards, touringplans, tourguidemike and ride max, and who realized that most of that stuff is totally overrated when traveling in late September.

DW: 31 y/o, Also born and rased in NC. Stay at home Mom who has a very part time career as a pharmacist. She is awesome at both of her jobs. Was worried that I would over plan which would hinder the fun and freedom of the trip. Made a comment half way in that this was the best vacation of her life. Made one of the best planning decisions of our trip by directing that a Family Suite as ASMu was her preference over a standard room at Coronado Springs. Two rooms vs. One.... Great Call.

DD5: AKA: Ariel. 43.75 inches tall. Just started kindergarten. Loves all rides, well unless they involve getting wet when wearing clothes. Loves all characters. Is very self aware and assertive. She is learning to try new foods, but apparently not this trip. Has been ready for this trip since she was 3.

p140550310-4.jpg

DD3: AKA Dora. 38.5 inch tall. Also loves all rides without exception, problem being she is just a little to short. Very stubborn, but can also be easy going. Very picky eater, we are luckly she did not starve while we were a way from home; she basically lived off of French fries and desert. Focused on characters. This is interesting because it relates to why we postponed the trip from early spring. You see, DD3 developed a fear of the Chick-fil-a Cow last fall. We thought it would pass, but it only got worse. We decided to postpone the trip after an encounter with said cow which resulted in a 30 minute fit. There was no way we were going to spend the money on a trip where we had to avoid all the characters. To be sure she was ready for the fall we bought season tickets to Carowinds, a local theme park, and slowly introduced her to characters there. We made a wise decision, as first her reaction was manic fear. Even if the character was far away, but within eye sight she would clinch up ang grab on to ether DW or me and cry/scream until the character was no longer visible. After showing her that she was in control, she slowly warmed. On our 4th trip she gave Dora and Boots a "5" while being held and on or 5th visit she got down and gave them hugs. After this milestone she became to polar opposite and would run to hug and kiss any character. Her confidence and affection were slightly rattled while at Disney, but I'll get into that later.

The Plan:
9/26: Drive down from NC Prelude
9/27: Animal Kingdom and Dinner at Chef Mickey Part 1 - Part 2
9/28: CRT Breakfast, Magic Kingdom and Dinner at Whispering Canyon Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Dreams Parade - Part 4 - Part 5 - Part 6
9/29: Epcot and Dinner at Le Ceiler
9/30: Magic Kingdom and Dinner at Ohana
10/1: Disney Hollywood Studios and Dinner at 50's Prime Time
10/2: Princess Storybook Breakfast, Epcot and MNSSHP
10/3: Open Park Day
10/4: Crystal Palace Breakfast, Magic Kingdom and return home

The Package:
Originally we did not plan to hop and had an 8 day base ticket with dining in a Family Suite at ASMu for about $3350. Fortunately I was able to take advantage of the late Disney Visa free dining offer, we had split our reservation which gave us an extra 1 day ticket which we ended up using as a pseudo hopper. I know in a sense that its not cost effective to do this, but it required no additional cash out of pocket and meet our hopping needs. Cost of the modified package $2995.

So there you have it the background of this trip, which I suppose amounts to a pre-trip report. I hope you stick around to check out the report itself. You should expect to see a lot of detail of not only the what and when of our trip but the why as well. Also there will be lots of pictures. I took almost 4000 pictures over the course of our 8 days, this does not include the nearly 700 additional pictures taken by the photopass folks.

BTW the pictures of my girls above are from the day before our trip when they recieved a "package from Mickey and Minne" to prepare them for our trip.

Until then...

Great start!!! I really need to do a TR too...we just went on our 2nd WDW trip in Sept...your family is beautiful! Can't wait to read more...I'm in!:thumbsup2

First let me say thank for all the complements.

Prelude - The Long Drive and Gas Shortage

Friday, September 26, Day 0

Today was departure day and we a luck would have there was a gas shortage throughout the Charlotte area. Most stations had no gas and the few that did had long lines. Our trip was 560 miles, and our Expedition had enough gas for about 370. I figure we'd take our chances and find gas in SC.

Ariel is in Kindergarten and when to school as normal this morning, Dora stayed home with DW and finished packing. Dora also received a call from Mickey an Enchanted Call reward from all the Disney movies we have be buying. My plan was to go into work, leave around 11am, spend no more than 15 minutes packing the car and pick up Ariel from school by noon. At 9:30 my boss came in my office an asked why I was working. I told him I had a couple of things to finish up and was planning on only taking 1/2 a day off. At 10, he came back in my office and told me to go home, what ever I was working on could wait. I have a cool boss. He had given each of my DD's $60 in Disney Dollars the week before.

