I didn't give out candy..I gave out ROCKS!

Although I think the choking hazard and other warnings people have associated with the rocks are overreactions, I do think it's pretty weird and stupid to give out rocks to trick or treaters. I'm a grown adult and have not ever seen the charlie brown special, neither has my DH or my DS so any "joke" related to it would be lost on us. I'd most likely just say "how stupid" and throw it away.

OK Kristy, while I wasn't one who commended TOV for her creativity, I was one who didn't consider it that horrible either. I think we feel secure that not everyone would turn around and give rocks out in the future. The fact that one house would do so is what makes it quirky and kinda funny.

I DON'T get the original Target thing. Is she trying to say Target wouldn't sell her candy because she pre-wrote a check? Is there a particular reason she couldn't go somewhere else to get candy? I mean, it must have taken a fair amount of time to go to a park and get rocks.....no ATM's nearby?????

Target USED to have a policy of accepting checks written over the amount and giving the difference back. They no longer do that. I was told that by not one, but TWO team leads. It wasn't a question of not having any money in the bank, nor of not being near an ATM. I don't have an ATM card..well..I don't keep it with me, tbh. It stays at home in the safe so I can't spend too much $$$. :p
I also didn't bring any other checks with me, so it's not like I could've just written another check or something. I typically don't even carry CASH. At all.

The rocks I picked up were from a path in a park on my way home. I took about 5 minutes to gather up about 15-20 rocks that were small enough to be held in my hand, but not so small as to be easily mistaken for candy. They were roughly egg-sized, though did not resemble eggs in any way, shape or form. It was easy to tell that they were rocks.

As to WHY I haven't looked at this thread in 2 days..well..I DO have a life outside of the DIS ya know. ;) I work about 8 hrs a day, coupled with housework and looking after DS, that leaves little time for DISing except late at night. :)

Lighten up and stop trying to protect your little ones from every perceived "slight". They too will have to live in the real world someday.

Thankyou,IMGONNABE40!. :) You can't protect your kids from everything, no matter how you try.

Do not wait...go talk to your dr right now! As someone who suffers *still* from PPD and had to get medical help for it...I do not advise waiting at all!

TOV- I saw that you posted this on another thread. Maybe the PPD played a part in the decision to give kids rocks for T or T? If you are seeing a therapist for the PPD, just curious if you will tell her about the rock incident and I wonder what her opinion would be?
I'm sorry, I just find that giving kids rocks for T or T is really odd.

I'm not seeing a therapist, but I am on medication to help with the PPD.

The PPD didn't play a role in giving out rocks for Halloween. I felt really, really bad because Target refused my check and I felt that I had to give them SOMETHING. Rocks are better than nothing, I think.

*shrug*

I still don't get it. If you were going to get less than $20 cash back from Target, then use the cash to buy candy, why not just buy the candy in Target and use the full amount of the check?

I tried that. There was nothing I could buy that would equal exactly $10 and the machine wouldn't accept the check if the amount was less than $10. I don't know why..go ask Target. They are the one who changed their policy (something I was unaware of until Sunday). IF I had been aware of the new policy, I wouldn't have pre-written the check. I only did so because DH told me not to spend more than ten bucks on candy. I knew if I wrote it ou t for exactly ten dollars, I wouldn't be able to spend more than that because I don't carry cash usually and stopped carrying credit cards since my purse was ripped off last Dec.

My understanding is that she prewrote the check thinking that she wouldn't be spending as much and would get cash back. So, she didn't take any other form of payment. When she checked out, they wouldn't take her check since it wasn't for the exact amount. Therefore, she had to leave her purchases there and go on her way. That's my understanding anyway.

Wow... 13 pages TOV... some thread.

Personally I like the rock idea... I thought about giving out rocks to the kids with no costumes, but DH nixed the idea... said we would get egged... lol

Did you get egged?? If not, consider that 100% approval rating on your rock idea. :teeth:

No eggings, thank goodness. :p

We can't let the thread die now...we have to keep turning the page or we'll never get to the monster at the end of this thread. :teeth:

TOV

But when we got to the end of this thread, the only monster there was lovable, furry old TOV.

(Yes, I have S.S. on the brain also! I hear the only cure for it is to be hit in the head from a rock given away as a Halloween treat) :Pinkbounc  Amy:sunny:

Tsk, tsk, tsk, TOV! Have you never heard of the Leave No Trace Awareness Campaign? Take only photographs, leave only footprints. People can and do get arrested for taking rocks, flowers, etc. from parks, wilderness areas, etc.

Oh no - for those who thought she bordered on pure evil before, this will certainly put it over the edge!

Well, I was kind of worried about that, which is why I looked around to make sure nobody else was nearby before I scooped up those pretty rocks. :p

TOV... I just noticed in my 'user CP' that this rock thread has more views and posts than my remodeling thread... ::::: pout :::::

Well, both of my kids love rocks & it wouldn't have bothered me. Yes, I would think it odd, VERY odd, but to call the police? I think that's a bit extreme. Most kids, if old enough to eat candy, know not to eat a rock - let's hope. My kids are 4 & 7, DH & I check the candy before they eat it. Had I found a rock, I would've assumed they (the kids) found it & put it in the bag. Now jaw breakers - I hate finding those in my kids bags, I throw them out immediately, I can see my kids choking on those before choking on a rock.

I agree with what another poster wrote, maybe draw little eyes on the rocks & tell them they are pet rocks, maybe even give each a name:p .

I just pray that she didn't give any rocks to Scouts - or she'll be facing the wrath of Scoutmasters across America....::yes::

maybe you could give out benydryl. Aren't you the one that likes to drug kids before a flight to? Just turn out the light next year. We will ALL be better off for it!!!!!
