"NEW YORK – Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin says she supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, a break with John McCain who has said he believes states should be left to define what marriage is. In an interview with Christian Broadcasting Network, the Alaska governor said she had voted in 1998 for a state amendment banning same sex marriage and hoped to see a federal ban on such unions.

"I have voted along with the vast majority of Alaskans who had the opportunity to vote to amend our Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. I wish on a federal level that's where we would go. I don't support gay marriage," Palin said. She said she believed traditional marriage is the foundation for strong families.

McCain, an Arizona senator, is supporting a ballot initiative in his state this year that would ban gay marriage. But he has consistently and forcefully opposed a federal marriage amendment, saying it would usurp states' authority on such matters.

As governor, Palin vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to the partners of gay state employees. In a debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden, Palin said she was "tolerant" of gays and said she supported certain legal protections for same-sex couples, like hospital visitation rights.

In the CBN interview, Palin also said she would speak out if she heard a supporter at a rally yell violent or threatening comments about Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee.

"What we have heard through some mainstream media is that folks have hollered out some atrocious and unacceptable things like 'kill him,'" Palin said, referring to a Washington Post story two weeks ago about angry supporters at a Palin rally in Florida. "If I ever were to hear that standing up there at the podium with the mike, I would call them out on that, and I would tell these people, no, that's unacceptable."

CBN released excerpts of the interview Monday and planned to broadcast it in its entirety Tuesday.

Palin also claimed religion and God had been "mocked" during the campaign, although she offered no evidence to support that.

"Faith in God in general has been mocked through this campaign, and that breaks my heart and that is unfair for others who share a faith in God and choose to worship our Lord in whatever private manner that they deem fit," she said.

Palin is a conservative Christian who was baptized and grew up attending Pentecostal churches. In September, Obama defended Palin's religious beliefs and said it would be "offensive" to portray her faith as strange or wrong.

Palin also reaffirmed her view that Obama had been "palling around with terrorists" because of his association with Bill Ayers, a 1960s-era radical who helped found the violent Weather Underground group to protest the Vietnam war. The group was responsible for bombings of several government buildings.

"I would say it again," she said.

Ayers and Obama live in the same Chicago neighborhood and have served together on charity boards. Ayers also hosted a house party for Obama when he was first running for the Illinois state Senate."

Someone needs to show her what a strong family is. And it ain't one man and one woman all the time. Odd are against her daughter and the HS drop out BF making it even a few years into marriage.

I honestly cannot coherently explain how much this terrifies me. Seriously, gut wrenching terror.

Dear Mrs. Palin,

I have been reading that you are in favor of amending the United States Constitution to forbid marriage between two people of the same sex. Before we start the process of amending our constitution, something by the way that has only been done 27 times in the 232 year history of our great nation, I have a few questions about this "marriage" thing for you.

You see, even though I have been in a committed relationship for the past 16 years, I myself have never had the opportunity to experience this marriage thing. So I am curious.

It still is one man, one woman, till death do us part right?

The saying "first comes love, second comes marriage, then comes the couple with the baby carriage" is that just a ryme, or is that the way it's supposed to be?

How do you explain the 50% divorce rate in our country?

Can you please then explain some of our "conservative" leaders, who themselves have married multiple times........

Was Jane Wyman just a screen test for Ronnie before he met Nancy?

If I do get a divorce, should I serve my partner the paperwork when he is in the hospital, like Mr. Gingrich did?

If I choose to remain single, can I still get married three times like Mr. Limbaugh has?

If my partner is in a serious accident, and I meet a new partner who is prettier, younger, and who has a lot of cash, can I ask for a divorce from my first partner like Mr. McCain did?

And if I decide to have children, should I wait until the child has been in the womb for two months to get married like you may have? Or should I just postpone the wedding till after a big election like your daughter will.

I'm just curious, because as I have stated before, this marriage stuff is all new to me.

Thank you for your time!

Orlando Mike.....

Sorry, but this whole "sanctity of marriage" thing gets me a little worked up! pirate:

Perfect Mike!!!

But don't you know that marriage should be reserved for two teenagers (one being a high school dropout) with baby on the way? And I'm sure their marriage will be long and successful. :rotfl:

Oh my... Mike, you are a genius!!! This is absolutely fantastic!! :worship:

:hippie:

Can you tell I spent all day in an empty house doing chores with only an AM radio! That letter has been playing in my head all day! ;)

Great letter.

If they really want to protect the "sanctity of traditional marriages" why don't we force them all to go back to their first wives/husbands. THAT would have them all singing a new tune pretty durned quick!

Okay, I'm a total lurker and none of you know me- sorry if this is weird.
OrlandoMike, that was great! Can I have your permission to print that out read it to my GSA (crediting you, of course)? I've always wondered about how people with such murky histories can run on "family values" platforms.

rpmdfw: that would be hilarious!

