I have a little girl named Layla in my class. She is so sweet and is in kindergarten. She is always excited when she comes to my class in the computer lab and loves to show me what she has done. She has even been my student of the day twice in the first month and I only see her class twice a week. I found out that her mom passed away less than 2 months ago. I am so sad for her

That is so sad. All you can do is be there for her and show her as much support as you can. Take care!

My son (7 1/2) has a new bestfriend, Mary. She reminds me of Peppermint Patty, because she's a tomboy and has a deep voice. LOL. Anyway, they just started playing together a couple of months ago. I was getting frustrated because Mary called so frequently and Hunter wanted me to drive him over there all the time. But then a few weeks ago I found out that Mary's dad died in March. :( Her mom tells me that when Hunter comes over, Mary laughs. Something, she says, Mary hadn't been do a lot of.

My point is that I'm happy that they found each other and that we can be in Mary's life and do something positive.

You are doing something positive for Layla by caring and being her teacher. :)

That is so sad. Please give her a big hug from me the next time you see her. Bichon that is great that your son has been able to bring such joy into the life of a sad little girl.

She is lucky to have such a compassionate teacher.

I couldn't agree more with KathyFP!

My 4 dd's lost their daddy this past July. I have been sitting here thinking...what can I suggest you do or say to Layla. But, sadly, I can't think of a thing. Every child reacts differently (as I've seen first hand). Please be patient with her. Talk with her. Expect anything and know it's not personal. She's tired, emotionally drained. Probably curious, yet doesn't really want to know.

I'll pray for peace and eventual understanding for Layla.

Thanks for caring about her.

You sound like a kind teacher. I bet your friendship means a lot to this little girl.

That is so sad, it's rough losing a parent when you are so young. I was just 6 when my Mom passed away. I can tell you from personal experience that my first grade teacher was my favorite of all time because she took that little extra time with me when I came back to school after the funeral.
Keep up the good work with her, she needs to find things to make her happy! But, also keep an eye on her 'cause she will have rough times too, just be there for support.

Thanks for being such a good teacher.
God bless little Layla.

Losing my Mom was one of the toughest I have ever faced in my life and I was an adult.. something very hard to move on from... but for a child I can only imagine...I wonder if you wrote her a note or something just qualifying that you knew and understood.. I know it is so hard for teachers now as they have to be so careful not to be misunderstood.. Hugs to you and prayers for that Layla.

Thanks for the advice. Although I was upset when I found out I later talked to the IA again and she said she told me out of fear that I might tell her to take something home and show her mommy. Truthfully each and every kid in my kindergarten class are so sweet. they run up and hug me in the hallways. ( I know it might be inappropriate but how do I tell a 5 year old that?)I am always so happy when I have her in my class as well as a few others. My gf was right she told me when I took this job teaching K-8 that I would love it and I am starting to have a personal favorite in each class.

Thanks Chrissy

You've got a big heart, Antnee. That poor little girl.:(

My kids go up to their current and past teachers and hug them all the time. My ds really loves to hug his 1st grade teacher (he had a HUGE crush on her last year;)).
