I am more disturbed

I believe that what goes on between two consenting adults is their business. But when they bring that business out to the world and expect the rest of the world to condone it and act like nothing is wrong with it , that's where I disagree.

And apparently so do a majority of Americans.

RM,
The evangelical, religious right has taken over. We'll be in burkas in no time at all.

I have very little doubt that the admentment in GA will be thrown out. On the ballot they did not include the entire admendment, thus leaving out that they wouldn't honor marriages or domestic partnerships from other states. It really shocks me that such a high % voted yes on it.
:cheer2:

That's what I was going to say...in the polls when they asked people questions involving the full amendment the results flipped the other way. The summary on the ballot didn't reflect what the actual proposed law would be.

Gary Adams...when you call people "libs" you are calling them a name. Some of them will be proud to be called "lib" and some of them may not have liberal views at all. The same is true when people slop the label repubs, rightys or bushies on people expressing opposing views. One should consider the possibility that this is just one issue that a person disagrees on...stem cell research is another example.

The sad thing is that your post made a good point about people voting how they feel and how the posters should respect that then you had to go and stoop to plastering people with a label to make yourself feel that touch of superiority.

I'm embarassed this morning to be from one of the states that passed this. I voted against it as did the vast majority of my friends and relatives. :( I personally feel that gays should have the right to marry. However, no matter how you feel about it, I just can't see that it has any place at all in the constitution.

In my opinion saying a gay couple can't marry is no different than saying a black person can't marry a white person.

I definitely don’t feel good today, ripleysmom. I feel hated, looked down, discriminated, helpless and sad. But I guess it’s something I’m going to have to get used to. Thank goodness my love does not need a legal document to survive.

The problem is, states learned from the MA case that unless they want to risk state gay marriage bans being overturned by state courts, it has to be in the state constitution.

I don't think a person should be able to marry their car/horse/dog either

I want to give you the benefit of the doubt here....surely you are not equating a gay/lesbian person to a car, or dog, or horse...are you???

One of the greatest fears of some people I know is that their children will be gay. They don't want the issue of homosexuality out of the closet (and legally sanctioned), because their kids might see it.

Once, not long ago, african americans were also viewed as "property" or less worthy humans. It was wrong then, it is wrong now.

Yeah, I'm not thrilled about Ohio passing their admendment. It bans civil unions of any kind and denies benefits to their significant others. With that being said, I don't think the passage is due to the religious right. It has always gotten broad based support. A lot of Republican politicians were against this issue, but it still passed by a large margin.

I see this as legislation of hate and intolerance. I'm ashamed to be an American today.

I'll be honest. This is one issue I struggle with. I think marriage between gay partners is wrong, but I also have a hard time saying you can't get married. I do think a civil union would be okay, but to me marriage is more than that. I don't know.

But I am not going to think that the people who voted for a state constitutional amendment are hateful people, just as I won't think those that voted against it are bad people.

Just for the record, I (a lib but perhaps more libertarian than liberal!) oppose gay marriage. Marriage has been presumed to be between a man and a woman too long to make such a radical shift in the interpretation of laws that have been on the books umpty ump years. We are still working out the shift away from women being the lesser party and/or the presumed care giver in a marriage as an issue in a divorce. I don't think throwing gay marriage into the mix makes sense.

HOWEVER I support civil unions. Right now if I have a close male friend who benefit from marriage I can choose to help him out by marrying him. An easy example might be he has an illness and needs help with a voice in his medical care or insurance... I would be unable to offer that same help to a female friend. Or maybe there is an issue with children that person has...maybe they trust you, a close friend, with their children more than they trust their blood relatives. Again I could help out a guy by marrying him but it would be much harder to help out a female friend. Yes there are legal contortions to get there but perhaps its time to use a sword on the gordian knot of some of the basic quality of life issues.

You're ashamed to be an American ????

I do not agree with the idea of the homosexual lifestyle, but I sure don't "hate" any of them.

The far right is no better than the far left.

They are both intolerant and hateful in their own ways and this country needs to realize this.

The far right thinks they're right and everyone else is wrong.

The far left thinks the exact same thing.

We should be proud to be Americans and have the freedom to vote to whichever side we wish.

And that doesn't make ANY OF US WRONG.

I too was saddened and discouraged by this. As Gary Adams said, the people have spoken and we now have no choice but to follow the law until we can change it.

It is interesting to me, however, that as much as the supporters are touting "the people spoke, quit whining", not one of them, with the exception of Tony, actually said why they support such a ban. Are they afraid to just come out and say "A couple consisting of two gay men is evil and doesn't deserve the same priviledges (note I do not use the word rights) as a hetro couple"?

And really, Tony, if I want to marry my car, what's it to you? There are dozens, hundreds even, of hetro couples out there today whom I look at and say "What were they thinking???" But it's none of my business, and neither does it affect me. So I move on down the road.

edited for abysmal grammar...

At the risk of sounding like former President Carter discussing issues with Amy ;), I asked the kids last night if they thought marriage should only be between a man and a woman, and they all (16, 14 and 11) said "no". At least I know I did something right in raising them.

Let's hope that the younger generation will be more accepting of people and a future vote will be in favor of same sex marriages.
