I can not believe the prices of

Check out Zaycon Foods (they have a website). Trucks deliver on set dates/times to many cities across the United States. I have been using them for years. They have been on the Today Show and other networks that have had stories on how to cut food cost. The events rotate with different meats -I have tried the Chicken (fantastic quality) Bacon, Sausage and Beef. The Beef right now is lean and fine ground for $3.99 per pound. They sell the ground beef in 40 lb boxes ( four 10 pound chubs). I break it down into freezer bags and we are good to go for months. I have never been disappointed in the quality of any of their products and its a $$ saver!!
Thanks for posting this. I'm looking into their products right now. The biggest issue for me is that you have to purchase quite a bit at once which can be expensive. Of course once you get stocked you potentially save money but it can be tough at first. :headache:

You can ask around and see if family /friends would like to split a case with you. I always have someone willing to split and get a great deal. :)

I was looking here in Mass. for grass fed beef farms, etc. Well...one I found...Caledonia Farms wants like $12.00 a pound for London Broil, $6 for a dozen eggs and about $5 for a pound of ground beef. Good grief!!! I will stick to the supermarket sales and stock up for that price. What a bargain...not!:rotfl2:

Holy moly that is high! The 1/4 cow we got last March was $2.80 a pound and that was for all cuts (ground, steaks roasts, etc) we got 175 pounds for $490.00. Haven't got the price for this years cow which we pick up 3/15 but according to the farmer it is about $3.00/lb.

I should add too that this was the price for the whole cow, we found 3 other families to split with.

Also, check around a couple places, the one farmer we used charged alot less if you bought he whole cow rather than individual cuts, those he sold at prices like you found.

We pay around $3 a pound hanging weight (we end up with about 60% of that in our freezer....the rest is bones, etc) for our grass fed beef from a local farmer. With processing fees (local butcher), we pay around 5.25 for all our finished beef (burger, steaks, roasts). Even if it was all ground beef, to me, this is a fair price. Our burger is EXTREMELY lean (when you cook a burger, it ends up the same size as when you start, and I can make meat loaf on a flat cookie sheet...no grease comes out at all....and I add oil to my meatloaf!). So, pound for pound, I get MORE meat.

I also feel good supporting our local farmer. He's a great guy, and offers an outstanding product at a fair price. No middle man.

That must be hanging weight price. There is no way a 1/4 of a cow ends up with that much "finished" pounds of beef. We get right around 90-100 pounds of meat (finished) from a 1/4 of a beef. Sounds like your hanging weight price is similar to that of ours.

I just ordered another 1/4 grassed/finished beef and we paid 3.50/lb hanging weight. That is with the butcher fees. It's really a hell of a deal, we get roasts and steaks and burger out of it for way less than conventional beef would run per pound from the store.

Also, for produce, look into community supported agriculture (CSA). They usually run through the summer, are local farms, and cost less than Bountiful Baskets while being organic or close to it. BB is also a good choice. Some communities have community gardens that you put in a few hours of work and share in the produce with the other workers. There's also pickyourown.org and canning/freezing for the winter. There are lots of ways to eat locally and cheaper than the grocery store (we picked strawberries for 1.00/ lb last year). Also gleaning groups!

We don't eat a lot of beef but also pay $4.99 lb for organic grass fed beef. I haven't seen an increase on that price yet.

Where are you buying organic grass feed beef for 4.99!!?

The reason you haven't seen an increase in your organic grass feed beef is due to the fact that your beef is grass fed. The last few years most beef farmers largest price increase has been the cost of grain (mostly corn) and a big reason for this increase has been the ethanol mandate that has 10% of our gas being ethanol. Ethanol is made from corn and with the gov. paying crazy prices to force us to convert to ethanol burning cars that has greatly increased the price of corn. Farmers have been jumping on the corn craze and planting it like crazy and if it wasn't for the drought the price would have really dropped this year (corn and then beef prices).

My husband and I are organic dairy farmers that also raise and sell grass fed beef in NY. His family has been on this farm since 1953 and our son will be the third generation farming here.

Went shopping this morning and just noticed that milk is up to 3.08 a gallon. We go through about 2 gallons a week.

Should have bought the chuck roast last week…..today it was $5.99 lb! 2 of them were $36.00

I'm so happy to be veggie. Haven't eaten any meat in over 20 years. Save a lot of money!!
