Hypothetical- What would you do if...

Which most accurately describes what you would do?

  • I bought a Disney timeshare because I did not want anything else. I would sell immediately.

  • I would give it some time and see how things panned out, possibly stay a visit or two, then make a d

  • Who cares who owns or runs it? I'm keeping it.

What would you do if Disney sold the DVC resorts to another hotel company, such as Marriott, or Hilton?

I am just asking this hypothetical question because of the questions raised in this thread.

I would probably (not definitely) start selling immediately, as the main reason I bought DVC was because it is Disney.

I agree that I would not have bought into DVC if it were owned and operated by another management group. Part of what we bought into was the trust that Disney would do things in a certain manner.

Having said that, I'd probably keep going until I saw some actual deterioration of quality of accommodations or an unjustified increase in dues. On the other hand, if the employees looked and acted the same, and the amenities were kept up, and everything else appeared to be the same...then I'd probably stick with it.

I put "other, please specify" because the answer is two pronged for me. If someone like Marriott bought DVC, I would probably be pretty confident that they won't run it into the ground... in fact, I think that DVC DOES have a little room for improvement based on some of the issues brought up on this board (not huge, but I do think there are too many housekeeping issues). I wouldn't sell my timeshare JUST because another company is operating it. To me, the "Disney" part of it won't be taken away as long as they don't pick up BWV and move it elsewhere or close down the parks, and as long as the quality remains high.

I couldn't bring myself to say "I don't care who owns it" because I do. I'd be pretty disappointed if a less reputable company bought it and I'd have to wait and see in that case, but if someone like Marriott bought it, I think I would really enjoy being part of the marriott system.

Just giving this thread the 'ole heave-ho because the votes are coming in, but the respones are not...

PS- I am surprised at the numbers so far. I thought forsure many here would not want it, if it wasn't Disney.

Since they can't move the resorts themselves I would give a try and hope that everything would stay the same or better. If not then would have to consider if continuing to own is a plus in my life or not. Have heard several comments that DVC is one of the only areas that is consistently "making money" for Disney so can't see them selling it off in the near future.

I couldn't vote because I just really don't know. I woudl be pretty upset that si for sure. I think I'd probably sell, unless the prices went down to nothing. The sale of DVC.... If that were to happen I wonder how it woudl be run? Could things change completely such as the policies regarding booking, etc.? would we still be able to stay at non home DVC resorts? All thsi would be a deciding factor in selling. Course, if WDw is broken up and sold I'm sure that resort destination feel woudl be lost. Also, DVc might not be as good a deal since many of the resorts might start competing with each other, thus great room rates. Interesting thread...

Shan, for me your above statement goes to the heart of it all. I would be heartbroken to see the company, and DVC broken up. I just don't think I could have the same vacation experience as I do now... no matter how well the 'new DVC owners' ran DVC. :( :( :(

I'm with the "wait and see" crowd for a couple of reasons:

1. I very seriously doubt that Disney would sell these properties that are attached to their hotels (some of them) and located squarely on Disney property without some pretty solid assurances that the resorts would be kept up. Does anybody honestly think Disney would risk harm to their theme park business by allowing resorts in walking proximity to be run into the ground, especially if they are attached to Disney hotels?

2. It's possible that being included in a program like Marriot could be beneficial to owners. It may even be better than the trade-out options that Disney now offers. So, I guess there's a chance that this could be an improvement in some ways. I would imagine that Marriott properties that would be on Disney property (like BCV, where I own) would be extremely valuable inside the Marriott system when making trades. It would automatically make me an owner of one of the best properties (value-wise) that Marriott has to offer, and I would have some serious flexibility when I would choose to go somewhere other than Disney.

cheap extra points becoming available.
Seriously I believe that dvc is envied and anybody taking it over would be only to glad to benefit from the system used

S&D are not owned by Disney. They do not offer ALL the Disney perks like key to the world charging, and pkg delivery but do those look run down? No. I think the only way DVC will be sold is if all of Disney is sold. But at the price it would have to be someone BIG and with lots of money. And they certainly will be in it to lure guests and increase profit not run it into the ground. Disney just lost Roy, this in my mind signals the last of the personalization of Disney from Walt's eyes.:( :( :( Only time will tell. I guess I would be of the wait and see attitude.

Please excuse my ignorance because although I dearly love WDW I do not really keep up with their board members, family members involved in the business etc. But I do have one question: where is the rest of the Disney family? I know Walt had 2 daughters and several grandchildren when he died and Roy also had children, grandkids etc. When Walt was alive his sons in law were involved in the business as were Roy's kids, in laws etc. What happened?? Did none of the Disney family choose to remain in the family business???

One of Walt's daughters passed away very young. The second one, Diane Disney Miller isn't in good health (I believe). Her husband was involved with the company before Eisner came in and I don't think he did a great job. I don't know much about Roy's kids.

I have been looking and planning to buy into DVC, WDW being my absolute favorite place on earth. However, I would never be interested in another timeshare, I only want DVC because I trust in the quality and untill some recent threads, the enduring nature of Disney. I am going to put of my decision to buy off for a while, watch what happens, and hope Disney doesn't sell, rent, or handover mgmt.

Several people have mentioned Marriot, do their resell timeshare do better in the resale market then other timeshares? I was under the impression all timeshares other than DVC lost considerable resell value once purchased.

If you're referring to the Roy Disney situation, it's impact on DVC should be nonexistent. Disney's ouster was a veiled show of support for Eisner, meaning that it will have little-to-no impact on the operations of the company. Eisner will continue to move forward in running the company as he has for the past 20 years.

(Fill in your own editorial comments here.)

In October Disney reassigned one of its long-time senior managers to head the DVC unit. I can't put my hands on the news story or I would have cited better details. But the gist of the move was that it reflected a GREATER interest on Disney's part in DVC and the timeshare industry.

Nobody knows what will happen in 10 or 20 or 50 years, but right now Disney is as interested in the DVC business unit as they have ever been. I think this thread has been a fun little speculative diversion, but I wouldn't let it discourage you from buying into DVC.

I'd have to fall into the "wait and see" category, but I wouldn't be immediately put-off if this were to happen. Sounds like it would give us access to a lot of other vacation alternatives we don't have now. And, with the solid reputations of the Dolphin and Swan, there's reason to think an outside management company may be able to retain a bit of the "magic."

But, in all honesty, it would take some major corporate shake-up for this to even be considered. Could anyone really imagine BCV and YC/BC being managed by different entities? Or VWL and WL? Or BWV and BWI?

If anything, I could see the theme park unit being spun-off from the Disney Corporation someday, but that would be likely to include all of the resorts, cruise line, DVC, etc.

If it were Marriott, I would definately keep it, they have some creative options in their time share program where you can turn your week into marriott points! As a platinum reward member that makes me happy!

I just had to get this in, can you say "CASH COW", because that is what the dvc business model is to Disney, the only question I have is will we ever see a $30+ stock price?????

It ain't looking so good!

I voted in the "wait and see" catagory too. I must say we have to be careful with threads like this though. It has the look of a rumor in the making!!!

I guess I would wait and see how things panned out, but my wife and I bought this timeshare because it was Disney. We visited two other timeshares (I won't mention which ones) and I was very upset at the handoff and pressure tactics that they use to try and get you to purchase. When we went for our presentation withh the DVC it was very laid back, no pressure and having the Disney name to back it up sold us. So, I would wait and see if the new owners continue in the Disney way, but if things began to change I would immediately sell.
