I rarely vent about my Dh because well, he's darn well near annoyingly perfect. ;) BUT...

He has really bad reflux. Goes to doc. Doc gives him a prescription, and tells him he should really cut out the Diet Coke as he believes it's one of the causes. DH comes home and tells me all this, and says he hopes the medicine and the changes help.

This was my week to go to the grocery. I go; based on above conversation, I do not buy Diet Coke. I come home.

DH unloads the car, looks around, and says, "Well, now I have to run down to the convenience store and get Diet Coke!"

I look at him and repeat conversation in paragraph 2 verbatim. He looks at me and says, "But I never told you not to buy it!!"

:confused3 :confused3

I can totally understand his unwillness to give up the coke. Maybe a slow shut down will be better for him

I would guess the doc said it because of the caffeine. He could try caffeine free diet coke. If the doc didn't say exactly he could ask, but that's usually the reason.

Duck makes sense. Maybe you can ask the Dr if he can try caffeine free?

Soooooo did you get him anything else as a substitute? Diet Rite, Sprite, bottled water....beer? :confused3

Actually a friend of mine had this issue. It wasn't the caffeine as much as it was the ASPERTAME in it. He won't touch anything diet now. He mostly avoids all cokes all together now. Diet stuff is not good for people at all.

I've been on meds for a few years now. Diet drinks do nothing to me, but caffeine rips me up. I know a few people like that. It might be a thing where everyone is different. I also know someone who couldn't handle anything carbonated. It's the kind of thing that once you're on the pills they're very effective. Since you're going to be on them for a while usually I always recommend to people to try to see what does and doesn't cause the problems. Often docs will speak in absolutes...don't do ANY of these things that cause problems with anyone, and you'll be fine. But that will leave you with a very bland diet, and you could be avoiding a bunch of stuff that isn't doing anything to you.

My guess is, you dh is hoping that the meds and other changes will help- and that he can keep the diet coke. I know that would be the angle I would try if it was me. lol

I was just recently diagnosed with reflux. My doctor told me that soda should be fine as long as it's not caffeinated. Some people can handle it, others can't. I can only handle it in small doses. It's not fun, I was a HUGE soda drinker. I put myself on a very bland diet with my medication until most symptoms were gone. Now I'm re-introducing all foods and drinks to see what affects me. Everyone is different. He has to try things to see what bothers him the most.

:rotfl: Oh, Mal, your DH is a man after my own heart. With all the meds I am on at the moment, I refuse to give up my Diet Coke.

I'm not sure that caffeine is the problem in the soda. Usually a GERD diet will just list soda as a problem food. Most sodas (especially Coke-type sodas) are very acidic. Any acid is bad. I have reflux and do fine with soda. In fact, I think the fizz provides relief.

As to the reflux meds--I have been on them since 1998 and want to get off. I know that people take them long term, but I just don't believe that they should be used that way. Now I am dealing with HORRIBLE Nexium rebound effects. Not pretty. Bottom line, try to find diet modifications to handle GERD. The medications are a wonderful way to heal the damage but then they allow people to continue with their bad habits. I recently read that only about 1 out of every 100 people on reflux meds truly need to be on them.

If you don't mind my asking, what are the "Nexium rebound effects"?

Well, when you take Nexium, the drug turns off your proton pump (which is the third line acid producer in the stomach). When you reduce the acid in your stomach, it sends a signal to produce more acid (but the Nexium doesn't allow). This raises your serum gastrin level. So, for those that take these meds, you will always have a high serum gastrin level and very low stomach acid. The minute you stop taking Nexium (or Prilosec, or Prevacid), you have so much serum gastrin in your bloodstream that when it signals the proton pump to produce, you get an oversecretion of acid. When a patient tries to come off the medication, they find their reflux "is worse than ever" when, in fact, it is the hypersecretory response of withdrawal. This goes away eventually, but it is VERY tough to deal with in the meantime. There is a method to withdrawing from Nexium and it is a very slow process. I started it this week. Yesterday I didn't take one--missed my dose--and was burning so bad I couldn't take it and had to take the pill last night. Of course, I didn't "fix" my diet either. I will try harder in a few days. I really want off of this stuff.

Ahh...I totally understand your DH. I'm thinking that Diet Coke is laced with crack because I'm addicted to it, too. :teeth:

When I got pregnant with dd, I quit smoking and I also quit drinking Diet Coke. Smoking was a piece of cake compared to giving up the caffeine and the minute that kid was popped out, I fell off the wagon with a resounding crash. I had my ex running around the hospital trying to find a vending machine. :rotfl:

I hope he feels better soon--I do understand how hard it is to give it up, though.

Hey Mal...:lmao:

Let's see..I have to give up an entire laundry list of stuff. You know what is the hardest? Soda and coffee.

I've never heard it said better! :thumbsup2 :lmao:

My DH is the same way. It took him two years to finally give up the dark colas that were aggravating his acid reflux.

That and I finally bullied him into taking his Nexium.

Well, I guess I needed to be more understanding! Poor DH. :( I guess I didn't realize how addicting it is...I've never experienced that. I do drink Coke regularly (the real stuff, not the nasty diet! ;) ) and sometimes I think, "Man, a Coke would be good right now!" but if I don't have any, I drink something else.

Ya'll have shown me the light...I will never again deprive him of his Diet Coke...but I will nag him just a little about it... ;)
