My boss’ boss called me into her office today to tell me that my position is being eliminated! (My boss is out on disability.) I’ve been laid off, effective immediately. I’m still in shock, I think. I’ve never been laid off before, but I guess I thought I’d have more notice. I haven’t even talked with the personnel department yet. It took me several hours to pack all my stuff up. It’s amazing how much accumulated over the past 4 years. Of course, co-workers kept coming by to say ‘good-bye’ to me; everyone else was shocked, too. I really loved my job; and I’m going to miss the people I worked with – they were like family to me. It would be an understatement to say that I’ve shed a few tears today. I don’t know what I’m going to do now; I haven’t thought that far ahead.

Sorry for rambling, but I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me. I could sure use a little pixie dust. I feel so alone right now.

Pixie Dust is on the way, Diane! What kind of work did you do? So sorry you were laid off.

I'm so sorry! That's such a horrible feeling, I'm sure. The fear has been in my mind for a couple of years now. We will be laying off a couple of people in the very near future due to a large account that we just lost. The profits just aren't there with many companies these days. Not that that makes it any easier. :( I will keep you in my thoughts! Please keep us posted.

It happend to me about 13 years ago...it feels awful...I wish you the best....things will look up...and hopefully it will be sooner rather then later...

Diane, I've been there. I know exactly what you are feeling. I'm sorry to hear this did happen to you. {{{HUGS}}} to you that you find something quick.

Diane, neighbor, I'm so sorry! It's such a tough economy, and it seems that loyalty to employees has gone down the tube. This while so many CEO's are taking millions in bonuses.

I'm so sorry! It happened to me a few yrs back... I had no idea either, they just came through and cut 2 people from the department! I was about 6 months pregnant at the time and the stupid "upper management person" kept asking my boss why I seemed so emotional about the lay off!

I really am sorry and I hope things work out quickly for you.

Thanks, everyone! Your kind words really mean a lot to me.

Pin Wizard - I was a receptionist/secretary at a college. I supported a dozen or so adjunct faculty.

I am so sorry to hear this..what a heartless way to do it, just tell you that you are laid off and to clear out your stuff...:(

My company has had temp layoffs so far and we expect to let some of our part time staff go..No full time postiions endangered so far, but part time staff does a lot of our work.

Sounds like a fun job! I'm in college now and would love to work a job like that. ;) Quite a few years ago I was a secretary for the Marketing dept. of a real estate developer. I had gone to the job through a temp agency, they hired me, and then laid me off 9 months later. I LOVED that job! It was a blast! Seems the fun jobs are the first to get cut. :(

So sorry, Diane. I've been there, too, about 7 years ago. I am very glad it happened, I would never had met shep. :teeth:

I'm so sorry. I'm sure you do feel like a rug has been pulled out from under you. Best of luck finding the new job that is right for you.

My husband is losing his job soon, as well. We are still waiting to hear when his last day will be. He's hoping to stay until the plant closes and get the bonus for sticking it out, but they just keep stringing us along. We keep hearing that we'll soon know what our final day is, but then they don't come through. I guess I'm saying that waiting is stressful too. Sometimes I wish they would just tell him today is his last day so we could get on with our lives.

GREAT BIG {{{HUG}}} I was told inm December hat they were not retaining me. I just filed for unemployment yesterday,

I sure hope that you are able to take a little time for yourself and find something that will you will enjoy even more. Cry..it does seem to help for a little bit.

So sorry this happened to you :( They could have at least given you some warning.

I'm so sorry that this has happened to you. I was once laid off but I at least had a lot of warning. Hang in there!

Diane: Hang In there !!
I was laid off by telephone call on 12/3/2002 after 23 years of continuous employment. Right off the bat, I considered it a "gift" to be with my family full time and away from the company, which was in a crisis mode anyway. I worked on a resume and cover letter; talked to people I knew EVERYWHERE, and then talked with more people !! As of 4/21 I am starting a new job in a new field and couldn't be happier.
Allow yourself to go through the grieving process. It will be so much healthier for you than being in denial. Someone once told me that the richest opportunities come out of the lowest lows--and I would have to agree.
So your company doesn't want you--so they're stupid !! You have a great opportunity to get out there and do something you WANT to do rather than HAVE to do. The event of being laid off has no emotion--it's just an event. Don't give it negative emotion, give it position energy. That energy will show through to prospective employers and they'll be impressed with how you are dealing with change in such a positive way.
Big Hug--things will work out. Remember what good things you do have in your life!!

Sorry!

I don't think I noticed anyone else mentioning it so I will since it is what I do for a living. Make sure you file for unemployment benefits right away. In most cases benefits start the date you file, not when you were laid off.

Take care.

Oh Diane, I am so sorry about your job. I sure wish they could have found a way to give you more advance notice. I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but something even better will come along. It took me quite a while after I graduated from college to find a decent job, but I did get one that I really like. {{{HUGS}}}

Diane, really sorry to hear about this event. The same thing happened to me (an entire department) three years ago, also with no warning.

Know the shock hasn't worn off yet, but you WILL get through it. Take your time and find something that is right for you. You're a member of this community, so we know you are terrific at what you do and a wonderful person to be around. Some enterprise is going to see this in you, along with your experience, and welcome you with open arms. Good Luck!

HUGS and XXXXXX.
