I Confirmed It!!!!!!! A family of four really CAN eat for $75 a day!!!!!

They get 18% pretax onhte DDP. I tipped extra a few times when the service was really good and then when we had to pay oop for things the plan didnt cover and for the meal we had to pay for since we ran out of crdits.

And I bet all 18% get reported to the IRS. This is really quite brilliant on Disney's part on many levels.

the little math man :teacher: lives in my head too... and i just do not get this... how is a $5.00 tip on a pre-tax check of $52.02 or a post-tax check of $55.40 an OVERAGE of anything? it's less than TEN PERCENT! my math man says it's a SHORTAGE of $2.80/$3.31 (pre/post tax) NO?

You're right! Thanks for pointing that out. I had accidentally typed in 66.40, then corrected it to 60.40 to reflect the orginal example, but didn't correct the other figures. I'll be back in a jiffy with a corrected version!!

In reference to

We did it again! Family of 4 eats for $75 a day. Read all about it, plus reviews!

and in regards to whether or not that OP really could make the claim, as there was "debate" concerning her tipping practices.

Let me preface this post with the fact that most of my family has or is still working in restaurants as bus boys, hostesses, bartenders, waitresses and managers. Also, tipping only has to be done on the food and beverage sale and service (Subtotal), not on the sales tax although we all usually do that. The subtotal is what is reported to the IRS by the employer. I just verified it on the IRS website, feel free to check it out for yourself. The federal government doesn’t care about state tax.

So I present to you what NvrBnToWDW posted about the 3 sit-down meals (yes, after all of those posts only 3 of the meals were actually table service meals!). I leave out the fact that she explained that she had a single party that matched her tip to give the “worst case” figures. I have calculated what 15% would be on the food and beverage sale and service (Subtotal) and what 15% would be on the After-Tax Total (what most people usually use to tip).

Planet Hollywood
Subtotal: $39.05
Plus Tax: $41.59
Tip: $4.00
Grand Total: $45.59

15% tip on Subtotal PlusTax: $47.45
Difference: Shortage of $1.86
15% tip on After-Tax Total: $47.83
Difference: Shortage of $2.24

Sci-Fi
Subtotal: $52.02
Plus Tax: $55.40
Tip: $5.00
Grand Total:$60.40

15% tip on Subtotal Plus Tax: $63.20
Difference: Shortage of $2.80
15% tip on After-Tax Total: $63.71
Difference: Shortage of $3.31

Primetime 50's Cafe
Subtotal: $45.99
Plus Tax: $48.98
Tip: $7.00
Grand Total: $55.98

15% tip on Subtotal Plus Tax: $55.88
Difference: Overage of $0.01
15% tip on After-Tax Total: $56.33
Difference: Shortage of $0.35

SUMMARY:
Pre-Tax Tipping:
She tipped $3.66 (-$1.86-$2.80+$0.01 = -$3.66) under the 15%

Post-Tax Tipping:
She tipped $5.90 (-$2.24-$3.31-$0.35 = -$5.90) under the 15%

According to many people’s guidelines: She needed to leave $5.90 more in tip. Add that to her grand total of $525.68 to equal $531.58 divide it by 7 days to equal $75.94 per day.

**Edited to add tax to the Subtotal and better format

Now I understand you numbers. I never quibbled over her ability to feed her family for $75 a day. I just thought and still do think that the tips her well below what is acceptable. I know if I tiopped that way I would not be talking about it on a public forum.

If i were going to question her $75 a day total I would wonder how much she paid for the in room dining she did since none of that was accounted for.

well, actually, now w/the corrected version and the rounding we all learned in school, it should read "a family of four can eat for $76 per day" ;)

thanks for correcting the math... i was reallllllllly scratching my head in wonder thinking that there was some part of the example that i just was not seeing! :)

Or $.83 more than the taxable amount, if it is indeed 8% on servers (that was what I thought too, but the IRS site was far from clear - apparently, they now have the restaurant track tips over a period of time and tax based on average tips during that period). I think its a pretty cool job where people tip you 20%, but you only get taxed on 8%, plus your miniscule base. Where do I sign up?

I read about all these 20 and 26 pecent tips I wish I had this when I waitressed. I only had some regulars that tipped that kind of change when I did that for a living. :confused3

My father would haunt me if I tipped less than 20%/

Hey, thanks for letting your little man correct my little man! Mine was getting very tired....finally. :rotfl2:

You are absolutely right about what we learned in school :rotfl: and that we should now round to $76 dollars. :thumbsup2 At the very least it should say $75.94! I'll fix that!!

What a pitiful, pitiful life I must lead to stay on these boards most of the day, worrying with something that shouldn't really be my concern. You don't have to tell me, I know, I need to find another hobby. ::yes::

I know it's a lot to read through and a lot to follow, but the original person mentioned that sometimes she paid for tip in cash and didn't write down the exact amount. She also had someone traveling with them that paid more than his/her share of the tip. So all in all in all it looks like sufficient tip was left. I was just going with the numbers she had posted that didn't include the extra tip from the other person. Make sense?