Didn't this forum have Glass House Awards a while ago? I think we need to bring those back.

A word of caution on the McCain divorce. He and wife number one are still great friends and it wasn't a messy divorce. I don't know the details of how he met floozy, er Cindy, but I do not believe she was the catalyst for his divorce.

However, the rest of the letter, great. She and her family, great role models for the youth of America.

In April 1979, McCain met Cindy Lou Hensley, a teacher from Phoenix, Arizona, whose father had founded a large beer distributorship. They began dating, and he urged his wife Carol to grant him a divorce, which she did in February 1980, with the uncontested divorce taking effect in April 1980.The settlement included two houses, and financial support for her ongoing medical treatments due to her 1969 car accident; they would remain on good terms.

For two houses and some financial support, I could remain on "good terms" with just about anybody! :rotfl2:

I think that Johnboy and wifey 1 were on the skids already, before the blonde bimbo showed up. Can you tell I think Cindy McCain is as fake as they come?

There are 2 things that will keep me from voting for ANY candidate, thier stand on abortion and their stand on equal rights, especially as those right pertain to non heterosexuals.

My BP is rising, I need to behave.

But before I go, I do want to say that I may not know any of you personally, but the emotions I feel for you are genuine and I will never give up my part in this fight.

I need to not read these..

It is hard to want to do the right thing and vote with your conscience and yet know that you do not agree with all the policies of either candidate.. I live with Mr Conservative and God knows we have gone to the polls and cancelled each other out many times...thinking Clinton here.

However, I have to say it bothers me when we call wives "floozy" or blond bimbo, it bothers me. I think families should be off limits, to me it seems like other than Michelle Obama saying this is the one time she has been proud of her country, I have not seen anything else.. Maybe she has not said anything else, but for some reason, I think she is being given a pass. I have no idea how old any of you are, but I am probably older and this campaign has just about done it for me. Sorry.....both sides are guilty of slander, smear and downright nastiness....

I may write my husband's name in when I vote....neither candidate has shown me that they deserve to lead this country. We use the term heartbeat away from the Presidency, both VP candidates scare the life out of me..one inexperienced and one who needs to learn how to spell before he makes speeches....never mind he runs off and never stops talking about what? He makes me crazy and I have no clue who she is and what she stands for other than you betcha and wink wink.

But....and here is the but.. I am pro-choice, I am for gay marriage, it horrifies me that I got an email this morning from a friend telling me what the catholic church thinks I should do when I go into vote. Sorry, no, I did not read it but knew what it said. I will take this to the last day.....I will wait until I go into that voting booth, I will make a decision based on how I think weighing both sides....This is a frightening time for America.

I am a great fan of this site, I do not go to the CB unless dragged there for my duties because of the nastiness on both sides.. I am hoping that we can agree to get through this election and let the country speak. Name calling just really bothers me and so I stood up this morning..

I am still the same person, I want my Mike to be able to marry if he wants.. I live in MA where we allow that and thank God that I do live there. And one more thought, do not talk to me about taxes.....I have been paying my fair share for years....I live in Taxachusetts. I just would like to see everyone pay THEIR FAIR SHARE. With that, I am heading to the gym where I can work out my frustrations in spin class.

Aw Marshia, love ya mean it!

You go ahead and vote for whoever you want! We know that your state is about as blue as they come anyway! :lmao: Funny thing is, I have a good friend who lives in Mass who is actually one of those Log Cabin people!

My Uncle's partner is a republican, too! :confused3 Uncle Kevin likes to say that being a Gay Republican is like being a Jewish Nazi. :rotfl2:

Marsha, we will agree to disagree on the floozy. I am a lot more familiar with Ms. McCain than with Ms Obama. I base my opinion on that. And while family could be off limits, when the wives and husbands put themselves out on the campaign trail, making speeches, they are no longer off limits. Regardless who wins, the spouse will also be in the White House and will play a role in the Government. Social role or political role, but they will be there.

I am not from the US, but by beliefs on this whole equality issue are that life is short with no guarantees and you only travel this way once, you may as well be happy, with the same sex or opposite, I don't feel anyone should be judged by who they love. I think Senator Palin should step back and take a good look at her family, friends and constituents; I am sure she would find some surprises that she may find offensive. Maybe she should step out of her "ideal" world and join the rest of us in the real world.

Log cabin people?? does that = republican?
yep we have some of those here in MA.........LOL
in my neighborhood there are both McCain and Obama signs in front yards,
I was in Vermont the other day, I don't live far from the border, and I didn't see one mccain sign at all.

Log Cabin Republican = gay Republican.

The whole mess is just so sad. We are all just people after all and we'd do SO much better if we focused on how we're the same and not spend so much time fussing at each other because of our differences.
