I didn't give out candy..I gave out ROCKS!

Now really, I think that some of you are making this out to be far worse than it is. I got the joke right away, The great Pumpkin! In this day and age every parent MUST check the bag before your child eats anything. And do you really believe that a child who is old enough to trick or treat is going to try and eat a rock. What if the rock had been painted like a pumpkin? Would that have been ok? All I can say is it's a good thing that we don't post our address, because I fear that some of you would chuck a rock through the OP's window and then call CPS! If a child saw a rock they would look at it and then push it aside to get to the candy!
Making to much of this? Did you give out rocks as well? That is called not normal. Funny, would not be a word I would use for that. I think they do have medication for people that find giving out rocks okay. Please, I hope the op comes back and says it's just a joke! I would be a little concerned about this one if she didn't. No joke!

I also remember the Charlie Brown special. Don't they show that anymore?

I think y'all are really going off the deep end, here. Overreaction city, man.

For it to be truly funny - a note would be including with the rock, explaining the Peanuts connection. AND - then there would be some candy along with the rock.

If you don't have any candy - turn out your outside lights, lock your doors, and don't answer the door. Plain and simple.

In this day and age every parent MUST check the bag before your child eats anything.

And it's stupid things like this that make it necessary to check the bags.

When I was a kid we never worried that some idiot would find it amusing to give little kids rocks as a Halloween treat.

If nothing else, this serves as a reminder that there are still some very sick people out there who mean our children harm--all in the name of "humor."

Actually, my DD would like a rock. We cleaned out her bedroom the other day and she has little treasure boxes under her bed with rocks, feathers, snake skins etc. in them. She didn't want to throw the rocks away. She would have saved TOV's rock and said, "This I got awhile "trick or treating" when I was a little girl ." :teeth:

I'm glad you put a winking smiley on your thread, otherwise I might have believed it.

I think its an odd thing to give out, yes. I agree that she probably should have just turned out the light and not answered the door or perhaps given some candy WITH the rocks. But I gotta agree with Hagred here, it does seem like overaction might be the name of the game on this thread. Oy. I doubt any child died from biting into a rock this morning, or any of them are psychologically damaged as a result. :)

Wow.. and they call me mean!

Dan, I am totally surprised you would think that what she did was acceptable and creative! I always thought you adored kids.

Just because they gave a cartoon character on a holiday special that is older than a good majority of the posters here rocks in his trick or treat bag does not make it acceptable or even funny.

If we are going to think imitating cartoons is funny, then next year you can drop an anvil with "ACME" printed on it on someone's head to watch them turn into an accordian.

Very juvenile and a rather weird thing to do if you ask me. As others said, turn your light out next year. :sad2:

There is candy that does look like rocks, but unlike a real one, you don't break your teeth when you bite into it.

I'm sorry, but I don't think this was very well thought out. I can't imagine giving out rocks to those sweet little kids who came to my door (well, except for one but that's a whole other story. )

There's too much potential for harm and I wouldn't have done it.

I'm reasonably sure Dan's adoration of kids hasn't changed as a result of his comments on this thread. :( He's always been so sweet to my two kids in the few times we've been in his company. :)

That is why I was surprised he thought this idea was great.

It's my impression that Dan also has that long-lost attribute of trying to find something positive in any situation or person. I believe it's a more difficult, and therefore more valiant, effort to look for the positive in people instead of taking the easy road of looking for and finding only the negative to talk about.

Perhaps because he thought the likelihood of any child getting hurt with one of the rocks pretty slim, but that perhaps some children might think it was a creative and sort of silly alternative to candy.

I'm pretty sure he still adores children in general.

Um, why not just turn out the porch light and not answer the door until your DH brought candy home or even give out small change?

Because, by giving out rocks, she probably had a bunch of households laughing, trying to figure out who gave them the rocks.

If my kids had a rock in their bag, they would be thrilled! Because all Charlie Brown got was ROCKS!

I cannot believe how many people are offended by this. WOW!

Where has all the humor gone?

Yay for Snoopy and Hagred. You all were much kinder than I. I had to hit the back button.

First of all, and no, I don't have a web site to support this...
I believe the "trick" or "treat" means give me a treat or I'm giving YOU a trick. I don't think it means, "Hey lady, give me a trick or a treat."
Rocks?

I agree, you were lucky you did not get a trick right back. I understand you were trying to make a joke but really that is just plain scary.

Ditto.

Think about it people....the kid comes home with his candy...empties it on the table so mom/dad can have a look at what is safe...they pick up the rock and say gee...who would give a rock? and in the trash it would go!or as others said into their little rock treasure box!...what is the big deal!!!

It isn't like it was the only thing they got all evening!!

Holycow

and I also just saw Charlie Brown...and yes it was sad for Charlie because that is ALL he got the whole night...not just ONE!

Lighten up!

Call me crazy but we are trying to find the good in someone who is giving rocks out for Halloween? Wait, I know it's not meant to be mean it's just silly! I would empty out my child's bag and say,"Ah, how cute someone gave out rocks. Isn't that creative!."NOT! Now it's comfirmed. Their are some crazy people out there! I just had a thought. Next year I think I'm going to give out paper clips. I have so many extra ones lying around. Won't that be so cute to see paper clips in your childs candy bag?The best part is they are softer than rocks. So if someone bites into it they won't break a tooth. Kinda clever huh?
