I am boycotting the Blue Ray, whatever it is.

I'm just against Sony trying to create a propitary format in which they control the price and licensing. Sony has been trying for years to monopolize something. Betamax, their stupid memory sticks, silly mp3 formats for music... Arrrgh. I'm all for better quality content, but keep it open enough that we aren't going to have to spend a premium to buy the content and the hardware.

I really can't buy that argument...this time.

Sony learned their lesson and worked with others to create the Blu-ray standard. They initially worked with Pioneer to create DVR Blue, which eventually became Blu-ray, after the creation of a consortium of 9 companies, which also grew afterwards to over 20. Sony does not "own" Blu-ray. Ironically, part of the reason there was a format war at all between Blu-ray and HD-DVD was because of Toshiba and Microsoft insisting they use a proprietary Microsoft interactivity layer, instead of the more open Java.

By the way, part of the DVD specification was created by Sony as well...

Yes, Sony didn't play well with others in the past. But that really isn't true any more.

Blu-ray is a tough sell for a lot of people.

Generally speaking, DVD's look and sound great, so why in the world would I want to upgrade my player yet again ?

The answer is, "Because the quality of both the picture and sound on Blu-ray discs, when shown on a large hi def screen and with the audio sent through a decent sound system is absolutely nothing short of jaw-dropping." It quite literally defies description. It is often *better* than what you would see in a movie theater. The picture is so clear, so dimensional, it's as if you can reach right into the screen.

Still, there will be a lot of people that just won't care. Money is tight. I like my TV the way it is...

Fair enough. I imagine there were lots of folks in the late 60's that saw no reason to give up their black and white TV's for color sets.

After all, something better is always coming along, right ?

Try watching someting like Cars or Sleeping Beauty on a blu ray system with a high def TV. Sure DVD isn't bad and is pretty good, but the step up in detail is amazing with blu ray. You can keep your old DVD stuff and most blu ray players will actually upscale your dvd movies to better quality than they were before....pending you have the high def tv to go with it. We are fairly early adopters for these kinds of things and once blu ray was pretty much gonna win against HD, then we jumped in. Also, adding Netflix with blu ray is also a good way to save money and watch lots of blu ray. :thumbsup2

For the record,

I am boycotting the "microwave," whatever that is...

Rrrr. I am anti-blu ray. But I am anti Sony in general. I'm all for HD content and I can see the difference in a 720/1080p image as opposed to 480i. But I'm a visual person and look at high-res images all day long.

Seriously, $25-30 for the average disc? Forget that.

I'm all for digital formats so I can store stuff on a hard drive and access it all, anytime, anyplace.

Down with Sony!!!!

I have a Sony mp3 player - the 1st 20GB one - and the software is awful, I can't download mp3's onto it without converting them (like I can't get a Podcast on there to access through the menu) and now Sonic Stage doesn't even let me put new CD's onto it to be able to load them on my mp3 player

Or like my Dad who saw no reason to get a colour TV well into the 80's :lmao: we only got a VCR in the early 90's :scared1:

Sonic Stage is the worst piece of %$#@ that I've ever used, and now never use. I'll never buy a Sony MP3 player again.

Cars is a GREAT example.

Look at McQueen's finish. Did you know it was METALLIC red? Quite clear on Blu-ray.

:rotfl: I know someone who refused to have a microwave in her house. And she's in her mid-40's.

As far as Blu-Ray. I could care less. I think regular DVD's are just fine. DH on the other hand is a movie/tv buff and is really wanting a Blu Ray player.

Which means he'll want a new TV and that's just not gonna happen any time soon.

Hi

Couldn’t agree more with the OP.

I want to hear the scratches on my Paint It Black record. I want my vinyl copy of Stairway to Heaven to jump…continuously ( left out of sleeve in window on hot day).

I want my vcr to churn the tape just as Johnny says “No one puts Baby in the corn…..” screen rolls.

I want Mario and Sonic to move slowly across the screen left to right as I attempt to complete level one.

I want my not so mobile phone (cell phone to you guys) to weigh roughly the same as a small pig…..and I just want it to ring – not take photos, play tunes or connect me to the World Wide Web…whatever that is!

Bah, humbug!

Rich :)

PS...message will be sent whan my Dial Up allows.

Blue Ray?

And is he any relation to Laura Keets? :surfweb:
