Hey fellow WISHers. I've been trying for months and months to lose baby weight (pregnancy #2) and have come to the conclusion that I might have a hypothyroid due to a recent pregnancy. i need your guidance/assistance. Let me give a brief background:

I'm 31, was heavy (1 and 2x) in my early 20's for a few years, lost a lot of the weight (down to an 8/10) a few years later through Weight Watchers and lots of exercise. When I was 27 I became pregnant w/ kiddo #1 and gained a bunch of weight (ended up mentally losing it knowing i was going to be "fat" again and put on 75lbs ). After having #1 I struggled and struggled to lose the baby weight. I found that nursing did not help at all but instead seemed to make me retain the weight. When i stopped nursing my body let go of about 15 lbs and then refused to lose any more. I stayed the same weight for a long time but then managed to drop another 25 when DS was about 20 months old. Of course a few months after losing this weight (and still dropping) I get pregnant w/ #2.

Now here I am w/ a 9 month old, not nursing, and at a complete stand still (size 16/18) and completely frustrated. I have been working my tail off to lose the weight (WW, medically supervised weight loss, tons of exercise, counting calories..........you name it) and nothing budges.

I'm not asking for guidance in nutrition or exercise (I know this stuff more than others because I'm in the Fitness Industry) but instead I need the postpartum mommy/hypothyroid veterans guide. I plan on calling the doctor this week for a thyroid test (I've looked it up on line and have most of the symptoms so i'm guessing this is what i have) but i'm rather anti medication and would rather not have to put chemicals in my body. Of course I'm willing to do this for weight loss (you gals know what I mean ) but am hoping for some suggestions that can help me over come this w/out having to resort to meds.

thanks..........oh, and GO BLUE TEAM!!!! :woohoo:

On a side note, I have a wonderful DH who is so supportive and always tells me "i love you no matter your size"

Hi! I was recently diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. You are doing the right thing...go to the doctor and have blood drawn. If you do wind up with a thyroid problem, you will then need to find an Endocrinologist.

I know I am probably no help but wanted to wish you well.

You will be put on SYnthroid and will have to take it everday. I was diagnosed shortly after I had my first child, I was horrible with medicine and didn't take care of it at all. For some reason between 2004 and 2005 it evened itself out and I actually lost 35lbs. Then it get messed up again and I put back 20 of thouse pounds.

Recently I went and had blood work done and big surprise my thyroid is messed up. I have been on 50 mg of synthroid and already feeling better (Started the meds in July) I've actually lost I think about 10lbs. Wasn't tracking so I don't know for sure.

My cholesterol was also bad so I have to lose weight or they will put me on meds for that. Have to get that rechecked at the end of October.

Take the medicine it really will help not only with the weight problems but with all those other symptoms you're experiencing.

I don't know of any "natural" way to help your thyroid. Synthroid is at least a med that has been around for a long time and is really safe, so if your thyroid is the problem, the med will help.

I hate to admit that I secretly hope for a thyroid problem so I could take a med that would make it easier to lose weight and give me more energy. I know the med is only one piece and you still need to exercise and eat right, but getting a little extra boost would be nice.

I am also hypothyroid, been that way for about 6 years. I still struggle with my weight even while taking medicine. I know others have had different experiences but I have had 2 doctors tell me that going on the meds will only be good for about 10 pounds, the rest is up to me.

However, it does help to some extent and it has taken away the sluggish feeling that I have always had (and didn't know why). Best advice is to get the thyroid checked and get on meds if need be. Good luck.

I have been hypothyroid since the age of 13 and am 49 yrs. old now. Have always been regulated by meds.......but still have a very hard time losing weight and have really crappy metabolism. It will help with sluggishness, but I agree with the OP....my Dr, has always said my thyroid medicine will only bring my body inline....not work as a diet aide.

1. Go to the doctor and get tested..even if it's okay you will feel better about it knowing one way or the other.

2. Are you getting enough rest? You have two small children and as a mother (as many of you are) we don't get enough rest.

3. Write down everything you eat ( I mean everything, even if it was just one peanut). It helped me. There was always some extras I would forget I had eaten.

4. Relax and take a deep breath. One day at a time-I only have half a thyroid, but don't take meds and I won't as long as I can maintain my weight with exercise, watching what I eat, and getting plenty of rest.

5. I also write down my weight on Mondays and Fridays...I have a small note book that goes back several years. It has three columns...one with the date, one labeled goal weight (hardly ever reach it, but hey its something to strive for) and last column is actual weight. I only make goals for about one month out so that I can adjust for missed goals. The BIG goal is just to keep it going down no matter how little. It can take me a month to lose ONE pound, but I know I have lost because I have written it down.

6. One thing I don't do it deny myself all the "good" stuff. For me that would be ice cream, chocolate, maybe cookies. Denying only makes me want it more and then BOOM, I've eaten a container of ice cream or bag of chips. I allow myself dessert after dinner just not all the dessert in the house. ( I know some will disagree with this and that's fine. It works for me.)

7. Know you CAN do it; it may take some time. Hope this helps.:goodvibes

Very informative thread. I too believe im hypothroid. I was told last time I was tested it was just a matter of time. I get tested once a year since thyroid problems and cancer of the thyroid runs in our family.
