If no kids came by after your DH brought home the candy, it's probably because by then the neighborhood kids got the word you were giving out rocks.
Kids tell each other where the "good" and "bad" houses are.
For example, 'round here, if someone gives out something especially good like full-sized candy bars or candy cigarettes, kids tell other kids. Then those are the houses that get the most trick-or-treaters.