I got home by 10:30, finished packing and we picked up Ariel from school at 11:30. Finding gas along the way was no problem, though we must have stopped 5 times for potty breaks, so I had plenty of opportunities to fill-up.

We arrived at All Star Music after 10, both kids were sleeping so I checked us in and unloaded our stuff with bell services. By the time we parked the car, got the sleeping kids transferred to strollers and got up to our room, bell services had all ready dropped of our bags.

We had requested the Calypso building, and were granted our request. Better yet we had a 3rd floor room on the back of the building and on wing closest to the Lobby/Food Court/Buses.

I got the pull outs, pulled out while DW did some unpacking and the kids blew through the excitement of finally being at Disney. After 10 minutes of buzzing around the room and watching the Top 7, they were ready to return to their slumber. We put them to bed and retire to our room.

Immediately I realized that my DW's suggestion that a Family Suite in a Value resort was more valuable than a room in a Moderate was 100% correct. My only concern was that the door out of the room was in the living area and that we really would be sequestered in the bedroom while the kids slept. Low and behold we have an openable window in the bedroom. This became our access to the outside world during the trip. (Please note outside world equals trips to the food court for usage of the ever popular refillable mug.) After one of such trips, we spent a couple minutes preparing our day bags for tomorrow.

DW's bag contained snacks, extra shoes and socks for the girls, small flashlights, glow sticks, and various sanitizing products. My bag is well my camera bag. It contained my Cannon XSi, a 17-55mm lens a 28-135mm lens, all our money including a roll of uncirculated pre-1982 pennies, a roll of quarters, and my touring plans, maps cheat sheets, ect.

We were ready, ready for tomorrow and the Animal Kingdom...
Day1: Animal Kingdom

Day 1: Disney's Animal Kingdom

Our wake-up call was set for 7:15. The plan was to depart by 8:30, driving ourselves and making rope drop. Both girls woke up about 6:30. They wanted cereal, which we brought, and milk, which we needed. So we all headed over to Maestro Mickey's for a 1/2 gallon of Milk. We came back with Re-fillable mug for both girls, 2 lanyards, and KTTW holders, and a 1/2 gallon of milk. Ariel and Dora found stuffed animals they wanted, but we insisted they wait. Ariel really wanted a baby Simba wrapped in a leaf, we told her we could get it for her later. Every souvenir shop we stopped at throughout the day, she tried to buy the baby Simba. Our rule, and we stuck to it, was no souvenirs until were on our way out of the park. We just did not want to have to carry and keep up with stuffed animals everyday.

After breakfast in or room, we headed over to AK and made it in time for rope drop. We tried to take some pictures of the girls and of our family but learned very quickly that early morning family portraits weren't going to happen. The girls just had to much excitement to stand still and/or corporate. We did manage to get one picture of them in front of the welcome sign.

p615560892-4.jpg

After the rope drop ceremony, which was a bit overrate, we headed into the oasis and Dora heard the call of nature (very timely potty break). Ariel and I looked at the Spoon Billed Rosetta's while we waited for DW and Dora to return

p267406504-2.jpg

We took our time in the oasis for multiple reasons, (a) it was supposed to be a slow day, (b) we thought this would be a 1/2 day park, and (c) we wanted to let the girls set the pace.

p511426641-4.jpg

p104302367-2.jpg

We strollered up for the trek to Africa and Kilimanjaro Safaris, It was 9:15 and the posted wait time was 20 minutes. I thought it would be better to Fasspass, walk the Pangani Forest Trail and come back. Looking back I'm not sure this was the right decision, although it probably didn't hurt us. I will say the girls probably enjoyed the Forest Trail more than the Safari. We saw lots of animals on both, but the Safari seem rushed and did not live up to my expectations. I also want to make note that we often visit the NC Zoo which has a great Savanna area and Ariel was a bit scared of the Crocs.

It was about 10:15 when we finished the Safaris, I felt like the day was moving by faster than I expected. Both Ariel and Dora wanted to meet characters so we located the strollers and headed for Camp Minnie Mickey. On the way we saw Baloo and King Louie so we stopped to meet them. While in line we saw De'Vine.

We continued on our journey to Camp Minnie Mickey, where we met all of the Fab 5 except Pluto and then had a surprise encounter with Koda from Brother Bear.

