we are going to captiva after our trip to disney (we went after our honeymoon, now we want to take the kids) but the hotels are so darn expensive there, anyone know any tricks or discounts?? i'd like to pay less than 150.00-200.00 a nite but it seems impossible

May I suggest usahotelguide.com I got two great quotes from this website. once you get there clic related for other sites on sanibel. Independent realtors on Sanibel Island may get you a condo near by. i think there is a management company buying up all the little guys on Sanibela and Captiva because I was interested in South Seas Plantation and kept getting a realtor?

I live pretty close to Captive/Sanibel. I got a room for a friend of mine through Expedia at South Seas last month for about $200.00 a night. Personally I don't think it's worth it, there are so many other nicer beaches in FL for a lot less money. But I know many people love it there.
I also saw the Holiday Inn on Sanible listed with some more reasonable rates, it's pretty nice, right on the beach.

We have vacationed in Sanibel 6 times in the past six years. We LOVE this area. It is wonderful for kids. We have always rented directly from owners. Our favorite is the Sundial Resort. Of course, it's on Sanibel not Captiva - but it's a short car ride away from Capitiva. We love to visit Capitiva (great restaurants and beaches) - but prefer Sanibel for it's wonderful bike paths. The Sundial Resort has a great kids program. You can decide to do a short craft program - or an evening program. And they have a cute ecocenter.
