Sierra,

I see alot of myself at your age in your posts. I am having to struggle now because of mistakes that I made back then. Now that I am really trying, people are noticing that I am really having trouble, rather then just being subborn.

Had people noticed that I needed help back then, I might have gotten better grades, to allow me to go to college a whole lot
sooner.

Work hard now, so you can reach your dreams later. If you are having trouble with anything, ask for help. As Bob would say, "They can't hitcha." If your teachers won't help, ask someone else.

Also, it is important to rem remember that the DISboards are public.

I hated questions like that too. Not because I didn't think they should be asked but partially because I had awful English teachers (I'm sorry if your teaching shakespere from the cliff notes and won't even think about the argument your students are giving you about why they disagree with the cliff notes your a bad English teacher).

But even more so it was because I hate questions that can be kind of right. Ones that are so subjective like that and even the teacher can't be sure that the author really thought any of that stuff etc.

I like math questions where 5*Y = Z and Y+ 2 = Z means that Y is .5 and Z is 2.5 and it can NEVER EVER be anything else. I like science questions where they ask what happens if you drop a ball and how fast will it go because that is something you can think about because you probably dropped a ball before and know your close. I hate essays and thinks that the teacher could grade better or worse based on their mood.

I know those things I hated were important to learn. But I still hated them. So I became an Engineer. Our documents can be as dry and repetetive as can be they just need to be precise. Our calculations are right or wrong. We have alternatives and may disagree on which ones are best but even then your not debating feelings your debating cost and effort or accuracy.

This is why I like math. The correct answer is the correct answer; it's either right or wrong and nothing fuzzy in between.

When writers write, they often put the actual meaning between the lines. You have to look deeper with some of them.

If all you want to read are romance novels and popular fiction, you are all set.

But if you want to read the best of what there is, you have to be a little smarter than average. They're trying to help you get that little bit smarter so that you can (if you want to) explore that world of literature.

IMO, it is worth the effort.

The term,"Harpies," in line 15 of "Old Ironsides" is an allusion to predatory flying creatures in Greek mythology, which have bodies of vultures and heads of women. The name meant "snatchers" or "robbers." Why do you think that Holmes uses this allusion in his poem?

And why exactly do the terms "vultures", "women", "predatory", "snatchers" and "robbers" go together? Is anyone else having a problem with this? :rotfl:

Are we related? :thumbsup2

The one thing I hated more than English/Language Arts class was an English teacher who couldn't speak proper English! I couldn't even focus on what she was trying to teach because I was so irked with the "I seen" and "mines."

I am an English teacher and I would have a fit if I heard a colleague of mine speak like this! The few bad teachers give the rest of us a bad name. How could anyone teach English if he/she can't SPEAK English?

I will concede that I always alternate the antiquated "curriculum" with some modern pieces to keep student interest. OP, you're not the first person to be put off by some "Old Ironsides". However, the poem did help save the USS Constitution from being destroyed. "Harpies" = an allusion to the would-be scrappers.

As far as the sexist nature of "harpies," I learned that pretty much all of ancient Latin and Greek literature and mythology is sexist!