After the character meeting we went to Festival of the Lion and sat in the Elephant Section. I got cold chills at the entrance, and the girls liked the show especially the tumble monkey's

After FOTLK we were ready for lunch. We almost decided to see Pocahontas, but decided against it. On the way to Flame Tree BBQ, Ariel and Dora spotted Lilo and Stitch. I got in line with them while DW ran into the closest shop to grab Autograph books. You see Disney is smart. Both our girl notice the characters giving autographs at Camp Minnie Mickey and they wanted to get autographs too. We obliged.

p698892234-3.jpg

p829772705-4.jpg

We were the last family to get to see Lilo that day as she had to go to school. Lilo pitched a little fit, stomping her feet and crossing her arms, which our girls thought was hysterical.

Flame tree was a good choice. I had the ribs and chicken w/ frozen lemonade, DW had chicken and triple choc cake, Ariel had the drum stick, and Dora had peanut butter crackers from home. We all had fries. As an FYI - I did not take pictures of food. After Lunch we headed over to Dinoland and caught the 1:45 Nemo the musical just before is started. Dora got scared during the shark seen so I took her our. I was a little disappointed because I was really liking the show. We just meandered around until DW and Ariel finished the Nemo Musical.

Next we headed into Dinoland, rode triceratops spin and then played at the Boneyard and Digsite. The kids really enjoyed this and it rejuvenated their energy level. The Digsite is very impressive, its shaded, has misting fans, and the sand like material is a crushed rock that plays like dry sand, but does not stay wet, and is not difficult to brush off sweaty sink or out of shoes. Very well done.

Day 1: AK (Part 2)

Can't wait to read about your trip. You have a beautiful family.

Great report, looking forward to more! We have reserved in an All Star Music Family Suite for our January trip! Our travel party also includes our two girls, ages 3 & 6! Thanks for sharing your trip with us.:goodvibes

After the play time we had some ice cream, as we were heading toward finding a parade spot. On our way we decided to stop at Character Landing for fun with Pooh Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger. Tigger was the star and we had a great time with him. He dance with Dora and got down on the floor to sign Ariel book.

We left Pooh and the gang at 3:55 and hope we can find a decent spot on the parade route. It turned out not to be very crowded so we got a spot ate the exit of It Tough to be a Bug. While we waited Ariel and Dora played with one of the Disney Cast Members. This Cast Member not only played ball with the girls, she also gave each of them their first pin. This is where Ariel's obsession with pin trading was started. Again I say... Disney is very smart. This parade is very fun and only ranks behind Block Party Bash in terms of interactions. We had a blast.

It was almost 4:30, so we decided it was now time to leave AK, first we had to stop and get Ariel her baby Simba, Dora decided to get one too. We used their Disney Dollars. Each had a budget of $100 plus some money from DW Parents and another $100 each of stuff we decided to buy them that we wanted them to have.

Our first park day was finished but our day was long from over. We drove back to ASMu for a short rest and then headed to the Contemporary for dinner at Chef Mickey's. The buffet was good, especially the desert bay. I was a little disheartened that we were spending +$20 for Dora to eat saltine crackers and ice cream, but we were on vacation so oh well. The character interaction was great. and we got to see each of the fab five twice. We also had the best family picture of the week taken by the photopass at the entrance; yes we paid for the package, smart Disney.

After dinner we looked around the gift shops at the Contemporary and surprisingly left each with no merchandise. We finished the day with a ride around the MK loop of the Monorail.

p857584350-4.jpg

After the Monorail we were off to ASMu and to bed as we have an early call on Day 2 for our first day at MK and breakfast at Cinderella’s Royal Table.

Daily Review
There was a lot we did not get to today that I hoped we would. We missed Discovery Island and the Tree of Life. We decided against Its tough to be a Bug due to the ages of our kids and the desire not to start a bad association with 3D movies. We never made it to Asia for the Jungle Trek which was on our list. We had no plans to get wet on Kail and neither of the kids are tall enough to ride EE and DW does not like big coasters. I had picked this park for our first day because I thought if we did it later in the trip the glory of MK would have hurt the experience. I was right. This is a full day park for us, but it does not deserve a return visit during a single trip. I think the Boneyard and the Parade were the highlight of this day, but ranked against the other 7 days of our trip from a park perspective this day ranks last. As far a Chef Mickey's, this was one of the top 3 meals of the week.

Coming up next
Stay tuned for our first day at MK, breakfast at Cinderella’s Royal Table and dinner at Whispering Canyon.

Day 2: Magic Kingdom (Part 1)

Enjoying your TR. My DH grew up in Huntersville, NC. We stayed at ASMu same time as you.

Your pics are great! Love the one of Tigger dancing with Dora.

