I-4 still Closed

The interstate(I-4) leading from Tampa to Orlando is closed until Monday, February 26 (at the earliest) due to a wild fire. Smoke is limiting visabilty to three feet or less and the real danger is of falling burnt trees onto the interstate. The Forestry Dept. is busily removing the dangerous timbers but it is a lengthy process and I-4 will remain closed until they have completed the work. There is a detour that leads motorists from I-4 to a east-west state road (92) and the detour is causing a 3 hour delay. The normal trek from Tampa to Orlando is only One Hour and this delay is effecting both directions. Any Motorist planning a east-west or west-east trip through Central Florida should consider using State Road 60 (east-west) which although much further south of I-4, travel is unrestricted and the overall travel time would be much less than the I-4 with detour. To get north-south use U.S.27 or the Florida Turnpike to/from State Road 60. Out of town guest unfamiliar with this route should contact the local AAA Auto Club.

These fires have been terrible and we're really in need of some rain to help put them out. Depending on wind direction we have smoke smell all the way in Clearwater / Tampa area! I was planning to ride over to the parks this Sunday, but I may need to postpone until next Sunday. I have heard on the news of the 3 hour delay to get around the closed section, however I've talked to friends who said the detour added no more than a half hour to their trip (on a weekend, so no business commuters).

My father tried to visit us at the Portofino while we were there. He was coming from St. Petersburg area and ended up turning around. He spent 3 hrs. trying to get here. We never got to see him because the highway never opened. I think it didn't help that he tried to come on a Sunday when the Daytona 500 was happening too. By the way they have a little memorial (candles, floweres etc) at Nascar Cafe for Dale Ebenhart(sp) they also have their flags half staff. I am not a racing fan but it was very sad.
