I don't need to commit to dates ahead of time at DL, right?

I mean, unlike WDW where I have to know at least 60 days ahead for FP, I don't need to do that at DL, right? We are driving route 66 and we PLAN to arrive in Anaheim on Sunday night and be in the parks Monday and Tuesday but that's not set in stone. Driving 2200 miles, literally anything could happen and affect our plan.

But it shouldn't matter, right? Even MaxPass is day by day, not in advance? I hope I'm understanding this all correctly.

We keep playing with our driving plan and coming up with different options. Not sure which way it'll all fall.

Thanks!

MaxPass and playing it by ear are fine for any random visit. If you have your heart set on a particular dining reservation, you need to make that ahead of time.

DLR accepts dining reservations 60-days in advance, but you can often find pretty prime dining choices pretty close to the trip. Chancing a "walk up" is a little more dicey; unlike WDW, DLR restaurants do often accept walk-ups, just the wait can be pretty lengthy (>45 minutes). If you know you want to eat at a specific location, I would go ahead and make a reservation. Otherwise, there are also a lot of good CS location at DLR.

In terms of MP/FP, that is correct. You buy it day-by-day and you cannot pre-book any FPs (unlike WDW).

The park hours aren't even published until 6 weeks in advance, so there is little to commit to (besides dining reservations) before then. At six weeks out, you might make decisions about which parks to visit at certain times to catch a show or avoid a refurbishment, but the level of commitment to those decisions is up to you.

Dining and hotel reservations are best made in advance, but just make sure you understand the cancellation policy of both so you can make changes as you get closer. If neither one of those is a concern for you, then just show up whenever it works for you and have a great time!

Most dining reservations can be made day of, the exceptions are:
  • Blue Bayou
  • Lamplight Lounge
  • Carthay Circle
  • Dining Packages
Otherwise, you should be good to go.

Even lamplight, lounge has walk ups and it is very possible to get a table here. My daughter went opening weekend and after trying to get a reservation for weeks she tried walking up to get in and no problem at all. It's not like BOG or CRT where if you don't book six months out your out of luck. You should be fine with most last minute decisions at DL.