Looking forward to more.:)

Loving your TR!! It's really great to see a guy get as excited about Disney as us!

Can't wait to read the rest, i am taking my 2 1/2 yr old in 9 more days. she loves to see pics of kids with the charac. hope she will not be afraid..;)

Your day at AK looked like so much fun! Chef Mickey's is one of our favorites! As far as paying....did I catch that right??...you didn't do Free Dining or the dining plan??:confused3

So I'm going to answer some of the questions...

Sunnyday: I told ya'll I was more excited about this trip than my kids. I love to watch my girls have fun, I enjoy their joy. My wife tought I was nuts when she asked what I wanted to do for fathers day and said I wanted to take the kids to Carowinds.

Soinlove: I hope your 2 1/2 year old is not scared. Dora was really bad 6 months ago and I can imagine this trip being fun if we had not been able tame her fear. Since your trip is so close, I'd just suggest taking the introduction to characters very slow. Make sure your daughter knows she is in control, (i.e. only go as close as she is willing to go)

Blessed wth Triplets: Yes we were on the dining plan, but still had to us a TS credit for Dora. It was more the principle of the the thing. We paid for the dining plan for 2 day and had 6 day of the dining plan free as part of the Disney Visa offer that started 9/28.

I glad you all are enjoying the TR. I hope to have day 2 uploaded by tomorrow

hey! um....ya got a brother?? I know all about being more excited than your kids! When we arrived in the Magic Kingdom the first day, I yelled, "there it is, there's the castle!" and started jumping up and down.

Looking forward to the rest of the TR. I can relate on the whole postponement. My youngest is 7 and we were suppose to be there for his 5th birthday but he developed a fear of mascot type characters and I knew he would not have a great time so I waited on him to be ready. Now we are finally going the first week of November and I am super excited.

Day 2: Magic Kingdom, Breakfast at CRT and Dinner at WCC (Part 1)

Sure our trip started yesterday, but Day 2 was our first MK day and really the day we were most excited about. We were excited to see the castle, ride the rides, have breakfast with Cinderella; we were excited to ride the bus for the first time. This was the day our trip to Disney really began.

We got to the bus stop about 6:45, caught the bus around 7 and arrived at MK at 7:20. We were looking forward to getting in the park early, as our reservation was for 8:05 and the park did not open until 9.

p854294793-4.jpg

We were one of the first in the park and after about 10 families came though the train station they raised a rope. There was also a rope at the entrance to Main Street. The park was not quite ready for us. This was actually perfect for me as I wanted to get a couple of pictures of a deserted Main Street and Castle.

p853498027-4.jpg

We figured we had a couple of minutes until the rope would drop at Main Street so we dashed over to Town Hall for our first visit pins. We got them quickly and were back at the rope before what would become a dash up Main Street.

p743988955-4.jpg

This mad dash by Ariel and Dora was for no reason other than pure excitement and I can’t say I blame them. I would have run too, if I was not dragging a stroller with one hand while trying to take pictures with the other. I guess we all have our priorities.

Despite our experience from yesterday with the morning picture at AK, I decided to press my luck to get a picture of the girls in front the Castle. My attempt failed, but I did get a good one of the Castle itself. I found over the course of the trip that this Castle was always ready for a picture, no matter the distance or the angle; it always stood still and greeted my camera with a majestic smile. The same could not be said for the girls.

p995866399-5.jpg

Breakfast at Cinderella's Royal Table started with a short encounter with Cinderella. Both girls, but especially Dora, were completely overwhelmed. I’m not sure Dora even took her eyes of Cinderella the whole time.

p598425994-4.jpg

p624318289-4.jpg

p1003670610-4.jpg

After a couple of photos with Cinderella we were directed up the spiral staircase into the restaurant, where we had a window table with a view of Fantasyland. On the way up Dora could not help but stop to see Cinderella again. I think she thought this was her only chance to visit with her new favorite princess. During breakfast Snow White, Belle, Aurora and Jasmine came around to the tables for pictures, autographs, and hugs. At the end of breakfast we had the wishing star ceremony, which our girls loved. Dora got some special attention from Jasmine, so I’m not sure she made a wish, but I am sure she got her share of pixie dust. (Lots of pictures coming)

This by far was the best meal in terms of character interaction. As far as the food my DW thought the pastries and potatoes were good and the kids liked the French toast sticks. I thought the food was fair. I preferred the breakfast food at Princess Storybook and Crystal Palace.

It was 8:50 when we finished breakfast, enough time to prepare for our race to Dumbo. After a potty stop for the girls we found a spot on the rope and waited.
