I can't eat meat that's not WELL DONE...what's wrong with me!?

I used to always eat steak well done as well. I'd need steak sauce or something & never really LOVED steak. Then I had a boyfriend who insisted I try it at least medium well. He said if you have to put sauce on a steak you're doing it all wrong. So I tried medium well; I liked it. So then he suggested I just try medium. O.M.G....

Truly I think it's a mental thing to not want to see blood, and I get it. I used to be the same. I still can't do rare or medium rare. It has to be cooked. But medium is the perfect middle that makes a steak "cooked" and yet still tender & delicious.

Now, I try to cook steak at home and I never get the timing right. I somehow always over cook and disappoint myself. :( The chewy steak is just NOT GOOD. While I understand that may be what you are used to, I promise the flavor is 100000% better at medium.

For those of us that eat steak medium rare (at the minimum), it is overcooked. A well done steak is gross to me.

I do eat hamburgers well done NOW due to obvious food temp issues. But before all that came out I used to eat them with pink in the middle.

That being said, however you want to eat your steak is your business. If you like it well done, go ahead and eat your overcooked steak.....LOL.
Federal food safety regulations in Canada dictate that you can't be served a hamburger (or any ground meat) under 160F for fear of e-coli. E-coli is the "new" trichinosis. I'm always taken aback while visiting the States when I'm asked how I want my burger done.

I don't think your a weirdo, but I do feel sorry for you.

Any steak that I have to use a knife to cut is just beef to me.

There is nothing like the taste of a good steak cooked med raw or raw that you can cut with a fork. yummy.
Um, that depends as much on the cut of meat as the way it's cooked. I don't like tenderloin or rib-eye (two very tender cuts) because they tend to be too fatty. I eat striploin or sirloin which are denser, much leaner cuts. No matter how you cook them you still need a knife. I'm trying to picture somebody seated at Morton's grinding away at a New York Strip with a fork only...:rotfl2:Dinner would be exhausting!

Sure you can eat your food any way you like. Just like anything else in life, don't look for the approval of others. Just embrace who you are and enjoy life on your terms.

But if you're confused as to where the it "ruins the steak" mindset comes from, imagine someone who only likes their ice cream melted. Sure, that's their choice but it's hard for many to understand and many would say it ruins the ice cream, right? Kind of the same thing.

I prefer my steaks well done, too. It is how I grew up, yes, but I also do not like the texture of "under done" meat. I love the texture (and taste!) of well done. Otherwise, it feels like I am eating flesh...blech.

There is nothing wrong with it - it is the same as how you prefer your eggs...over easy, over medium, over hard, scrambled. Everyone has different preferences to taste and texture. One mans "ruined" is another mans "gourmet". And I think it is pretty snobby to say otherwise, truly.

I can't chew a steak that's cooked too well. Leather.

I would never give you a hard time about it though.

lol you got me there it does depend on the cut of steak, but I love that yummy fatty cuts.

Love a good Ribeye!!!! I prefer fattier cuts, but I would never turn down a good NY strip! I most often buy flatirons, they grill up perfect!

Oh, and even though I hate well done steaks, give me medium rare please, I have no issue with people that prefer them that way.

Your not weird, both DH and I like ours well done. I cook meat in tin foil to well done and it is very tender.

Sorry, no help from me... Med or Med-Rare for me on a steak.
And I do not like any meat that is over cooked.

I don't enjoy burned tough leather!!!

I like it just a little pink in the middle. I've given up ordering steak, no matter what I say they bring it disgustingly raw in the middle and I have to send it back. I think if I'm paying for it they should cook it the way I ask. I don't like waiters who turn their nose up with a superior attitude because I don't want blood running out of my food.

I like a medium in my steak, but my wife likes it so rare that it's still mooing on the plate when it hits the table. I have no idea how she eats meat so rare.

I don't care if it ruins the meat or not. I cannot eat anything other than well done, all the way thru! No pink - at all! And, no way blood - yuck!

I would never eat sushi either.

Also I need to state that I HATE when everyone says that I ruin the steak like that...isn't taste subjective to everyone?

This is my mom's fault...when she had me even as a kid she would cut EVERYTHING open when I was younger and say make sure it's not pink - if it is it's not cooked. (80's paranoia about food poisiong or something that was going around)

I just don't like the taste!!!! It's so soft too! Am I weird or do I have fellow weirdos!

NO WAY

I don't know what is wrong with you, but you need help to overcome this....

But why does it "ruin the meat"?
When I was a server, the cooks used to get so mad when people would order a great cut of steak well done. "Why don't I just grill up some shoe leather?!" I remember them saying. It was their opinion that a beautiful cut of meat should be cooked properly (just like you wouldn't overcook other things), and properly was medium rare.

Here's the "culinary science" behind it. ;) http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/beefporkothermeats/a/Well-Done-Steak.htm

I think the difference between 'weird' and 'difference in taste' has to do with why you like your steaks well done. If you just prefer the taste and texture, that's fine. If it's because you think a pink or red steak looks disgusting and bloody or that you're afraid of getting sick, then I do think it's weird control issue. I knew someone who not only ate her steaks well done but she also would not eat any kind of meat that had not been deboned. She also insisted on 2 refrigerators one for meat and one for everything else (and not for religious reasons). She was weird.

I don't think you are weird at all. I can taste if there is a hint of pink in my burger, steak, pork, etc. and it makes me sick to my stomach. My DH tells me that the chefs give me the worst cuts of meat because they think I am ruining the meat, but I don't care at least I can stomach it!!

Disney related story on the topic. My dad likes his meat very very well done. Back in 2003 the entire family (mom, dad, all the kids and grand kids - 12 of us) took a Disney Cruise for my Parent's 50th wedding anniversary. The first night we arrive in the dining room. My parents had never been on a cruise before and were just not sure what to make of the whole thing.

My dad ordered a steak "Sort of Well Done" - I have no idea where that came from because he is a VERY Well Done kinda guy. The steak arrived, dad cut into it, leaned over to me and said "I can't eat this" - don't know why he didn't want to tell our waiter. This was my third Disney Cruise and I knew that they would take care of things. I signaled our waiter and let him know that my dad needed his steak cooked a bit more. A few minutes later the waiter returned with the steak. My dad cut into it, again leaned over to me and said "I still can't eat this". I signaled the waiter once again - handed him the steak and said "Burn it". The waiter returned with the steak and my dad was thrilled it was perfect.

Of course the waiter (like everyone on the Cruise Ship) was very pleasant and helpful and from that moment on our waiter and my dad were best buddies. Our waiter always triple checked to make sure everything was just perfect for my dad and my dad was thrilled (and knowing my dad, that waiter got an enormous tip at the end of the cruise).

Well said! I love the analogy :)

When restaurants sometimes refuse to make certain cuts of meat a certain way, that's when you know it's "wrong."

And it's nothing like having scrambled, fried, or hard boiled eggs.
