I didn't give out candy..I gave out ROCKS!

Regardless of whether the OP was true or not, people thought it was clever. I didn't get it - didn't get the Charlie Brown connection- and even when I figured it out still think it's mean. Charlie Brown experiences the worst kind of rejections - not the kind of things you actually do to people - just the kind of failures we can relate all relate to because they are the like the worst things we imagine.

IMO whether the OP did it or not is a moot point - this is now a debate about whether it would be funny or mean to do such a thing.

One difference with Halloween is that kids are getting tons of candy which truly makes up for a rock or tampon or that nasty orange and black candy (now that should be against the law,LOL).
I don't think a kid will be disappointed with one rock versus tons of candy. It's kind of like getting underwear from grandma for Christmas but that's okay because there is plenty more neat stuff to get......:p

Okay, I gotta ask, why do you think pencils are worse than rocks?

ACK! You could put your EYE out with those things!
:p

Not sure what all the hubub is about. We've found rocks in DD's bag before as well as a spoon and a little bag of erasers.

And to the person who said we didn't have to worry about rocks and other naughty things being in our bags years ago, that's just not true. When I was a kid (this would be at LEAST 40 years ago), we recieved unusual things when we went out trick or treating. I DO remember the occasional rock, toothbrush AND toothpaste, prayer brochures, bookmarks, and one year someone was handing out Superballs........whey they FIRST came out.

I could'a CHOKED on those things!

I don't really have an opinion on the OP; sorry, but I did want to say:

No one ever ate rocks as a kid?? I did; I know my brother did too. And no one had to give them to us; we picked them right up off the ground. Ate 'em, and passed 'em right on. No biggie.

I know they're a choking hazard. So are a million other things kids come into contact with on a daily basis. Just my $0.02.

*Donning flame suit*

Some folks have mentioned about not taking this seriously, but I still think it was highly inappropriate. Yes, it's a moot point - she did it already. Plus, someone had mentioned how dramatic the OP's post tend to be so I was curious and I checked.

Apparently I learned that she has stated:

- I like the kids with the geeky costumes. I was a geek myself at that age and always wore wierd costumes.

- that her ds basically inherited her seriousness

- and that she's overworked at her job (Sonic .. right? ).

For someone who was a geek in school, says that there is a serious side to her, and that she is overworked at Sonic I find what she did ironic..... Girl, where's the love???

Yes, what you say or do will haunt you .... :earboy2: j/k

I don't understand why Pencils are a bad thing to give out on Halloween? My kids both received a pencil from an older woman who lives by herself and the pencil itself was a Halloween theme with pumpkins on it.

 Why is that bad? They both brought them to school today to use! :)

Personally, I like the idea of non-candy items, like pencils. I can see where it's not a particularly huge thrill to a child. My DD is taking a child care class in high school, and had to teach the lesson on Halloween etiquette ("Trick or Treat" and "thank you") as well as Halloween safety, and then they took the kids (pre-school) trick or treating to some of the classrooms. She told me that the Art teacher gave out pencils, and the kids just looked  . I know that when my kids were little, candy never entered their little mouths unless there was an event, like Halloween, and believe me, they wanted the candy. Like I said, fine with me if they got something else...I was very particular about what my kids ate when they were little...but to them, candy was a BIG thrill. Pencils, we had.

You know, I just don't get what you are trying to say here. I don't understand how being a geek in school, having a serious side and working hard at sonic would have anything to do with with giving rocks to kids at halloween and thinking it was funny. I can't find the connection here at all because I don't see how any of these traits would make her less likely to have done this.

My dd collected rocks as a kid (and she wasn't very discriminating either, she'd find treasures in the driveway, lol) and I think she'd have liked getting a rock as well as getting a pencil or toothbrush. I would have thought it was a little odd but she would have been fine with it.

imagine this funny scenario, kid gets rock, goes home like a good kid parents pick up bag to inspect candy, dump it out on their nice glass top table, rock cracks or breaks glass........

now that would be hilarious.....:smooth: :smooth: :smooth:

My family always celebrated St. Nicholas Day when I was a kid. We kids would put our shoes outside our bedroom door and in the morning there would be little presents in or by them. If we were good, that is. If we were bad, we'd get coal, straw and rocks. As a kind of reminder that we only had three weeks to shape up until Christmas!

If I had gotten a rock in my Halloween bag, I'd have thought someone was trying to tell me that I'd been a bad kid, and I'd have worried about that until at least St. Nick's Day!

I think the giving of rocks was a bad choice, although I doubt that any child will be tainted for life because of it. What I'd have worried about was the germs on the rocks (even though the OP chose "clean ones", there's no telling what's on those rocks ...) or the thought of some kid finding a rock in his bag and using it as a projectile to throw at other kids. I mean, would you go out into the neighborhood on any other day and start handing kids rocks? Probably not.

And, of course, the reputation I'd get if I was the one giving out rocks would be a bit of a concern. The kids in my neighborhood would use that to justify a label of "crazy lady", as in "there goes the crazy lady that gave out rocks at Halloween."

:earsboy:

You know what guys? I think this thing has gotten so wierd that we all need to hit that "unsubscribe from this thread" button and let it die!

Not before asking about this:

"in DD's bag before as well as a spoon"

I cannot phathom why anyone would do this instead of turning out the lights. Do you really think it funny to pull the wool over the eyes of kids or are you posting this stuff to rile people up and get attention.

Just when I think this board cannot get any stranger....

I wouldn't worry about choking, throwing, etc. - I would just think it's the OP's way of saying "screw you" to my child.

And so where is OP?
Probably laughing her butt off reading all of this.:hyper:

I'd have told the kids I was giving them a rock and to bring it back later for some candy!

I ate tons of rocks as a kid and I lived... gee, methinks todays kids are shielded too much...from germs, failure and disappointment to name a few.... but that's a whole 'nother thread.

Gee, I'm sure kids would never throw or eat rocks they find in their driveways or on the street. Just the ones that are found in Trick or Treat bags.:teeth:

::yes::

Personally, I think the rock thing is pretty funny. I also think there's a big probability that doing that crowns you the new "crazy lady" of the neighborhood, but whatever.
A friend at work said that his 3 kids came home with mini bars of Dove soap in their trick or treat bags. Now that's pretty bizarre too.

Now that would really make me nervous about what the neighbors thought of me
