Despite my DH's suggestion that "I let it go", I called the groomer this morning. In my most calm, rational voice, I told her that I got Chelsea back from the vet.
I told her that the diagnosis was neck trauma from scruffing. She asked me if she had "a stroke". I told her no, she "had hypoxia from stress and scruffing and that the current loss is due to spinal cord swelling and we don't know what she will recover". She asked me if I thought she caused the problem. I told her that I indeed did. That Chelsea has a huge bruise with a hematoma on her neck. She said, "I did grab and hold her hard, I wanted to get her done. She turned blue before but didn't pass out". I was incredulous! I told her that there is a lesson here. That if she "has an old dog who doesn't want to be groomed and its stressful for them, don't do it that day. Tell the owner that it can't be done, that the dog could be injured. It is much better to lose a grooming fee than a dog. She wasn't remorseful at all. Not one "I am sorry, I didn't mean for it to happen". I even said to her, "I know you didn't want to hurt her but you did and I don't know that she can ever be the same. That is hurtful to me M..." I then asked her to return my check for $50 for Annie. She said that she wouldn't cash it. I asked her to please put it in an envelop and mail it back, my address is on the check. That was it. That was the conversation. I felt that perhaps if she takes away the knowledge that she did this, and how she did this, maybe, just maybe, she won't do it to another elderly dog.

OMG!!!

I hope she uses this as a learning experience!

You handled it very well!! I don't know that I could have been so calm and understanding! I think I would have freaked on the woman!!!

:grouphug: I am so sorry :( I hope that your dog will recover. Honestly, it upsets me that my sister has her dog groomed regularly...I worry about how they treat the dog while she's not in sight. I know that there are good dog groomers out there, but stories like this just confirm my worries. This person sounds like a jerk, and she probably could care less what pets she harms in her effort to just get the job done :( I'm sure that she won't think twice before abusing someone else's pet, because she sounds like she has no remorse over what she did to yours :sad2:

I am so sorry. It's hard enough when our animals are sick or hurt, but it's another level of emotions when someone else caused them pain - especially someone they trusted and knew.

I'll tell you though....you are a better person than I am because I'm not entirely sure I could have held myself back from grabbing her by the neck hard.

OMG....you were a lot nicer than I would have been....I am normally a non confrontational person but when it is about my kids, grandkids or my dog....i am. Does this groomer work independently or for a company, vet office...? If possible I would complain to whoever she answers to.....or report it to the Better Business Burea.
I take my little Chico to Petsmart because they groom right in full veiw of the customers....I like knowing I can stick around and watch if I choose. I think it just keeps everyone honest when it is right out there for all to see.

That is so horrible! I, too, have an elderly dog. I used to have her groomed no problem. But now she doesn ot even like for me to mess with her. I have been very hesitant to have her groomed and now this really makes me hesitant. She gets wild whenever I try to do anything to her. So she just looks unkempt. I hate it, but I can't do more for her. I always think if she acts like this for me - how would she do for the groomer. I may just let her continue to look a little rough around the edges. I am so sorry about your dog!

Believe me, it was really difficult. I had the advantage of time. This happened Tuesday and she never called once to see how Chelsea was. I imagine over and over what I WANTED to say and then I thought about what I should say. My first reaction was that she was incredibly stupid but the truth is, she doesn't care. I would rather be stupid than uncaring.

Oh my gosh!! I just knew the groomer was at fault. However, to be so cold about it! You handled it very well. I don't think I could have been that calm. Others may disagree, but I think she needs to pay the vet bill. She caused this problem and could have easily caused Chelsea to die. Thank goodness you know the truth now.

you are a lot more tollerant than I would be if a groomer seriously hurt one of my dogs. I would see her behind in court and make sure she NEVER had a chance to hurt another dog.

Sure accidents do happen.. but to say she saw your dog turn blue and then do nothing about it right there and then???

I admire your strength and reserve.

She doesn't have a lot of resources. She is a single mother of one 12 year old son, living in a rented property. She supports herself by grooming dogs, raising an uncommon breed of dog that she shows nationally and sells nationally. She takes in dogs of her customers who go on vacation. I would leave my dogs with her. I have known her for twelve years. I don't even know if she has a license. I always thought she was wonderful and I think she is to young, cooperative dogs. In hind sight I recall her making disparaging comments about certain dogs in her care but I thought that she liked Chelsea. I know she loves Annie. Oh well, she won't see Annie anymore.
I think I will take Annie to PetCo for grooming. I will stay and wait for her. Chelsea's grooming days are over for now. Part of me wants to be vengeful so it is an effort to take the high road. Maybe God will bless Chelsea for that. I hope so.

She held the dog until it turned BLUE - but because it didn't "pass out" she figured it was OKAY?????

Oh boy.. I'd be having "homicidal tendencies" right about now..

My kids feel the same way you do. I think she should offer to pay the vet bill and I am sure if I took her to small claims court, I would win. I just don't think it would be good for me to be that vendictive, as much as I want to be. In reality I don't think she would have the money to pay me when I won and it would significantly impact her ability to care for her son. No amount of money will improve Chelsea's situation. Her sending me back $50 will sting her a bit. I will take some comfort in that and in her knowing that I know what happened and she has lost a customer of 12 years who visits every 6 to 8 weeks and boards her dogs with her.

Can you imagine!! Now in all "fairness" (I am not sure that is a word I can use here) Chelsea is old and it takes very little to stress her. About two years ago, she offered to clean her teeth. While I was holding Chelsea, her tongue got a little dusky. I told her that I didn't care if her teeh had tartar, I did not want to compromise her heart and if she ever got dusky when she was doing anything, don't do it. That's what's amazing. We have had this conversation in the past. I can't believe that she would proceed!!

OMGosh, I am so sorry Dawn! That is so awful! I have my dogs groomed too and I'd hate to have them held until they turn blue everytime! What a cruel woman! Your poor doggie! :guilty:

That is disgusting. You are a strong women to handle it this way.
I am glad you found out though. I know you don't want to destroy this women but if I was a client and found out this happened to YOUR dog, I would never take my dog there again.
Also you know what they say about "behind closed doors", this woman could be a monster.

I was a MAJOR misjudger of character in this case. If I know anyone who uses her, I will tell them for sure.

Oh boy! I'm glad your dog made it home alive. I hope she continue to recover from this horrible mess.

I have been following this whole ordeal and although I have not commented before I have to commend you for taking the high road here.. I am not sure what I would do but I think I would want to go for the jugular......and I hate that I said that, but it has how I feel.

You took into consideration that this is her way of making a living, single parent, etc., but I am thinking here is your dog the only one she hurt and will she in fact learn a lesson from this event. The fact that she never said sorry just makes my blood boil..

Now I am wondering here can anyone be a dog groomer?? Do they have to have a license to groom dogs or to have a business?

I am pretty proud of your handling of this matter Dawn, not so sure I could be as gracious. Bravo!!

First off, she shouldn't be in business. I would file a complaint with the BBB/CoC/licensing bureau.

Next, find out of her "business" has a libaility insurance policy. C\File a claim with them at least for your medical bills.

That is ridiculous. I agree 100%, if the dog was having a abd day, she should ahve just suggested trying again another day.

If your vet does grooming, maybe it would be wise to ahve it done there under a light sedation (doggy Xanax). Or talk to the vet about who they suggest you use for a groomer. I'd also document your dogs injuries and what the groomer said and spread the word. Make sure your vet knows who this groomer was so they do'nt send further business there, and trust me, the vets all talk.
